I found Paris bearable in this movie, not that the portrayal of him here changes my feelings towards Paris in the original story (briefly summarised as 'I don't like him') but in any case I'd still rather go for Oddyseus, Achilles or Hector (if I ever stood a chance against women like Briseis, Andromeda or Penelope even if we don't see her in this movie).

"War is young men dying and old men talking." About three thousand years later, not much has changed.

When Achilles asked Briseis if she would come back to Greece with him, he was actually willing to give up the glory his mother had foretold was hand in hand with his Doom, but when his cousin died and he killed Hector and the king came to ask for his sons body. Achilles knew his fame and death were sealed that is why he cried and told hector he would see him soon. At least that is how I read the poem and this movie, plus being a veteran of war you have to respect anyone willing to die for their beliefs.

In the book it only says 'And they fought like gods. Then: Achilles Won' The Director demanded a great choreographed fight here, and nobody had clue one what it should be. The actors heavily contributed to get what we see here.

The fight scene between Hector and Achilles was so well choreographed and cohesive. The movement, sound effects, camera angles. Perfect.

Achilles died after being touched in the heel because in the original ancient Greek story, he was actually immortal except for this part. It's because when his mother Thetis dipped him in the river Styx as an infant (making him immortal), she held him by one of his heels. So it was his only weak spot. The tragedy for him, was to be killed by one of the weakest and most feeble character in the story. And also, to be killed for vengeance, exactly the same way he killed Hector for vengeance. He tasted what he did to others.

In the tales, Achilles never had a fight with Hector because Hector ran away and Achilles had to chase him around the city. Paris killed Achilles before the Trojan Horse. Agamemnon and his brother survived. Helen went back to Sparta and Odysseus got lost at sea on the way home which lead to the Homer's Odyssey in which it took him ten years to get back to his wife. And the Gods played major roles in the whole thing, in fact it was Aphrodite that started the war in the first place. So, Hollywood definitely took some liberties with this one. Oh, and the Trojan war lasted 10 years, not 4 weeks like the movie suggests.

@@SLJShortt That's in SOME tales and plays not all of them. In at least the one I read he does indeed kill Hector and have a talk with Priam who makes a speech very much like that one. It is true that this movie changed things quite a bit esp leaving ALL the supernatural stuff. Far as I'm aware all of the several stories that have Achilles and the Trojan war in them ALL have the Gods playing some parts, so all involve at least magical/Divine happenings.

"Oh, they're in that thing..." Yes, that's the Trojan Horse. That's why some things (esp some kinds of computer viruses but other things as well) are called Trojan Horses. They look harmless on the outside, but inside something dangerous or damaging lurks.

It's crazy how Orlando Bloom can play a bitch in this movie but also be an athletic badass in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings movies. Orlando Bloom is honestly one of my favorite actors and only someone like Hector can make him look weak

When a hero dies they celebrate them with a pyre, burning until only the large bones are left. Saying you will 'drink to their bones' is actually giving honor, not an insult. Paris is supposed to let himself be killed to gain honor after he loses the duel. But his morale breaks and he runs like a dog, and Hector should not kill Menelaus like that. It is all dishonorable and weakens Troy. This foreshadows that Troy must now fall. Before this, Achilles' disrespect to the temple of Apollo makes the gods favor and help Troy. The gods constantly connived for both sides, for their own ends. Athena greatly favored Odysseus with almost no change, no matter what she was told to do by Zeus. The fact Achilles is not religious or care about the gods, like Anna, is very interesting. Maybe this is why he stands above superstitious kings and heroes, but also why he is a tragic figure with no foundation.

Peter O'Toole, one of the greatest actors of our age. That delivery of those lines when he retrieves Hectors body... speechless.

Hector vs Achilles is the best fight scene of all time. The choreography, emotion, acting and style are unmatched. Complete perfection.

You can always tell who is the better fighter in the battle between Hector and Achilles. Hector is a EXTREMELY good fighter but Achilles is on another level. Achilles had more strength and stamina. You can see Hector start to struggle towards the end but Achilles NEVER faltered. At the end of the fight it was clear Achilles was just playing with him.

Homer's Illiad (the poem-story that the main Trojan war is based upon) has two alternate endings, one by Homer himself and one by the Romans... In the classical ending that Homer wrote Menelaus (king of Sparta and Helen's husband) did not die at the hands of Hector and after the war was over Helen went back to him and lived out her life in Greece as his wife, the Trojans were destroyed, the few that escaped the city were hunted down and killed. If it is to be believed that Homer's Illiad was in fact an historical recording rather than a piece of fiction then this is a realistic outcome of war at that time where the goal was to annihilate enemy peoples and replace them. The Trojans were exterminated. Archaeological digs at the site of Troy show that around 3,100 years ago (the time of the main Trojan war) there was a cultural shift in the area from ancient Anatolian to classic Greek and this reinforces the theory that the Trojans were wiped out and replaced by Greeks. In the Roman ending (many Romans believed that Rome was founded by Trojan refugees) many of the prominent Trojans escaped the destruction of their city and regrouped at a meeting place on a hill overlooking Troy, from there they witnessed the burning of their city and a judiciary was quickly set up to punish those who had brought destruction down upon them - namely Paris and Helen. Paris and Helen were executed by hanging before the refugees headed west whereby they would eventually settle on the Italian peninsula and found the city of Rome.

