@@gonyx4 it is literally impossible in real politics. Most empires perform some sort of provocation before invasion. Usually killing own noble like he was killed by nearby country. In XX it they explode something on own territory and find proof how it was enemy's doing. Troy was very rich city, worth invading.

Hector is the only man truly respected in the Iliad. Family man, husband, father, soldier, prince, dutiful son. He fights for his country only, not for spoils or glory. Somehow or another "hector" became a pejorative, a synonym for bully. He's the only man in the Epic I have respect for.

I respect Achilles wishing to be remembered and always fighting to be the best, but I agree that Hector was a solid man in most iterations of the Trojan War

Achilles is a demigod and above all loved by the gods, that battle was won by the gods.Hector knew he would die in any case and the gods would never allow Hector to scratch Achilles, but Hector managed to cut the armor, and this shows his great skill

Hector is the favorite of Apollo or the son of Apollo depending on which version you read. Apollo kills Achilles by guiding the arrow of Paris, or by becoming Paris depending on version. "The gods" are always fighting with each other and do not make unanimous decisions like all preferring Achilles.

Top notch choreography and expertly shot. Compare this to most modern "shaky-cam" fight scenes; this is light years better. You can clearly see where each fighter is, what they're doing, why they are doing it. There's no ridiculous gymnastics, no stupid jokes or one-liners. As the fight drags on, exhaustion starts to kick in, even for Achilles. The breathing becomes heavier, the moves, especially Hector, become sloppy and less focused. Most modern fight scenes everyone just kinda walks away like it's no big deal. This one actually has weight and feel to it. Beautiful sequence.

Not often you got the actual actors do the entire fight scene and it also ends up being one of the best shot fight scenes in movie history. Hats off to Pitt and Bana. Absolute legends.

This whole scene is incredibly well done. The subtle music (drumming), the sound of the attacks, blocks, and clangs, the movement is flashy but not to the point of disbelief, and there are stakes for both men since this takes place well into the last bit of act 2. Favorite scene in the movie for me.

Respects only his own pack of wolves.. The author of the epics (Homer) described gods and demigods very much as beings of instincts and animalistic passions. And then he contrasts them with humans; if humans succumb to fight with animalistic passions directly, humans will loose. In order to conquer them, humans must use different skills.

This duel is incredible because it feels so evenly matched but at the same time it is clear that Achilles is in control. Hector is the only fighter that blocks several of his signature moves. And also there are some moments where if it were anyone else in Achilles's place they would be dead. Like at the point where Hector draws his sword.

Yes definitely. Achilles dodged so many attacks it’s ridiculous how skilled of a fighter he was. You can train a whole lifetime to defeat Achilles and still wouldn’t win lol

Brad Pitts physic and athleticism in this dual is very impressive. From just an athlete’s point of view, i can appreciate the choreography that this is actually him performing these lunges and strikes. It also helps to sell the fact that Hector is in way over his head.

I'm surprised Andromache didn't throw Paris and Helen off the top of that tower after this.

Hector was against all odds when fighting a demigod, but he most certainly didn't make it easy for Achilles, which was pure testament to his fighting skill. Achilles was the Greatest Warrior, but Hector was the Greatest Hero.

I watched this 100 times back in the day … I’d just replay it over and over.

The chereographer for Achilles movements did a fantastic job. Achilles' motion was fluid, precise, and definitive. He made hector look like he was just spamming attacks. The level of skill displayed by Achilles was truly leagues above Hector's.

Patroclus was actually Achilles lover. That's the emotion you see in Achilles once he finds out about his death. The offspring of the fallen angels were checking every box when it came to debauchery, lol.

The first time I saw this fight I was like "WTF they just pulled their swords out of thin air!" Now, like 20 years later, I finally see that they had them behind their shields at the beginning!

Still one of the best fighting one on one in cinematic history!! Brad Pitt was perfect to this role!

One of the most well choreographed 1to1 combat in a cinema.

Usually no man can last even more than a swing against Archilles as shown earlier in the film. He did great for fighting so long & so many exchanges even made Archilles breathing quite hard there.

