TRON: The Legacy of Disney's Groundbreaking Black Sheep
Фильм және анимация
An analysis and history of Disney's TRON and its sequel TRON: Legacy discussing how the groundbreaking original was made, the decades of influence it had, and how its belated sequel became one of my favorite movies of all time, as well as what led to both becoming black sheep of Disney.

Try not to look for hidden Mickeys, because all their movies have em.
I loved Legacy. It was a bit ahead of its time because the 80s resurgence didn’t quite happen until 2016. I was obsessed with how Disney “updated” the grid. The crisp LED lines of the suits, the Bladerunner inspired layout of the Grid’s city landscape, the expanded vehicles and terrains, the world building possibilities! Legacy made Tron more than just a movie inside a video game. It created a cyberpunk species unique to Disney. Not a comic book IP or Star Wars spinoff.

It baffles me that EPCOT didn’t receive the Light Cycle ride. Legacy could literally provide a new world to Epcot. Don’t get me wrong, Guardians of the Galaxy is cute. Fun for all ages. Doesn’t make sense that it got a whole roller coaster when Tron is tethered to Disney property AND is a realistic take of what humans would do if they got hold of the Grid. ive been planning this comment for a while. We need to bring this show back. Ending one of the most unique and high quality shows of the last decade on a cliff-hanger and then discontinuing it is so mind blowingly stupid to me. If you go to the tron uprising subreddit you can see fans waiting for some new uprising news for over a decade. With posts as early as last year asking if they should give up hope because of the lack of news or reports. But now is the time. With the reveal of the new lightcycle roller coaster and the news for the third tron movie being released, (as well as some new weird tron based puzzle game apparently coming out?) it seems as if disney is trying to slowly revive tron. I urge anyone brave enough to go on all forms of social media to create an uproar. Show that there are still thousands of people interested in this series. Create accounts, fan pages, edits, posts literally just saying "Bring Back Tron" (especially uprising). There are 3 possible outcomes from this, either 1) Disney hears this and trys to respond in some way, which is a big +. 2) disney is already working on new tron projects and they will see this and possibly tease something as a form of responding. or finally 3) disney does nothing and at least we tried. Please, anyone who is able to do this, I beg of you, show that tron hasn't died yet.

What I find is that most videos about TRON don't discuss why it was called TRON. For those who know the history of computers (ref: IBM), there was a command that allowed you to trace how a program progressed as it was being executed - Trace On, abbreviated as the command TRON (and yes, there was a Trace Off - TROFF). So, TRON was the program that was tracing how the Master Control Program was running with an eye of finding a way the program could be interrupted.

Its a good *looking* movie...the story is kinda limp in my opinion tho.
I watched Tron for the first time about half a year ago and I really dug it. It was dated, but there was this sense of nostalgia (even though I had never seen it). Almost directly after that I rewatched Legacy for the first time since seeing it in theatres as a little lad. I really enjoyed Legacy, and was sad to see the franchise so dormant since.
Legacy is one of my favorite films of all time. We need a 4K transfer.
It’s crazy how how people are finally embracing what the 2010’s were. Movies like Avatar and Tron are finally getting the praise and recognition that they deserve!
Something interesting about Tron: Legacy was how Kosinski made camera moves that you can't really get in real life. I mean, you can get them, but they were deliberately mathematical and it's odd to see a camera stop on a dime. Or a crane that turns upside down. It's a stylistic choice that I think worked well for the movie. If you see Oblivion or Top Gun, he stuck to normal physics for camera movement.
"Tron features sights that no eye, no camera has ever before beheld". Time Magazine, 1982
Tron was an absolutely brilliant move that was far more than the sum of its parts. I truly love this film and it's been a stable of my comfort watching playlist ever since I first saw it.
Tron was experimental and Tron Legacy is the pinnacle of the aesthetics.
Legacy is a masterpiece on almost every level and it's wonderful to see it getting love again.
Nice analysis of TRON, and it's always important to talk about the music of both films -- stylistic standouts even today.
Tron: Legacy is my biggest inspiration for studying animation and game design in college. The fact that this movie came out when I was a kid and was inspired by it was nothing more than perfect timing for me. As we move into a Hollywood filled with Marvel films made by abused VFX artists, I still look back to this film as a glimpse to how VFX should be whether it’s for movies or even games. Also as a musician I also LOVED the soundtrack. I hope Daft Punk can come back for the third movie, since they broke up last year

