Hi Tom. The undocumented feature to switch mw internal ferrite to telescopic or external antenna input. Shortwave will use the external antenna once something is plugged in. Going from memory here and speaking about the 901x as i own only that one. Good vid btw, i enjoy your testing and discoveries.

Interesting comparison. For the landed stations, it seems like the s/n reading was higher on the H501X, but being two different models, they may not be calibrated identically. Thanks for the post, Tom.

If you want the best of the best then the 501x but the 990 is more than adequate.

If you would ask me i would say that the Tecsun PL990X and the Tecsun H501X are the same performing radios. Thanks for sharing this video Hamrad88. 73's 👍

990 is the same as the 990x… the “x” stands for export market for sale outside of China

The forgotten model...the PL660, In my opinion is just as good as these two. I have used the 660 for 10 years all over Europe with great results. Of course I can't actually compare the three as I can't afford it, but I think you have the PL660. Maybe you might make a comparison for a future video. Brian, Germany 🇩🇪

I couldn't figure out why my computer made the notification noise. It didn't, it was Tom's.

Tom I hope you do a review on the new Retekess TR-629 which has just come out. It features MW/FM/SW bands with digital readout and direct entry frequency tuning with recording direct to memory card. It’s a larger portable desktop style radio, it looks quite good. Shame the demonstrations of the radio from Retekess weren't so good, as they have people who always look like they are not interested and have no clue on what they are doing.

@@hamrad88 Thanks. Would like to know what the sensitivity is on the Shortwave band. It has quite a wide frequency range from 2.3-21.1kHz, has MP3 player feature. And runs on 3 D cell batteries. Also has a very long whip antenna for better reception too.

Tom, I require your professional opinion. Would you recommend the Tecsun H-501x over the Eton Elite 750? I moved into the city from the country which has already affected my current radio performance. I am considering giving my Grundig to my son, and I want a new radio to receive AM and SW signals. I understand that I will need an external antenna, but I've heard some negative reviews about the Eton.

I have quite a few ot the radios that you have reviewed just got got a transistor to repair my favorite one thedx 440. RF section seems to have a problem,

Hi Tom can you say which radio you are playing impossible to know which one if you can not see you. If people would like to try to follow Tom with your eyes closed and figure out is the h501 or the pl990x is playing could be an interesting experiment for people who are curious thank you very much Joe

I am blind, and I thought he did a very good job of telling me which radio he was using while he was using it! Better than most! It’s radio, not television no matter what all the waterfall displays say! Remember, listen with your ears not your eyes!

which one has the better sounding speaker? I'm debating between the two, and i'll use FM and bluetooth more than SW.

The 501 is stereo. Other than that they sound about the same.

I don't think so but there are a ton of features on each radio.

The H-501 is so tall and large that it makes the PL-990 look like Tecsun's most compact SSB capable receiver, the PL-330! 📻☺️ Enjoyed the side by side rough comparison, Tom! Did you know that your PL-990x has an undocumented 1 kHz bandwidth "hack" for MW/SW bands? I don't know why Tecsun hid this bandwidth when it could have included 1 kHz to the PL-990's existing bandwidth options. 🙄

The 5000 station only will be the same in both radios if the scan was started both at the same time...5000 station is not sending signal all the time..maybe could be a reason that the 990 didn't get it

Battery life on the H501 is very poor. What's going on here ? SSB sounds just as bad as the PL-880. DSP portables have terrible sounding SSB - too processed. The PL-660 and PL-680 work better for SSB.

Sounds like you got a bad one. You need to return it asap. Mine has none of those problems. I have the X version. The previous versions did have a lot of problems.

A bit of a late reply here lol. I did receive a H501X from Anon Co and its been working great. No battery drain issue and a noticeable improvement in ssb reception. It's still a pricey receiver however and the DSP chipset still creates some harshness with the audio. I can live with that as the pros outweigh the cons with this receiver.

@@tomadamagica3649 Much the same. I did find the noise floor a bit higher on the 501 which made it a bit harder to dx weak ssb signals.
