Truck Camping: CHANGES/UPDATES to the slide-out extension

www.coloradobackcountryadvent...
Hey Everyone! After spending all summer truck camping in my custom design 2 foot slide-out extension, I've decided there are a few tweaks to be made. This video details the changes and updates I plan to make over the next few weeks while I'm in Kansas getting my back all squared away. I look forward to getting back on the road once I've got everything squared away...thanks for tuning in! #keeptruckin'

You've inspire me! A couple years ago I had a 4 door Wrangler, since then, I've stopped pitching tents. Now I have an old Grand Cherokee that I sleep in. I'm slowly but surely converting it for overlanding. This concept is a great idea to fab up a fiberglass slide out on rails with a canvas bottom half. Thank you!

Brilliant. I wish Snugtop made a product for my camper shell. My Tundra is crewmax 5.5 Not enough to sleep in. But give me 1 more foot and I am perfect

Thanks Man! I've really enjoyed this new setup. It's working out well and I'm excited to make a few tweaks to get it 100% dialed in. How are things in Utah? Have you received any snow yet?

Colorado Backcountry Adventures you know there is no 100% dialed in right? Hahaha. Let’s shoot for 95%. Storm is moving in right now. Snow level dropping to 6500 tonight. Should wake up to snow capped peaks. Been working on my crazy new project. Wasn’t sure why I decided to do it but recent events have made me realize why I did! Really enjoying the podcast as well. I’m a podcast fiend. I prefer it to television.

Hey Brian, I would suggest giving fiberglass a go. Build a your framework out of 2"x 2" strips giving yourself the required sloping on the roof, and desired opening for the doorway. With fiberglass you have the option to make smooth rounded corners if you like, and can get it fully waterproof to boot. Also, you may even come out with a lighter unit overall. After you are done with all the fiberglass work, you can paint the exterior with bed liner to make it even more robust and absolutely for sure waterproof.

Hot glue or silicone works great for sealing the little holes in those cubbies. I used Hot glue and it keeps them dust free and completely dry!

Most definitely! I need to be more thorough when I do my updates and not cut any corners like I did with the top of the slide out extension. Hope you enjoy the video, have a great evening!

Brilliant build! With the wider door opening, consider double doors with upgraded locking mechanisms. Also, an awning mounted off the back of the topper would help with water diversion and a act as a porch of sorts. Lastly. If you plan to progress to a 2.0 version I highly recommend using aluminum. Save on weight, gain space, more weather resistant, pop rivet or welded assembly, easy to modify a basic unit to fit ones needs. Tail gate extensions so the slid out length can be greater. First time viewer. Subscribed so I can catch up.

Hi Peterrabbit Roberts - I personally have an ARE topper but I've heard great things about Leer and other top brands. I might suggest going with a high-rise topper to give you a bit more head room. Good luck with your topper search and thanks for checking out my channel! - Brian

Just a thought on your pull out. Putting a one inch lip around the innermost section of the pullout (matched to the contour of the tailgate rails and topper) would allow for two things. First it would create a positive stop at all points not just the rails on the bottom. Two the mating points of the pullout could be lined with closed cell foam (like the link below) to seal out the elements at fairly low cost/effort ( 1x2 screwed around the edge of the pullout). Cut into strips this would also allow for a clamp seal between topper and bed to eliminate drafts. www.grainger.com/product/GRAINGER-APPROVED-Water-Resistant-Closed-Cell-5GDK0?cm_sp=Product_Details-_-Products_Based_on_Your_Search-_-IDPPLARECS&cm_vc=IDPPLARECS

Been following your build for awhile. Very awesome. What do you think would be a quick bed extender just for more legroom? I saw someone made a fold out metal rectangular prism that attached to the back window of the camper and the bottom was the tailgate. Want something non-permanent that can be taken down and minimal in size..
