This is often the case when trying to match the tone of recordings. Hard for a riff to sound as big with the same amount of saturation/gain when it hasn't been compressed/eq'ed/layered to fit in the mix with other instruments supporting, such as bass and drums.

He points out something a lot of musicians don’t get. The music overall is what constitutes the heaviness. A heavy rhythm and bass can fool you into thinking a guitar part is cranked with distortion when more than likely it’s cleaner than you think. Queens, SOAD, and even Zeppelin are great examples

Yep. Also using the neck pickup- they compensate for the muddiness a neck pup gets by using tons of mids to bring back the definition in the tone. Overall the video did a great job getting close to the vibe & tone of the original but when you really analyze it side by side there's often too much gain & treble

I've been searching for about 15 years and in that time I've discovered one of the biggest things you can do to get it is in playing technique. I think that's what LRGD has more of than this reverb guy. The nuances of Josh's and/or Troy's playing.

Homme's sound centers around those old Ampeg SVT amps that just don't ever distort. On top of that, he uses medium/low/vintage powered pickups. While his old rig had those DiMazrio's in an Ovation Ultra (LP style guitar), most of his newer stuff is semi hollow or full hollow. That's going to lend itself to an "airier" sound. He has some pretty gnarly pedals (that PDF is on his board, along with an Ultimate Octave/Foxx Tone Machine), but his sound is much cleaner than most expect.

For the most part though, the Queens sound is a combination of Josh's pedals driving a high headroom amp (that's what those Ampegs were famous for) with Troy's AC30 tone. Dean also uses some pretty clean amps (Twin Reverb and a Magnatone). They use all sorts of crazy stuff in the studio to get their unique sounds for albums, but they're live rigs are a lot simpler than people give them credit for.

I find the remark about using single coil guitars very interesting. On stage you do see him playing single coils mostly, whilst Josh is on the humbucker side of things. However, I wonder if that's the same in the studio. Given that single coils usually can be fitted in a mix easier, I wouldn't be surprised if they were using them mostly when recording.

When he says too much gain..seems he’s really saying amp breakup is used. Outside some octave fuzzes and stuff. EQ, boost, EQ, Boost and so on. A lot of the tones are just an Ampeg VT40, and EQ mostly. Boss EQ to cut out some bottom woofyness hitting the amp. Then Parametric EQ Boost at the end, to hit the 1-2khz range a little wider. Then use the volume control on the last EQ to control hitting the amp. In this video I can see the PDF2 doing the job the Boss GE7 would be doing. Usually if it’s cutting it’s been the Boss live at least at 400hz and below especially where the PDF2 here is cutting on a LOT of songs. Boosting frequencies seems they prefer parametric, as it’s a bit cleaner to me, without over distorting. What nice about the Ampeg are that they get an almost cranked Bassman, Fuzzy Marshall going on. But there’s no annoying feedback you’d get from a distortion circuit. Working with an Ampeg VT40 cranked at 300hz rocker, is like EQIng a Green Big Muff, that doesn’t feedback lol. That’s how it feels to me! Cutting 400hz area a lot in parts to shape the final tone. They are very dark amps at times, that need aggressive EQ in a live mix. I think the SFT pedal, and a Boss EQ 7 would get most in the area. I own all the pedals shown. The Dirt Little Secret is my backup to my VT40 amp, when I’m playing a gig with a 1x12 Fender type amp. It’s a LOT of amp to carry around, if it’s not your core sound always. It goes well as a wet/dry combo though…or A/B. EQ pedals are used similar to cut coming in, turn off to let all frequencies sound big. Using subtractive EQ thus ways, allows for so many tones! One thing about this band, is all the subtle studio EQ trickery being done by them. Most artists just pass that stuff off to the FOH with money like that. Or use a Gigrig..cool to see they do it the complicated way like the rest of us lol.

Great vid. Fun way to review how close you got it the first go 'round. It reminds me of when directors watch Honest Trailers.
