Driving mountains ⛰ is very technical, I would think is a most to train drivers on how to go about driving a mountain pass going up and down because you need to know both, I drive a 26' box truck OTR and I see this Semi guys almost running over people just because after they get up to speed they don't like to stop, what happened to this young boy is VERY unfortunate, but what happened to the family members that loss love ones in this accident have bad as well...

it takes 3×the braking force to stop a loaded truck at 65 as compared to 40 to 45 mph. those downhill limits are set with alot of thought and understanding of physics. watch that application gauge if its creeping up to 30 get off the road now. 35 is an all around safe speed, it may seem slow to others but it's your life and others that hang in the balance. driving since 1985 and the best advice I ever got was give 100%of your attention to driving the truck as most problems can be avoided if your on top of things.

That is a day that I will never be able to forget. That could’ve be avoided many different ways. But ultimately he was afraid that he was gonna die so he chose the way he did to end that story. Exactly. I'm new to driving (just got my CDL in Idaho) and I'm going to make sure I drive extra slow in a lower gear down hills. I don't care if I'm only going 10 mph down hill and it takes me 1 hour to drive 10 miles down the mountain. I'd rather put on my flashers and enjoy the much safer slow ride down. At the end of the day I'll be 1 hour late or lose 1 hour of pay (an extra $50), but everyone around me will be safe. Is it really worth making an extra $100 to go down hill at lightening speed to make better time? Not to me. If they want to fire me & would rather worship the value of the Almighty dollar while sacrificing everyones safety, I'll gladly toss them the keys & leave.

@@jsf8145 for a newbie, I wasn't gonna try to influence what you are being tought. I wasn't gonna say it but I hope you remember this someday. with less that 50 percent braking power (ie, only trailer brakes or less is working), you can come down ANY hill safely if it is on a highway and traffic isn't backed up and weather is good. Let the truck do the braking. At the top of the hill, Pop it into one or two gears lower than you climbed the hill with and leave it there untouched. Flip that engine brake if you have one. If you don't, just let the GOVERNOR do the work and brake intermittently. (Don't ride the brakes). Plug you ears and let that fat lady sing you to the bottom of the hill!

I've driven I-70 with an empty truck and trailer and it's challenging to go even normal speeds down steep grades. I was going about 45 and even with jakes it was tough to stay off the brakes, not over rev the engine, take curves the correct speed, and try not to impede traffic. At any given time one of those factors will take a backseat to the other factors and then the process starts over. I'm in the zone during that process - when my speed changes due to terrain or traffic or a curve I make a change. It's like a chess match. Gotta have skills and brains and also solid emotional skills to stay calm and in the moment. As far as punishment? The jury heard the facts and they are in the best position to judge him, not me.

There was one particular instance where I was pinned in between 2 jack-knifed trucks on I-80 through Nebraska. There was maybe 30 yards in between both trucks on both sides. It was in the middle of a freak blizzard. Nobody lost their lives. When I told my mother about the incident, she said that she was woken up at 3am (roughly 13 hours before it) and could not go back to sleep until she prayed for my safety. Moreover, *one of her friends* had the sudden inclination to pray for me MOMENTS before the incident happened!! Don't tell me prayer doesn't work! Good job Chyne.. all drivers should do pre and post inspections. But that’s not the only problem that causes accidents. The inspections is good mainly to avoid expensive breakdowns on the road and having someone stamp themselves on back of our trailers. There are other and most common causes of avoidable accidents is reckless driving.. people on phone, fatigue, inexperience drivers, a mind with problems, drivers on sort of drug etc. This driver on the video was reckless driving not because he didn’t do his pre.. this guy didn’t even touch his breaks(the pre was his excused on court).. having a few ramps to escaped he decided to roller coaster down the highway instead.. or not enough experience or just not a clean mind. Who knows. I tell people Let’s be complete drivers. And do all that is part of being a truck driver. Distraction goes as far as Some company not hiring drivers with child support because problems cause distraction on road. This gets really deep. Stay safe Chyne.. see ya on the road

I lived in Denver when I got my CDL 20+ years ago. That was part of our driving program to go to those mountains for practice/learning. I'm sure not many states can provide that to teach the students properly. Way too many rookies right now on the road compared to before. He was trying to get it in a gear when he burned his brakes?! WHAT?! Everybody knows that you must have the truck in proper gear BEFORE the downgrade and not remove it under any circumstances ! I know that every truck is different, but I'm sure I can go down in my Cascadia fully loaded at the speed limit (45) using the proper gear and Jake's without even touching the brakes. Pretrip probably would not save from it (doesnt say if there were any problems) but definitely says he was not in a gear going down using brakes - big no no. Driver did not have proper training.