Tron Legacy was amazing. The sound, the visuals, the story...
Say what you will about Tron, but with how they innovated CGI in the 80s, and how they innovated CGI faces/legacy sequels before it became popular, the Tron movies do a lot of innovating
Tron legacy is one of my favorite movies and I'm happy to hear that tron 3 has been great lived
I've loved this film and it's universe since the first time I saw it so many years ago. Still to this day I cannot understand why it's so underrated. Almost all of the visuals hold up better than the shit Disney has put out in the last two years.
I'm so sad that TRON 3 will only exist as a screenplay. At least we have the 1.5 TV show I have yet to watch.
Woah, a video essay on a relatively unimportant topic that isn't 4 hours long. How refreshing, thanks for keeping it concise.
I remember watching the original Tron as a kid in good old Disney Channel. Loved it. Truly revolutionary and totally undervalued film. Tron: Legacy was amazing too. Definitely a franchise that deserves to continue. I still hope we see a third Tron someday. We need this kind of "black sheep" movies, now more than ever.
I saw Tron Legacy as a kid and it’s never really left me. It’s just so cool looking that it fits in a similar place as Avatar (2009) for me. Movies people tend to dismiss, but are absolute visual brainrot for me. I had Legacy on dvd and at least once a year I’d get such an urge to watch it just to experience the grid, I didn’t have as easy access to Avatar and it’s length discouraged rewatches bc of my patience when I was little. I’m so glad Tron like Avatar is getting more content bc I just love the worlds in these movies

I remember my brain kinda melting when I first saw the teaser for Legacy on (I think) New Years' 2010. I was a teenager, but I had absolutely no experience with the property before, not even the light cycle game. So, we rented a DVD from the library, I laughed at some of the outdated effects, and then it became a special interest that became my whole life. Seeing the first real trailer in 3D in theaters really solidified it for me. I think I cheered aloud in that crowded room when I saw the updated Recognizer design for the first time. Every new thing I learned about it just flooded my veins with dopamine, and I couldn't get enough of it. I'm still disappointed that it lost the box office to Frikkin' Yogi Bear.

