Triumph Trident 660 Review | Middle Weight Perfection!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I test ride and review the Triumph Trident 660, Triumph's middle weight naked motorcycle. With a 660cc triple engine and light weight features, is the Trident middle weight perfection?
In competition with the Yamaha MT07, Kawasaki Z650 and Suzuki SV650 is the Trident the best.

I was T-boned on my 2 day old street triple RS (my 3rd street triple) in September so while waiting for my replacement RS my dealership kindly lent me a Trident as a courtesy bike, I can't believe how good it is, great fun with super handling, Triumph have outdone themselves with the Trident, it belies its budget cost and feels like a bike at least £2,000 more expensive.

Nowadays I think there’s a lot to be said for mid sized bikes, in every respect. For a start you can use pretty much all that it’s got which you can’t with any +1000cc bike really.

I absolutely love my bike. So much so that every time I go to the dealer to look at street triple, I leave without switching. There's something about the trident that hits the happy medium between sports and cruiser. 660 is plenty for the roads I ride (mostly canyon) and what really gets me is the fit and finish of the bike compared to the MT07 (the other bike I was looking at). Add an exhaust to it and it's the perfect bike in my opinion. No plans of ever selling it.

Angus - love your videos and perspective on different bikes. Although I am in love with the Kawasaki Z900 RS and Triumph T120 or Speed Twin I ended up buying a 2019 Yamaha FJR1300 a couple of weeks ago as I needed something that can carry my wife and myself in reasonable comfort over long distances (I currently live in Canada although I was in the UK into my late 20's). I am hoping my son will get interested in something like a Trident 660 or Street Triple so I can borrow it for the days when I ride solo. . . .although now getting to the end of riding season in Canada so I will be getting my motorcycle "fixes" vicariously through UTube until around mid-March next year when the snow disappears and the weather is warm enough to ride.

Hi again Angus Like I said nearly a year ago it was watching you on your Speedmaster that I decided to go out and buy a 2022 model and I love it.. even got used to the red tank now as they didn't have a black one.. and now a year on I've decided I want a second bike as I don't like taking my Speedmaster out in bad weather to much chrome to corrode lol.. so after looking at many small to middle weight bikes.. I've decided on buying a 2023 Trident so I'll now have two Triumph's my Speedmaster for touring and long day trips and the Trident as my runaround.. I have watched many reviews and this bike is getting tons of positive feedback.. so I popped along to my local Triumph dealership in Chester and took one on a test ride.. not a nice day wet and cold but I enjoyed every moment.. the bike is so nimble you can throw it around like its a 250.. I am so happy I've found a 2nd bike it only took me a year to decide which one lol.. Anyway thanks for the vids.. Stay safe, stay positive and ride Safe.. 🏍....... 🤟😎

Great review. I have a 2023 matte Baja Orange version. The all black w/ the large logo was first choice but I did not feel like waiting longer than I already did which was 2 months. It looks like supply/availability is finally beginning to pick up a little. Actually the orange I ended up with looks pretty fantastic in person but I think it'd look even better if that orange was metallic with a clear coat. The black one reviewed here would look so much better imo if that radiator shroud was black. As is it's so dominant it's the first thing I see and frankly it's not that great a looking shape to be highlighted. If I had ended up with this color (or the matte black) I'd change that shroud to black first thing. I test rode one of these back to back w/ a Speed Twin 900 and loved both for different reasons but I really liked that I sat in this bike as opposed to on the Speed Twin 900. I really feel part of this bike. It's tall for me at 5'7" with short legs and just the balls of my feet touching the ground but as a newer rider it turned out not to be an issue as I feared it would. I choose the Trident for the engine including that great sound, the transmission, the clutch, the handling, the easy tip in, and that it holds a line well. I think the Tridents are easily the best looking and sounding middle weight nakeds. I also love the clock. Unlike my last bike that always reflected everything keeping me from being able read it, that has yet to be an issue with my Trident. A lot less helmet wind noise as well. I did find the Speed Twin 900 had more helmet/wind noise than the Trident. If I keep the Trident I may consider an exhaust and the quickshifter. Love the look of the Euro 5 SC Project exhaust but it's a huge chunk of change.

