I installed a 1 ton 12000 apu mini split in my truck. It works beautifully and very comfortable in the cabin. I bought a mini split braket from amazon for about $60. I installed the inside unit on the back above top bunk. I was skeptical at first thinking I might need to install it in the front but the thing is so efficient it cools me into my blankets. My split cost me $500, another $500 for the generator and about $300 installed. I installed it no to save on fuel, even though I am saving a lot. I installed it to no idle my truck to extend it's life before an inframe is needed. I been having no breakdown at all for the past 8 months. I used to have breakdown just about every month when having my truck mostly on all the time. This is definitely a great and cheaper alternative that will not breakdown. Mini splits are made to last and apu are made to break down. My truck now only runs when is rolling no more idle for me.

I don't idle even without APU or mini split but I run in cooler areas. But we're installing a mini split now just in case and for better comfort. Good to know that the truck will last longer!

I used chassis grabbers to mount a custom box in the same location you did, I put a predator 3500 super quiet in the box with a radiator fan for a car to keep the generator cool. I installed a grommet in the back of the box and ran a cord through that and into the sleeper. I used a drain-less Hisense portable AC unit and used tie downs to mount it to the top bunk and it exhausts out the top window.

@@cwilliams6483 I wouldn’t remove the top bunk. Take the mattress off and use the top bunk plywood to screw some anchors into. That way you use ratchet straps to hold the ac UNIT on the top bunk and it sits next to the top bunk window so you can run the exhaust out that.

I put a Mini split on the back wall of the inside of a kenworth T660 with 86" studio and mounted the heat pump AC unit up above the rear of the cab outside. 2 years ago and it will freeze me out of cab still in 110° days. Just FYI don't run your "heat pump" outside unit in below freezing Temps, it will not run well covered in ice and snow and only keep up to about 30 degrees ambient. In the 20 below snow storms shut this unit down to save it for warm months. and I actually tarp mine cuz I love it soooo much for summer months. I put a separate heater unit in sleeper for arctic winter weather.

@@VicBeatz the studio sleeper is kind of a premium sleeper from what I've seen customizing other interiors. I usually reinforce the whole wall with light weight plywood, but actually depending on weather your run a wing or a topper u actually got a pretty good rail to mount on about 3/4 the way up the sleeper on 660 studio. Or close to it. I found I didn't prob need to reinforce the back wall, but if did because I basically gutted the sleeper and turned it into a 1 person "camper" totally functional shower and toilet, bigger bunk. The studio sleeper is only reason to own a 660! I'm big on custom sleepers. Most other sleepers I stip down I try to find or build in a support bean or at least reinforce the wall with plywood. But thr studio has a pretty strong back wall

Can last 11 hrs on about 2 gallons of fuel. They have Extended warranty plans where u can basically have lifetime warranty on the unit. And they have sales on it all the time, its currently 800 bucks, but u can catch it for 700 bucks or maybe cheaper

If I'm sitting anywhere for over 20hrs I get a room...probably idling about 300 gallons a year

I thought about this idling problem for a really long time and I think I’m going to mount a beefy 12v electric motor to the AC compressor and run it off the batteries while the truck is moving. Then have a small generator to charge the batteries when I’m parked. I haul a Reefer and always keep it on continuous run so for me I’ll just skip the noisy generator let it charge the truck batteries. When I’m sitting waiting for a load I can suffer in the heat for a few hours or just idle the truck. For heat in the winter they make a diesel parking heater for $100 that will warm up the sleeper really good.

I think that your heat pump unit that is outside the truck is too close form the cab there is not enuf air flow I know because on my house the installer had installed mine too close from the wall and there was not enuf air flow and in the winter months the unit would not defrost properly it might not be a issue for summer use but it might be more efficient.

I was wondering to install Fujitsu 9000 BTU split system to stay worm to -5F outside temperature winter time but I need to know your power consumption now summer time. Like how many watts is puling the AC compressor? I know this is inverter AC and the consumption is different but lets say for 90F outside temperature what is the average power consumption for day time run if you already tested? So I will know if I can run it on battery power for few hours some time or night time when the compressor is not working very hard. Thank you!

@RICHARD MAR You are wrong my friend. The LiPO4 batteries will not charge when get cold under 32F (0C) outside temperature you can easily damage them. Also you can't mix them with your Lead acid batteries because there is big voltage difference between Lead acid and LiPo4 like 1 Volt difference! That's why I got 400AH AGM batteries they are good in hot and very cold climates. Also you can discharge them to 25% with no problems. But since I mix them with the lead acid batteries for now I never let 50% discharging rate. Combining the AGM with my lead acid batteries now I got 800AH battery power. That's enough to supply my portable AC, laptop and refrigerator from 8 to 12 hours. For longer run I use my Honda generator. For me that's the perfect hybrid system :) Someday when the LiPO4 technology get better in cold climates I may buy such a batteries but not for now. Thanks!

OTRookie, how is the air conditioner doing? Can you provide an update now that it’s been a few months on the road? Have you had any problems with your refrigerant lines cracking due to the harmonics of the road? There was another KZreadr here that did the same thing but he used flexible lines all the way through. Have you had an opportunity to use it in 100+ degree weather? I’m thinking of installing a mini split myself, but I primarily run the south western states and have to deal with that 100+ degree weather during the summer and Is my main concern.

I destroyed 2 minisplit units. 1st unin broke off from the factory brackets on the 5th day of driving in Canada. From hanging in A/C lines while driving had damage to inside parts of the unit. Under warranty I got a new one. This time I used straps to secure my new unit. 2nd trip in 2 weeks to Alaska my unit was destroyed again. From vibration condenser had many cracks so now I'm going back to portable 14000btu house A/C. I have apu on my truck, but it's expensive to keep it in working condition plus cooling capacity is not the same as portable hous A/C even the cooling capacity is 20000btu but in real life not more then 8000btu. No more minisplits for me 😂

good healthy discussions on the real* concerns in trucking, and it usually surrounds $$money, most things cost...especially increased stress with the high unemployment an bankruptcy numbers. As it has been said, know your worth, know your local, and distant "lanes" of business; ie. what you and your truck can provide in service for others; when ; where. a know, chimpanzees only cost banannas, diapers, and attention; train one of those to drive the 2nd shift?? while your snoozing??😁🖐