I was born in 82, and while I don't remember the first time I saw Tron. I've loved the movie and the idea of Tron, for as long as I can remember. I was so hyped when Legacy came out and blown away by (almost) all of the visual effects.
One of my all time favorite movies and one of the best sequels of all time
I can't help but to think it's an underrated movie on all grounds. Maybe except classic no-risk scenario which no one would have challenged it for anyway. Music is a masterclass, visuals are unequalled at the time and i still find myself coming back to Tron Legacy every years.
16:50 Funny, this is one thing that bugs me about Legacy. Despite the VFX glitches, the world of og Tron looks and feels truly *alien.* It's a place that could only exist in a computer, following very *un*realistic rules of existence. Legacy, by comparison, feels far too real and physical. It doesn't seem like a place made of electrons; it's more like a fancy Apple Store. The realism undercuts the worldbuilding. Like, easy example: in the original, there are a few points where you see rooms come into existence as people enter them, then fade out as people leave - clearly inspired by computer memory management. The same basic thing still happens with game worlds today. But the physical, solid sets of Legacy abandon that idea entirely, without replacing it with new ideas. The sets just look cool for the sake of looking cool, with no real concern for maintaining the idea that this is a fluid digital space.
Thank you thank you so much for making this video. I am now 54 years old I was 14 the year Tron was released. I can tell you I walked out of that movie theater and my head was spinning. As someone who is a massive Star Trek fan and loved Star Wars. I was hoping Tron might have the same future as those franchises. I kept thinking any year now will get a new Tron movie not. An In 2010 as 42-year-old grandfather we finally got a new Tron movie. Once again my mind was blown, I love the effects the acting. I know the deaging they used on Jeff Bridges doesn't look great, but it was in its infancy at that time. I am thrilled that you said they've announced a 3rd movie because I know I am not the only one out there that love Tron. I've been a lot of conventions and you will always spot a few Tron cosplayers. Anyway, thank you so much for this video
I have never actually seen any footage at all of the original tron but have played through Kingdom Hearts 2's tron level many times. Always been one of my favorite game levels aesthetically in any game. Feel like it did a really good job of capturing the look.
This was so great to watch. I must have watched Tron Legacy twice in the theaters back in 2010. My then 6 year old nephew made me bring him with him both times. I was beyond heartbroken when the sequel was cancelled. I still don't know how I feel about Jared being in the driver's seat for this film. In fact, I'm very worried.
You forgot "the game has changed". I love that track!
Both Trons are GOAT Disney live-action for me. Maybe I’m a psychedelia junkie. I would probably love Black Hole. I’ve only ever watched movies sober but the Trons and even show burns like Star Trek: The Motion Picture I find simply transcendent.
Tron Legacy is the movie that made me fall in love with movies and going to the movie theater and I'll never forget the first time I saw it when I was a kid
great video. I just watched the full making of Tron and feel this is a perfect condensed video of everything in the full documentary
Thanks for mentioning Wendy Carlos' score. Her stuff has sadly been out of print for so long, Tron aside, since it's owned by Disney. She's so overlooked even though she pretty much helped pioneer modern music
This is one of my most favorite movies. I don't have "the one best movie" like many of my friends but if I had to name a movie, Tron Legacy is always the first that comes to my mind.
I WATCHED the original tron movie late last year and I was in awe about how much effort went into everything on set. I was is utter disbelief how well it aged. Sure it's old and you ok now it, but I couldn't help but be amazed by the visuals
Fantastic video as always Matt. Would love to see a video with your take on Tomorrowland and some of Disney's other "failures" in the sci-fi realm. Always felt that good or bad, Disney's attempts at that genre were always very unique.
Always upvote just for using The Midnight

Oh Tron. Such a beautiful, underutilized franchise. I’m glad Disney is finally giving it some attention again.
that TRON arcade cabinet was a real center piece of arcades in the early 80s

Which is odd since the gameplay sucks ass
Thank you for making this video. It was an excellent watch.
Very cool to catch up on some Tron news, and I liked this retrospective. Good video - Thanks.
In the original, I always liked the slight flickering of the actors' faces. Felt like I was watching an old silent film like Metropolis but wrapped in digital outfits. Mixing the old with the new.
It was actually the appearance of the grid or space paranoids in Kingdom Hearts 2 that sparked my interest in Tron. One of my mom's friends who was visiting us at the time had a copy of Tron and let me watch it and I was instantly interested and fascinated with the world. And when Tron legacy came out I was there on opening weekend night. And currently I'm back on a tronkick. I've watched the original and Tron legacy twice already in the last few days and I even checked out Tron uprising on Disney Plus. I just can't get enough of this
tron legacy was really dope and I hope the franchise makes a comeback
I had very fond memories of Tron 1 and when i heard of Legacy I was so hyped for it. I watched it in IMAX and loved it. I was so sad when I heard that Tron 3 got canceled.
Thank you for putting this video together. Tron Legacy is one of my favorites. I listen to songs from the soundtrack on a weekly basis; as you said, it's one of the best scores, if not the best score, of all time. I really hope that Tron 3 makes it to theaters and that it is a success. (fingers crossed!)
I saw this in the theater when I was 8 years old, and this movie blew me away. I had all the toys (the ziptie powered lightcycles were awesome). Loved the arcade games. I wish my kids liked it a much as I did, but I can see why they don't. it's definitely slow and dated by today's standards, but it's still got a solid place in my heart and head.
Best Movie Ever! Great review of the series. Tron Legacy is one of my favorite movies too! This was a perfect run through Tron history.
Nice to see Tron legacy getting some love here. One of rhe more enriching movie experiences I've had. It spoke to me on many levels at that point of my life