I think the Orange looks great and a good bold move from Triumph 👍 Think this Trident is a special bike and in terms of performance and ability, it trumps the Speed Twin 900. Plus I,ve had a twin cylinder bike for 3yrs, so this tripple appealed to me. So 2months on! Buyers remorse on my trident? Not a chance! As you covered in this vid, a great punchy little all-rounder. I owned a cb650r and street triple s, the latter I still have. Both of which I found better value for the money. I borrowed the trident when I had the first service. The trident did have a slipper clutch over the triple, but that was it. I felt the suspension and brakes are superior on the (admittedly discontinued triple s), more pull from the engine and just better allrounder. Of the cb650r and the trident I’d take the former, I just think it would be keep your satisfied longer, the trident is a bit small and moped feeling. I have moved to ninja 1000 sx after two years and that bike is just leagues above all the bikes I’ve tried up until now. Ps nice video!

@@chrisw4215 The suspension is poor quality. Its where Triumph have saved money. The standard shock cant be modded. The shock factory unit is top quality and perfect for the road. A lot of the harshness comes from the forks. Too much low speed compression damping means the front doesn't track the bumps well. An easy fix is to alter the preload spacer length in the right leg and fill with thinner oil. Make it more compliant. Suspension mods transform the bike. Check your static sag before you cut the spacer. You want around 25 to 30 mm at the front.

I want one desperately but here in Australia we only get a 47 hp version, apparently Triumph Aus don't think anyone other than new riders will want one. A ridiculous situation and a short sighted and frustrating decision but the bean counters rule the market, not the customers, but what I really want is one with a proper rear mudguard and a subframe visible and some chance of fitting up my older paniers and somewhere to strap a bag on the back. So, perhaps a grown up version , not retro like a bonnie but just a bit standard in its fittings and features.

Ahhh the Trident 🔱 It was either this or the MT07 and I ended up with the Yamaha simply for bonkers engine character. If it were based on looks alone.. Trident 660 every time. But my real question is- what does it Taste like? Another unnamed (cough, TAYM) won’t taste it for us and I feel like this would help us motorbike shoppers make the ultimate purchasing decision. Thanks in advance Red! 😊

Both brilliant bikes and yes the mt07 engine is great as well, lovely character and low down torque etc... I just really gelled with the Trident, just oozes quality and the perfect amount of power to have fun with. She is a peach of a bike in a very competitive market 👍 Cheers

5"5 would be able to flat foot? Honestly, after all the comparisons on every aspect of the competitions, the deciding factor for the trident 660 was the style and looks of the bike. Of all that I know and seen, I think it is fair to say that trident 660 is a tamed beast don't you think?

  • @redangrevival

    @redangrevival

I think yes just about! Not 100% sure though. I would personally have the Trident over the competition for many reasons, mainly including the quality triple engine. Absolutely it has been broken in and tamed! 👍

Is this a poor man's Street Triple? I think you would struggle to tour with this as the rear seat is pretty short and little in the way to mount bags, so credit card hotel small back pack touring only which would soon become a chore after several hours in the saddle especially with zero wind protection imho. So as you suggest a Tiger Sport 660 might be a better option. Have you ridden a Tuono 660? Really grotty weather Angus. Fair dos to yous for persevering..

I don't think it is the poor man's Street Triple, I really enjoyed riding it and the less power just makes it so much fun to play with. Very nice engine! Yes the Tiger 660 could be the answer. Excellent bike but the XSR700 is my favourite in this class. I really like the 660, though, and with a Triumph dealer in Chiang Rai, it would have been the sensible purchase. I don't like the cut-off rear-end. I like the dash. Overall it looks brilliant. Great handling, too.
