Sweet sounding lump that. Agree 100% around the use of silicone (or other sealants) on cork gaskets. This stuff peels off and can block passages and oil pump strainers causing untold issues. It also looks awful as it oozes out because people use so much of the damned stuff. If you struggle to keep a gasket in place on a job like this when you fit the cover, its fine to use a VERYTHIN smear of Vaseline or grease on the cover channel to keep the gasket in place as you fit it. Any excess on the outside means you have used too much, but can be easily wiped off. This is how main dealer mechanics did this in the glory days!