@2:02 I always found fascinating how the design of the greek shield help with versatility by using the spear. in that position you still can protect yourself and at the same time strike with the spear.

Cool detail in this fight is, you can see Hektor becoming tired as fight went on, and Achillies is basically demigod so he has unnatural stamina. Just before Achillies stabs him with the spear, you can see how tired Hektor was. It's kinda nice detail.

Horrible fight scene I hated what they did. Hector and Achilles are wearing the same armor, fighting on the same field and using the same weapons but they portray it as if Achilles wasn’t wearing his armor the hector would have got him or if hector didn’t trip on that rock he could of gotten Achilles. Achilles managed to avoid the rocks and hector had the same protection and Achilles won because he was the better warrior he had the upper hand the entire fight.

3:40 to 3:46 is excellent footwork and defense by Achilles while being on his back foot going backwards.

i love this fight scene so much. it's perfect. at the start of the fight you can clearly see the two men are virtually equals. as the fight wears on, though, you see luck and fatigue start to kick in. hector is a noble, a man of privilege. Achilles is a man forged entirely by war. he has no noble blood nor claim to a throne. he has his ability to fight. at the end hector loses because hes tired, not because he's a lesser fighter. the illiad describes the fight as a duel of both mortals and gods. when the gods abandon hector and only then can Achilles kill him.

Hector showed strength, courage and honor. Achilles was blinded by hatred. At the end, they were equal as man, but Hector wasn't a demigod and his mortality got him tired meanwhile Achilles was just getting started, combat was sealed since their birth.

Look at Patroclus for comparison, he was younger and wasn’t groomed to rule yet he was way more dutiful and actually offered a fight to Hector of all peoples .

I like the way Hector dodges Achilles swift attacks. His reflexes are impressive and I like how he charges towards Achilles at the end.

Fun fact: Brad Pitt and Eric Bana made a agreement where in every hard blow you should pay $100 and every light blow $50. Pitt ended up paying Bana $750, while Bana didn't owe Pitt anything.

I just realized this, when Hector says "I've seen this moment in my dreams" and then talks about funeral arrangements, he already knows :(

How infuriating it must be to swing at someone who moves with such skill and grace and how terrifying it must be to know this same man will plunge his steel in your flesh and butcher your dead body.

The moment at 3:40 after cutting Achilles armor, fighting with a demigod for three minutes straight. He picked up his broken spear and fights like hell again, and you see in Achilles face that this is the greatest man he's ever fought. Without the God's he would have lost. Achilles would never acknowledge such a thing but you see it in his expression in that moment.

You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue. You will wonder the underworld, blind, def, and dumb. And all the dead will know: This is Hector. The fool who thought he killed Achilles.

one of the few instances where the characters taking off their helmets to show their faces for the cameras is well-motivated in-universe.

This movie has exceptionally good fight choreography and is very underrated. This scene is amazing. Eric Bana was awesome in this. So was Brad Pitt.

Wolfgang was a genius directing this film, one of the greatest war movie ever

I simply love this fight scene. My only criticism is: I doubt the Greeks would not have followed Achilles to see what he intended to do.

I love the drum beat playing in the back. Each note tells of measurements, cultural story and discipline that go well with accuracy of skill of the duel. Then when the woman’s cry begins- pure sadness, pain and unfairness people had to go through in the ancient world. Amazing scene. Hector looked at death and drew his sword ready to die but before that he would fight. Absolute balls, and Achilles is scary as shit

The reaction shots of Diane Kruger and Siri Svegler really sell the emotional impact of this fight.

"Yeah, that's right. I'm putting this stone right here" Achilles the night before the fight

This movie is soo underrated it's unbelievable!

Incredible & without the level of CGI we're bombarded with today.

Hector and his wife - the only two likeable charakters here...

Eveeyone is talking about hector and what not but what about the dude that got killed with flying arrows when he saw the many ships coming towards trojan unexpectedly he was kool too

Pretty impressive how they're dexterously and lethally handling the spears with one hand! If you've ever held an original one, those are heavy.

