TROLLING FOR TROUT - DEXTER LAKE - Learning the basics of trolling for trout. We caught a bunch!

Спорт

My dad and I hit Dexter Lake to familiarize ourselves with the new boat. We are new to lake trolling, having been bank and river fishermen most of our lives. I used techniques I learned from SPILT MILT PRODUCTIONS KZread Channel, and they turned out to be deadly for trout. We caught a countless number of trout in a short window of fishing.

Thanks Tom! I’m slowly getting used to it. I finally got it up to the lower Willamette to fish for Chinook. but we didn’t have 1 take down. I will try again soon and hopefully get dad to go before the season is over.

Looked like everything functioned well as far as your boat goes. Those reels, not so much. Sounds like you have a replacement ready to go now. Some fat 'bows in amongst the kokes, too. Lots of action, it'll be fun for the family. Springers soon, I'm sure. It was good to see you and dad out fishing. Thanks for sharing!

The boat was great! I’m getting it figured out. Those reels were heading back later that afternoon. 😁 Total junk, what’s the chance of 2 of them failing at the same time on the second trip out. The new Lexa’s seem to be pretty nice and get better reviews. I have a few more items to get prepped, then next week I’ll be using the boat for springers. 🎣

Fun to watch you and dad learn your new boat and how to troll, all so new. I was wondering about adding a snubber to the troll rig? Your rig worked well catching trout without a snubber, but I’ve been told to use a snubber for Kokanee due to their soft mouths? Always learning! 😊

Good thought, I have some in that bag, but the guy I’ve been getting all the info from (Spilt Milt) doesn’t suggest one, so I went without.

That’s good to know! You could see how soft those Kokanee Black rods are, I like them! The reels were complete junk. I bought some Daiwa Lexa’s to try out, they seem way better. We’ll see this week. And regarding your previous comment, we were clearly learning on the go, it’s always fun to try new techniques! (I left in the learning curve.) I’ll wait and see if anyone notices I had the weight slider in the wrong spot on the port side rod. 😬 It was directly above the dodger instead of above the bead chain. Whoops! I noticed that while editing. I have it right now. 😉

Maybe try a snubber on one rig as an experiment. Yea, you’re a Vanford guy. LOL fingers crossed 🤞 on the Daiwa Lexa’s.

You might want to look into a tie bar (main to the kicker) and either an i-Troll or TrollSmarter type throttle control system. It’ll be a lot easier controlling the speed of the boat from the helm and with your eyes facing forward during more congested conditions (bumper boats). You won’t have to keep looking over your shoulder and working so hard! 😅

I’m a slow learner, I had a tie bar installed with my kicker. We used it last time on the Willy for springers, way easier! Thanks for taking the time to inform me, I appreciate any help I can get. I’m also trying to figure out an auto pilot system, I’m tapped out right now, so the tie bar will help for now.

@@RAGEFISHINGIt’s all good. That road side has a nice contour and weed bed that seems to hold a lot of trout. I’ve heard that a lot of walleye washed down from Lookout. I’ve been thinking about trying some “bottom walkers” with night crawlers and a smile blade but haven’t made it out yet.

Me too, they seemed to be closer to the dam. Dave sent me a screenshot of one of them saying it was a Kokanee, I wasn’t really paying attention at the time but it sure looks like it. When my buddy John and I fished it a few weeks prior, he caught a few little ones like that as well, but again, closer to the dam. I have heard of some bigger ones being caught this year, one closer to 20”!

Quick question….where did you get the rod straps? What are they called? The things that held your rod together like a rubber band. Just got a boat this week to do the exact thing you are doing. I love that you’re taking your dad out.

They are ‘rod butlers’, if you’re in Eugene they sell them at the Caddis Fly. I did a video last year with the rod ties and lure wraps which are also helpful to keep gear from bouncing around. Here’s the link. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKijraeDlNTNfqQ.htmlsi=xLaQ_wol06cch-Gk
