    Thank you! I was trying to check the wiring and needle in a different way and it didn't work. After seeing your video I found out it was the sender rod. You saved me several hours changing the wiring and the gas needle!!

    Good video, the only thing I would have done in addition would be to clean around the sender before it was removed. Murphy is my copilot and somehow the dirt would be in my tank.

    order you a reed switch on line measure the depth minus 1/2 inch of your tankthe mounting is standard 5 hole they read 33ohms full 240 ohms empty cost about $50 .00 money well spent easy to install very accurate

    I put a new sender in my gas tank it worked fine but now when I turn the key or the key moves around the gauge returns to empty or bounces back and forth to full and if I wiggle the key at the ignition it does the same moves from empty to full and Vice a versa

    Hello Wayne, I have watched your video and it has been really helpful for me to understand. I did have one question, on the video at minute 2:30 you use the black cable that you connect. What is the black cable from? Not sure what it is connected too! Thanks!!

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Nelly Tonchev It is just a test jumper lead with a alligator clip on each end. So basically I am just shorting the 2 wires with it. These test leads can be helpful for doing this type of thing. Thanks for the question and hope it helps.

    You buy a used 1973 jet boat, the tanks are rusted, you need new tanks and sending units. How do you test the gauge so you can get the correct sending unit with the correct ohms range? Some are reversed? 10 ohms Empty or 10 ohms Full? Some range from 0 ohms -90 ohms. You can see how I am a little stuck. Maybe get a Resistance Tool/Box to send different resistances to the gauge.

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    4 жыл бұрын

    You could get a variable resistor and use that as a test or test the old sender if there is enough left. Other than that I might try a standard unit and just return it if it does not work. Good luck

    @@Boatingzen I bought a variable resistance decade box used for teaching, tested the gauges. Turned out to be 20 Ohms difference in their accuracy. Oh well, the 2 gauges will be slightly different when full and empty. 10-210 & 30-230 Ohms

    Is there any sending units with just 1 wire? Mine looks like it just has 1 wire but then that makes me wonder if it needs a ground or if it is grounded?

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    Yes the other would be a ground

    my sending unit has two wires going to it red & black, per video instructions i connected the + & - terminals of the sending unit together & the fuel gage reacted. But by removing the resistance (sending unit) from the circuit and connecting the positive and negative terminals together, shouldn’t that cause a short?

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    6 жыл бұрын

    Although the wires may be red and black they both should be negative that they are both ground wires measuring the resistance in the ground. So yes it will cause a short in that the resistance is removed but you sort of did that already by connecting the 2 terminals of the sender. Hope that makes sense. You should also check with a meter first to make sure there is no voltage before shorting anything.

    Wayne Canning if I follow correctly looking in this circuit the current flow from + terminal on the battery through the ignition switch to the Gauge which is grounded. & the circuit ends there. There is no voltage running at the sender unit, it just there to produce variable resistance that’s read by the gauge. Am not sure if my understanding is correct but the good news following your instructions I replaced the sending unit & the gauge works now. 🤙🏽

    you are just testing with the short that test tells you gauge is working right it should fall back to empty when removing short do you have ohm meter --???get one at harbor freight if you can --- less than 10.00 we can teach you on line how to use it been using one most my adult life -built first meter about 1966 from a kit mail order.it worked several years it ads a new dimition to your testing

    @drakeParagon8 жыл бұрын

    Hi Wayne, Thanks for this really helpful video! I didn't know that you could test the gauge by connecting the two wires that go to the sending unit together. Great! We have 3 diesel tanks and 3 sending units, only 1 of which still works. I think all of it is original from when the boat was made 40 years ago. The sending units look exactly like the one you had in your diagram. Do you have any idea of where I might be able to order a new one?

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    8 жыл бұрын

    +DrakeParagon The sender in the diagram is a Moeller or Tempo sender. As mentioned in the video you do not have to replace with the same, there are better senders out there. I like the Wema like you see I use on my boat. I bought my replacement on EBay for around $25.00. All you really need to know is the depth of the tank the flanges and mounting holes should be the same as that is standard. The Wema is a 2 wire but if your old one is a single wire just connect one of the Wema wires to ground. Good luck and thanks for the comments.

    I’m sorry, good video, but why does everyone start diagnosing at the sender? Think simple, work from key to gauge to sender, then complete system is checked. Turn key on, check for power and ground at gauge, if good then ground out gauge on back, gauge should peg. If no power/ground, fix first. If gauge doesn’t peg gauge is bad. NOW go to sender, ground out with key on, if it pegs sender bad, if it doesn’t wiring to gauge is bad. There, simple complete system diagnosed. Again sorry, but there are more videos on KZread that they all start at the sender. And just for info, there are rare times the gauge will peg but still be bad. Retired 40 year marine tech.

    I agree it is good to start at the source, in this case I started at the other end, the source being the sender, as I knew I had power. The sender is often the most likely fault and easiest to do a quick check. A simple grounding of the sender wire at the sender will confirm the wiring and meter are good. Thanks for your input it will help others

  • @Boatingzen

    @Boatingzen

    There is likely a short to ground somewhere. If still on full with power off it is likely a bad meter.

    if you can pull the ender out the tank float may stuck on full ----- if you know the wire is good open wire conn at tank see if gauge goes to empty . if it doe s go ahead pull sender if you can repair ok. if not replace sender
