Trombone Extended Techniques - The Lip Trill and Scream

Музыка

Lip trills are a great way to increase your flexibility, and we can expand on the standard lip trill with some multiphonic screams in the high register. Albert Mangelsdorff and others have used this technique as a way to build tension during their solos.

Nice technique! Reminds me of some of the techniques used in 70s fusion. The super fast lip trill is still mind blowing though...I always wondered if it was daily practice or fast-twitch muscle related. After some years, I think mine won't get much faster. Thanks for sharing this.

Great video. What would be the easiest way to notate this combination of extended techniques on a score?

I'm not sure, but maybe notate as an F above the staff with a little "6" above it to indicate to play it in 6th position, then notate a smaller A note above with small text next to it that says "sing", then put a wavy glissando line trailing them off to the right with a note above the glissando that says something like "voice and tbn ascend with turbulent lip trill". If I saw that on a score, I'd have a good idea of what it should sound like. You can also check out the score for Sequenza V by Luciano Berio which is full of weird extended technique notations that might give you some ideas. Thanks for watching!

When one applies single position slurs, is the tongue positioned up towards the roof or curved down behind the bottom teeth?
