    Great tips! I inherited a passed down mower (my 1st) and ran into the exact same headscratching about the no oil flow issue. Glad to see it's as simple as just twisting more, I expected sludge/buildup at first being a pessimist. For the filter, I have a smaller oil filter wrench so I'll try using a spacer like Cape below mentioned, wish me luck.

    On these types of riding lawnmowers its best recommended to do the first oil change is after 5 hours of run time. Then once a season and twice for heavy use...

    You don't need to fill the new filter with oil, just coat the rubber gasket with oil. Always remove the dipstick when draining too, helps the flow. Also no need to buy a Kohler filter. I bought a Fram for $5.75 at my local auto parts store which by the way makes the Kohler filters! BTW my strap oil filter wrench was too big so I ended up using a rock as a spacer and worked fine!

    If you clean the oil filter housing with a paper towel you will get lint inside the oil. If you must clean it, use lint free towels. The reason this matters is that the lint can get pumped through the oil passages in the engine and on to your bearings. This can score your bearings. Oil contamination is not good. Not trying to criticize, just trying to add to the knowledge pool.

    Most standard consumer grade lawnmowers do not come with meters built in. High end models may feature this as an add on or in a menu if they have a digital display incorporated. Without a meter visual/auditory observation may be the only clues as to a range of hours run. I've seen consumer grade engines at the 300 hour range sound like they had double that on them.

    The oil capacity and type may very well be different. Please keep in mind the manufacturers change the engine specs, engine size may vary, and brand/style. Troy-Bilt is pretty consistent using Kohler or Briggs and Stratton but these engines carry variations from year to year. When I purchased mine I recieved three manuals 1) basic operation, 2) specific engine manual 3) warranty and accessories. You can access these online at Troy-Bilt website and I recommend taking a picture of the information sticker on the inside of the hood. I also took a picture of the oil filter for quick reference.

    This is my problem. I remove the dip stick and it clearly shows I need to change the oil. (after just 33 hours) On my riding mower you have a yellow part you turn counter clock wise to drain the oil. (Dipstick still out) I do this and wait 2 hours. (YES I ran the mower for 15 minutes so the oil would be hot and ready to come out.) NOTHING...not one drop. Dipstick shows it is full but dark so change NEEDED. 💥🙄Help what do I do now?

    Are you pulling the sleeve out after turning? The oil will only drain if that piece is turned and pulled out. If the oil refuses to drain, you may have sludge built up around the drain plug. Try adding a bit of new oil and running to warm up. It only takes 5 or so minutes to warm the engine oil. You can also try an oil flush with commercial cleaners sold in automotive stores. These may help but can cause other build up to come out as well. If not improved try a probe of the valve with a thin tool

  • @Matty_Ice_Reviews

    @Matty_Ice_Reviews

    2 жыл бұрын

    Battery dying could be from infrequent use, old battery, or a short. I would start with a trickle charger in-between cuttings and try to see if that helps. If not check battery age. If that does not resolve it could be a short or a bad alternator. Those can be trickier to diagnose as a wiring harness is fairly long as cumbersome to check for wear/wire damage and the alternator will need a multimeter to test draw.

    10W30 or 20W50?

  • @Matty_Ice_Reviews

    SAE 30 is the best overall based on what my manufuacturer lists. 5W30 and 10W30 can be used but may not be recommended by owners manual. I would be very hesitant to use 20W50 in a conventional riding lawn mower. 20W50 is famous for leaving an engine dry running for several moments due to visocsity.
