1:50 Re-pair your reader
If you’re having trouble pairing your Square Reader to your phone or tablet, there are a couple of troubleshooting steps you can try / to get things back up and running.
First, check and make sure that your device’s operating system is up to date. Just navigate to Settings app on your Apple or Android device. Once you confirm your device’s software is on the most recent version, double check that you’re using a compatible device. You can check out our site for a full list of compatible devices at square.com/compatibility.
make sure you are using the most recent version of the Square Point of Sale app by heading to the App Store on an Apple device, or the Play Store on an Android device.
Next, make sure that your Square Reader has enough charge to pair with your device. You can check the battery level on your Reader by tapping the small button on the side. We recommend attempting to re-pair your Reader on a full battery.
Next, you can try resetting the Bluetooth connection between your device and Square Reader.
On your phone or tablet, tap into the Bluetooth section in your settings. Under ‘Devices’, you should see the Square Reader listed. On an Apple device, tap the information symbol, then ‘Forget this device’. On an Android device, tap the gear icon, then ‘Forget’.
Once you have unpaired the Square Reader from your phone or tablet, you’ll need to reboot the Square Reader itself. Press and hold the button on the Square Reader for around 10-15 seconds. As you hold the button, the lights on the Reader will flash orange, then red, and then should flash off. Once the lights flash off, your Reader has been rebooted.
Before you re-pair the Reader, toggle your Bluetooth setting off, toggle back on and then turn your phone or tablet off and let it rest for 30 seconds. Turn your device back on.
Now, it’s time to try and pair your Square Reader. On your phone or tablet, tap into the Square Point of Sale app. Tap the menu icon,‘Settings’, and ‘Hardware’.
From here, you can select the Square Reader and tap the ‘Connect a Reader’ button. Follow the instructions on the screen of your device to begin pairing your Reader. If the troubleshooting is successful, you’ll see a confirmation on your screen that the Square Reader is connected.

After spending three hours trying to get help from square support and having them them take me through all their troubleshooting steps and then telling me I needed to get a new reader, when this one is only two years old, I found this. It's working again.

My square chip reader stopped working after a T-Mobile update. Did all the stuff in the video, resets and updates. Toggled the Bluetooth no luck. I went and bought another square, because my Bluetooth works on my truck,my Bluetooth headset. The new square same result. I prefer the chip reader, not the magstripe. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus. I emailed your support and was told, about the warranty to get another one.. I already bought the new one.

The Square contactless and chip card reader has a rechargeable battery. Battery life varies with use, but your reader should stay powered through a full business day of accepting payments. When the battery is low, it’ll take about 2 hours to fully charge. Here are some common Contactless + Chip Reader FAQs squ.re/3L5FJVK.

If your device does not have a built-in port, most devices have a compatible adapter that enables you to connect 3.5mm audio accessories, like headphones or the Square Reader, to the device’s main port (like a USB-C port). As long as you've activated your Square account, you can get in touch with our team directly by phone (or email) - just log into your account and head here: squ.re/contactsqsupport

We are sorry you are having issues with your reader. Let's try the troubleshooting steps mentioned below. If you are still having issues make sure to reach out to support squareup.com/help/us/en. 1. To turn on your Square Reader, press the button on your Square Reader once and wait a few seconds for it to reconnect. You should see one to four green lights flash depending on your Square Reader’s battery level. 2. Close and reopen the Square App on your device. 3. Update the Square app. 4. Turn on Bluetooth from your device’s settings. For iOS devices, this can be found in Settings → Bluetooth. Try turning Bluetooth off and back on. 5. Your Square Reader must be within 10 feet of your device. The Bluetooth connection may be out of range and could disconnect. 6. Check that your Square Reader has an adequate battery. Low battery may increase disconnections between your device and Square Reader. Press the button on your Square Reader once to see the battery level. If you see a blinking red light, that means your reader battery is low and should be charged immediately. If your reader is in a dock, make sure your reader is being charged. 7. Restart your phone, tablet, or other electronic device. You can also first try briefly putting your device into Airplane mode. 8. Reset your Square Reader. Hold down the power button for approximately 20 seconds. The lights on your Square Reader will flash orange, then red, and then they will stop flashing. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing. 9. Bluetooth will automatically turn off when your Square Reader is in a dock connected to a Square Stand by USB cable. Disconnect the USB cable from the Stand or dock and then attempt to pair. 10. Move your Square Reader away from sources of Bluetooth interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, fluorescent lights or using your reader on a metal table. 11. Clear your Bluetooth cache if you have an Android device. 12. See Apple’s article on Bluetooth interference for additional information, support.apple.com/en-us/HT201542.

It continuous takes to me the setup screen and wants me to order another reader and there is no other option. You cant contact Square via any method…Im out $49.00 and a full day of my life. Square sucks!

You're offering a free Magstripe Reader.. Where's the one for USB-C? Most Samsung phones no longer offer 3.5 audio jack and I'm messaging you here because your automated help chat bot is not exactly the kind of help I would expect from a known company as Square.

  • @square

Headset and Lightning are the only connection types available for the Square Reader for magstripe at this time. If your device does not have a built-in port, some devices include an adapter that enables you to connect 3.5mm audio accessories, like your favorite headphones or the Square Reader, to the device’s main port (like a USB-C port). We also recommend using the Square Reader for contactless and chip with your device, as it connects wirelessly with Bluetooth LE. You can use it to accept contactless card payments, chip card payments, and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Android Pay.

@@squareI'm guessing you're telling me I have to "Buy" a contactless reader or an adapter? The mailer I received offered a "Free" Magstripe Reader and I was highly considering it for my company just because of that. Please understand, many of my clients pay thru the app I use (percentage taken by app) or write a check for the final payment on contact. I'm not looking to spend money for a reader/adapter AND pay a percentage to square.