Especially those of us from the coalfields where we have more on the trailer than most big road trucks and loads weigh is to go slow use the lower gears and never ever try to shift after you start down. Mutha Trucker, i watch a lot of your vids, i love the content and you do a great job, THANK YOU for bringing this out there! This video brought me to finally say something, my history in transportation spans 40+ years, when i started there were not very many driving schools if any especially in Northern California, you had to know someone with a truck to get into trucking, i learned in the woods watering roads for a logging company on the weekends when i was 14, i drove an old Mack with twin sticks a 5 x 4 with an old 335 cummings, i learned at an early age the respect it took to handle a loaded vehicle of that size, at 18 i got my first semi a set of doubles hauling locally from the greater Chico area to Turlock and back i was trained for 2 weeks and turned loose, i get the lack of training today especially in the schools hell most of the trainers aren't competent enough to train and i hate to say this but it is true! I don't drive anymore but still hold my license but when i quit i was running the bay area up to the Northern Coast everyday with grades up to 16% and never had a problem, but i did see my fare share of rooky drivers in places they shouldn't have been...i guess i'm just getting at the fact that the training has to ramp up a few notches, people complain about pay well if you have the experience they will pay! you can pretty much name your price! Godspeed you Mutha Truckers! Keep up the great content! i'm out

Guys like that are the ones I see on 68 in western MD. I'm going down the hills in a truck at 40-50mph and using mostly jake with a bit of brake pedal to keep the speed right and the brakes cool. I get passed all day long by these guys fully loaded(flatbeds, car haulers, etc). Friday I was coming east when I saw traffic stopped at the bottom of a long downgrade going west. Even from the other side of the highway the stench of burning brakes was strong. Someone had crashed and the right lane was closed at the bottom of the hill causing a traffic backup. Guys like this go flying down the hills cooking the brakes by the time they get to the bottom and it's only a matter of time before they push it a bit too fast and/or find stopped traffic at the bottom and simply can not stop. As far as sentencing, it does seem like a genuine accident and sentencing should take that into account. Him ever driving a truck again? Not even a chance. That should be a lifetime CDL loss. When I got my CDL, my first run went through I70 Mountains to Denver, that was the scariest 5 hours of my life. I’m 35, I can only imagine what was going through that poor kids mind. THIS is why they don’t allow truck drivers to drive at such young ages. The experience and judgment you need to make the right decisions at the right time is critical in this industry. Of course this kid didn’t take the damn ramp, he was probably balling his eyes out knowing he’s about to die cause he has to crash to stop! 110 years is so obnoxious for an accident, pray for those innocent people who died, but this child should not lose his life because of this. It was not malicious or intentional. By the sounds of it, he was not familiar on how to prevent break fading.

They grow inpatient with slow trucks, but losing a few minutes on your trip is just a part of life you have to deal with. If you cannot see the drivers face in the mirror, the driver cannot see you, respect that This young man should be given a job teaching new drivers what not to do, that would not be an easy sentence. A horrible accident, but that is what this was, an accident due to improper training.

So they should let him go because he doesn't understand? I don't believe that! The test is 150 questions and then you have to pass the pre trip test then the driving test.. So you're saying they skipped all that and just gave him a cdl??

I'm actually a proud Republican a d have a cdl and have been driving for over 25 Years. But I won't personally attack you and stup to your level. The signs for speed are in numbers not letters, the shape of the signs have meaning too, and you keep ignoring the fact he passed the runaway ramps, but you have the wright to believe what you want and keep sticking up for him but it sounds like you are the liberal wanting a killer to get a slap on the hand. And if we were face to face I'm positive you wouldn't be this disrespectful to me. Have a nice day..

I dont think its a matter of him not doing his pretrip, im almost certain he just didn't go down slow enough and couldn't shift down in time. Possibly didn't know how to use his Jake brake

I agree.Pretrip doesn't have anything to do with it. It was his lack of experience and lack of common sense. He could have made it down the hill even without jake brake if he put in low enough gear. Even when he realized he can't slow down he should have used ramp or even put it in the ditch.

Bad for him!!! What about the families he disregarded and killed their son, daughter, brother, sister, mother, father, spouse. Don't be sorry for him. Yes it could have been prevented. All ACCIDENTS are preventable. There is always a root cause and usually several contributing factors. Everyone loosely uses the term accident. Take out the root cause, it would not have happened!!! Stay safe everyday and you won't have accidents that kill.

I see hundreds of these “drivers” out there every day and wonder why there aren’t more accidents like that one. My thoughts go out to the family of the people killed that day and wish that drivers would take just a few minutes to not only check their truck over every morning but to pay more attention to their surroundings as they drive. We’re not on vacation out here.

I went through that area for the first time in my career a few weeks ago, grossed at 79,500. Scared me to death, I’d smoked my brakes once before and that was because I didn’t know my rig at that time on 87 headed to Phoenix. I held 25-35 mph on this hill and that was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat with my equipment working properly! Just a long steep grade.

Born and raised Coloradoan. I can not count how many times a driver has smoked their brakes coming down Genesee mountain. (The last down grade into Wheatridge) As a driver you are taught everything you do can end up possibly killing someone. Your pre and post-trip inspections as we all know are some of the most important things we can do to keep everyone around us safe. This driver should never been put on I-70 without the proper training/ experience. That being said he was still responsible for driving his truck in a safe manner. His refusal to take the runaway ramps showed his neglect to protect the motoring public around him. I do not believe he should get any reprieve as he made a choice to stay on the road instead of ditching his truck to protect others. Yes it is easy to say this when it's not me making that choice. However I have chosen the ditch to protect others even when they were at fault. My life vs theirs, their life is more valuable at that instance.

My first downhill I lost my breaks. Hit about 90. 2 curves then straight away. I did touch the brakes for 20 miles. Pulled over truck stop down the road. My partner woke up and made me drive for 20 more minutes. Then touted me the correct way next trip. After that I didn’t ride the brakes after that.