@The Hollow Called White Before siege engines became a thing (where you could terrorise an enemy into submission or break down their walls) the only real way to win a siege was to outlast their grain stores since you would now be in possession of their farms and fields. This could take months and some sieges even lasted for years.

Brad Pitt did a legendary character justice. One of my favorite charcters in a movie.

In the Iliad, Hector has a last moment with his wife and son. His baby doesn’t recognize him in his helmet and starts crying. Hector takes off the helmet and says “My son, never fear me, for I love you more than life itself. The one I will soon forfeit. I had hoped to see you grow. To see the girls chase him, and to grow into a man. To see his children grow.” Makes what happens next so so much rougher.

The most moving scene in this film is when King Priam begs Achilles to return the body of Hector. (I especially like the moment when Achilles cries over the body of Hector and speaks to him.) The book of the Iliad ends with this scene, and it's easy to see why, as this is the most emotional and deep moment and the reader gets to sit with these feelings when they close the book. It was well-known by the ancient Greeks how the rest of the story of the war went, so there was no need for the Iliad to continue beyond this scene.

It’s based on historical stories. The legend of Troy is a battle from ancient history. It was from so long ago that we only know about it because of Homer’s writings. And his writings were of Legends from HIS time!! It was widely debated if Troy even existed until they actually found it! This movie tries to follow the legend, so it has to follow the narrative, but it is also meant to portray this legend in a realistic way. Achilles was said to have been dipped into a liquid that made him invincible/immortal, but he was held by his heel when he was dipped, so it was the one part that wasn’t actually dipped, hence his weak point. By having his death portrayed with the lone arrow in his heel, it shows a possible way this legend came about.

To this day I insist that both Achilles and Hector, as well as the people of Troy, did not deserve such a fate, since everything was caused by the stupidity of Hector's younger brother "Paris" and what bothered me the most was that such a person who caused everything. . . he stayed alive until the end without any consequences.

Love your reactions! On a side note, the Romans were said to have been descended from Aeneas who according to mythology escaped the trojan war and fled to Africa and then settled in Italy. Side, side note the Romans conquered Greece around 150 b.c. and celebrated the victory as avenging the Trojan war.

The setting is in the bronze age. Bronze age swords where surpirsingly heavy compared to later iron or steel swords and also actually much more flexible.

"Drink from yor bones" It literaly means that they will use your bones as containers to drink wine (simulating their blood) just like in the movies "Predator" taking the skulls, clean them and then use them to drink wine. It was a barbaric costume to laugh and insult a fallen enemy but it was commonly done by the ancient kings with the skulls of enemy kings, prince or generals.

I love that you two are into these period films set in ancient times, Alexander is another great one, as is Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator That weapon that Ajax is using is a maul, or a large warhammer. His most famous piece of war gear however was his shield, constructed of 7 layers of bull hide with an eighth layer of bronze on top, making it impervious to mortal spears. Ash, you mentioned that Sean Bean almost ALWAYS dies in the roles that he plays. But did you know this fact about him? A few years ago, he got into a really bad bar brawl and he was stabbed a few times. Apparently, when it was over, the bartender asked him if he needed an ambulance. He told them no, sat back down at the bar unfazed, and asked for another drink.😅 The man is so easy to kill onscreen, and very difficult to kill in real life.

hello dude, you did it again. I watch a ton of movie reactions and at least on the historical ones , i just love your reactions. And even though its not from your culture, you seem to have a very quick understanding which some people never get it. Do more historical movies, Gladiator should be on the list if you never saw it. Btw talking about that horse, think how powerful the legend is : over 2500 years ago and up to this day there is the saying : Trojan horse ( a type of computer virus ), also there was an old ancient saying , something like " Beware of greeks bearing gifts" which is a direct reference to the Trojan Horse , which the trojans believed it was a gift.

Persian culture would include Troy later, both geographically and in tradition. After Alexander's demise, Persia has a strong Hellenistic tradition as well.

I really enjoyed your reaction ngl 😂 The movie is different from *The Iliad* (the origin story of Trojan war) but it has a solid adaptation, a perfect cast and great performances. Hector is my favorite, he's an honorable man in *The Iliad* too, perhaps is also the only one who really gets his shit together during the Trojan war lol. You got it right that no one can defeat Achilles, he's a demi-god. He will never fall unless he kills Hector. According to the prophecy, Troy is destined to fall but it won't be if Hector's still alive. Greek army needs Achilles to kill Hector. But if Achilles kills Hector, his own death will soon follow. Finally, Achilles kills Hector and Troy falls and Achilles himself dies in Troy. Such a tragic story.

I never laughed ,or got emotional during movies videos reactions...till i found you guys ...i just love you...take care!

Absolute quality as always man! Watch both. This movie was one of my favorites for a long time and was the first to get me into movies like this. The dialog in this and as ypu said one liners are to me smart and impactful not just empty throwaway lines for humor or whatever which are still great but don't always serve a movie well ifbthat makes sense? when they filmed the Hector vs Achillies fight, it was one of the first scenes they did and it was like 40ish degrees (100 for the Americans)