Well, it's the bronze age so weapons are not THAT heavy, but considering that men were considerably small back then, they required good physics, something the greeks excelled into.

This was actually a great sequence. Bravo.

seriously. there's no reason not to just shoot achilles down while he's standing there vulnerable since your armies are going to fight to the death anyway.

One of my favourite things about this fight is that it highlights something the film has been, somewhat, subtly showing off throughout it's run time; that Achilles is on a completely different level to anyone else. All through the film we see Achilles, almost involuntarily, maybe even subconsciously, making movements with his body that either move him out of harms way, or take a blow on his shield or an armoured part of his body. Then the film gives us this duel. The two greatest warriors from either side facing off against each other, and it become clear very quickly that Hektor doesn't stand a chance. He throws everything he's got at Achilles and we see, more clearly, what the film has been showing us about the way Achilles fights, we see those inhuman movements that keep him from harm (one of the more noticeable ones is at 3:32, where it almost looks like his leg is pulled out of the way by some unseen force), and we see the way Achilles needlessly flourishes almost every blow because he knows he can't be harmed. But, despite all this, the film does Hektor a service that the original poem didn't. It, not only, let's Hektor have a fight with Achilles (in the poem he runs away until Achilles manages to catch him), but it lets him actually land a blow that gives Achilles a moment of pause.

As boys, we wanted to be like Achilles, but as men, we wish we can be like Hector, #YOU DID THIS PARIS, I HOPE YOUR PROUD

Love how Hector is like: *"Fuck it! I'm gonna lose anyway so let's play dirty!"* and grabs the broken spear!

Achilles still had no fear, walked right up to him took the spear and then the final blow with the sword

I love the sounddesign of that movie so much. So different from everything else I know from movies. Really metallic, but also when they cross their spears is a real joy to hear

Despite anything else, I actually think even with Achilles bluster at Hector, he respected him deep down. Hector fought with honor. Achilles soiled his name when he dragged Hector's body and paraded it. It was the move of a coward, and dishonored himself as a whole as Achilles was a Myrmidon and the demigod son of Peleus King of Myrmidon and Thetis the Nereid.

The fact he barely breaks a sweat and dominates the majority of the fight against "the best he fought" Hector, considered the best warrior in the world by those unaware of Achilles, shows just the elite level Brad Pitts Achilles is at..

Hector was the real hero in this movie,fought for honor and love to which he died at the hands of someone he knew he could never defeat portraying how brave and courageous he also was 💪🏻✌️

cause of this movie Hector became my personal favorite of historic warriors!

Just brilliant all around the fight choreography, the pre scene where Hèctor embraces the fam knowing he’s going to lose. Just fantastic film all around.

3:37 Achilles is like “oh, so this is what it feels like to be challenged by a skilled fighter.” Its like that scene in Rocky II when Apollo Creed’s manager says “I saw you beat that man like I’ve never seen a man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you!”

Achilles at 2:23 is just a perfect shot. A war machine and just laser focused on the goal.

Hector wasn't no pushover, the ONLY thing that got him was his fear, he paused and got gripped with fear for a slight second, and as they say, on the battlefield, that's eternity

I’d say it was a bit more than that. Maybe we can attribute his fear to his overall performance, but everything about the depiction of this fight showed an Achilles with the dominant control of the situation. Hector was burning through his energy a lot faster just trying to hold on while Achilles maintained his control, form and pace throughout. Barring an error on Achilles’ part, it was only a matter of time till Hector had nothing left. Still a hell of a fight.

One of the coolest fight sequences ever.

I love the way everyone knows Achilles' favorite move by now. And then as if the rest of the fight didn't show it already, Hector blocking the move multiple times, showing although Hector was doomed he was a nearer to a match that anyone else Achilles fights.

I remember the interviews with Brad Pitt and Eric Bana after this scene was shot. They revealed that they had quietly agreed to go all-out in this fight scene, risking injury to give it all teh realism they could. Those blows against one another were full-force

Best brad’s character. This is timeless and one of the most accurate 1vs1 spear and sword fights.

Pitt and Bana made this an incredible fight for the big screen. One of the best ever.
