Triumph Bonneville MOT (Annual Test) Day and a Potential New Bike?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I took the Bonneville for its MOT. For all the non Brits, an MOT is an annual test that all vehicles have to pass (a mixture of things such as brake, tyre, emissions etc etc checks), in order to be legally allowed on the road.
While at the garage, coincidentally, there’s a bike that catches my eye- an appreciating classic that I’ve had my eye on for a while.
And I show a motorcycle-specific camping solution, in the form of Wingman of The Road! This is something that's getting a lot of attention at the moment, so I'm really keen to try it out and see how it mounts to my Hepco and Becker rear luggage rack. Monika later has a great idea for a picnic with a motorbike!
I hope you enjoy it:)

Love your enthusiasm 😀👍🏻. Honda cub, £1800 not life changing amount of money for many and it’ll always sell again. I’ve got a Triumph Thunderbird Sport as my main bike but end use my Vespa GTS 300 just as much as it’s so much more relaxing to ride as I imagine the cub would be, plus you’ll get Monica into riding herself too. Win win. Have a safe journey and enjoy the sun Paddy 😉

Love the Vids! Please keep them coming. Freddie, I have a 71 Honda C70 cub and they are a pure hoot to ride and own. They are reliable and with just a bit of work even the 70cc can do 48-50mph ( 78-80kph) and deliver 80-120 miles per US gallon of petrol or 2.35 L/100km. My tank holds 1.2 USgal or 1.0 Impgal (4.5liter) Even the costs for tyres and odd parts are cheap and easy to find. I am an American living in the US with a passion for any old bikes from Europe. I regularly ride my C70 the 50 miles up and back to the office. As she is angle blue and white I get a lot of looks but I just keep smiling. I do love the Euro bikes as rides like the Velo or Commando etc. are just never seen on the roads here . So, I like the roads less traveled just to be different .. Enjoy Spain. Cheers Eric !

Had a Honda C90 cub for a few years back in the early 90s doing the London knowledge. I loved it. Also owned a Honda Blackbird at the same time but the Cub was great fun for pottering about on. Ridiculously reliable in its simplicity and so cheap to run. Keep an eye on the oil levels but with just 3 gears a twist and go it couldn’t be much easier to ride! Around 50 mph on a dual carriageway and it starts to get a bit scary. So light I Used to pick it up and move it about in the garage! Love the vids from a fellow Dual Irish/Brit biker. Tiger 1200 XRT now!

Another excellent video Freddie - thanks! A Honda Cub 50 was my first ever motorcycle. My dad bought it for me when I was 14 for use on some wasteland. I loved it like you love a first bike and it taught me so much about riding. That one they have for sale is a good price and you should snap it up. It'll be worth significantly more over the next few years as we get ever closer to the electric future. Here's an idea. Take it to Tenerife and you can put it in storage there for your next visit. Leave the trailer too? Then you still have your Bonneville here in the UK. The Cub will love being stored over there and the dry climate will give it even more longevity. It'll be a fine bike to tour the island on. Just about enough power and you'll be commited to a speed more appropriate for enjoying the scenery. 48k miles may seem a lot but they're such a simple motor. If it all goes wrong you could always fit one of the Chinese 125cc copies. I've heard of several people who have done this. Just one more thing. Pulling up at a petrol pump - to find every nozzle out of action? Yep, happens to me all the time 😂

You’re right about the weather, it’s been dry all day and now it’ starts raining just as I’m about to go out for a ride. Still had your video to watch 😀 Camping in the West Country in August you’re a brave man. It always rains. Not sure about the Cub. Absolute classic but nice ones are over £3k and you can get another Bonneville for that! I know they are supposed to be bomb proof but the one you were looking at has starship miles on it for such a small engine. That’s one to walk away from 🙂

I was intrigued to see that you had the Bonnie MOT'd at The Castlewood Garage in Bexleyheath as I used to take my old 70s and 80s Bonnys and Kwaka Zs there when it was known as Rapide Motorcyles. A lovely guy called Ken used to run the place and was always very friendly and helpful to us teens. Hi Freddie i had a honda anf125 which is the c90 with a 125cc engine. Cruise at 50mph 130mpg did 35k on mine before i sold it. It was immaculate even at 15yrs old. Rode it 365 days plastered it in acf 50 for the winter. I so miss mine. Had c90 before and the 125 would be better for two up and is identical bar the engine. Check one out. Mine was a carb the later ones were fuel injection. Never let me down and rode through ice and snow because was so manageable. I moved to an x max 250. Totalll reliable no chain to service, loads weather protection and excellent performance, commute or do distance. Highly recommend all of them

Loving your videos mate. I’ve been using WD40 as a protective spray for a few years now. Much cheaper than ACF or Scottoil protector. I found a 5 litre container on eBay that came with a plant sprayer type thing. Works out fair bit cheaper than the aerosols. Just be mindful of using wd40 around bearings eg. Wheels, headstock, swing arm etc as it’s a degreasant. Same with the power washer, as high pressure can wash grease out of bearings. Can’t wait until your next vid 👍

I did not know you could camp anywhere on the Moor, worth bearing in mind. Although you would have to watch the pony's! Lets hope we have a decent September. Oh, I personally would not buy that Cub, especially for that kind of money. It may look cute but it's gonna have issues at that age. Plenty of better smaller bikes/mopeds to spend £1800 on. For you Freddie because you give so much I thought I would too...50 cc Honda was my very first motorcycle experience in 1963 at 10 years old...No clutch to pull just let off the gas and foot shift...next bike several years later a Yamaha 80 with clutch lever my Bro rode along side me on the honda and told me when to shift the yamaha...In southern Calif out where Steve McQueen would ride in the desert...Next bike Honda 305 scrambler..next Husky 1969 , 390 ..2 stroke dirt bike front wheel most time in the air...lol..many trips off the bike some not bad some bad...dirt..mostly ..worse one I was drunk and lost the 305 on a wet night on a corner in our housing area..well did that same thing years later going to college...lol..but on a 90cc honda...Triumph Bonnie lots of good times at Avila Beach Calif and off on long rides to Utah and Arizona.....Big stripped old Goldwing..and a few others along the way......I guess the most dangerous well on a motorcycle not my old Jaguar car in the Vegas desert in the 1980's on a full moon when a big Rig decided to block my way in the Jag I was going along about 100 miles an hour looking at the full Moon with my headlights off trying to give Mr Lucas a charge when I look back at the road I see a parked big Rig in the slow lane in front of me...I hit the brakes and started to slide...sideways into a load of pipe...I was not going to be able to stop in time before hitting the back of the big Rig...so I lifted off the brakes and she got straight and I moved the steering wheel ever so lightly left then right as I went around that Rig at nearly the same 100 mph...I was so pissed off at him and myself.. Motorcycle close call was 2 big Rigs behind me one slow lane one fast lane on a steep downhill freeway pass rear tire blows out on the motorcycle right then doing 70 mph..I fishtailed around but did not drop it...would have been certain death ...and other events along my way...gun stuck my face several times by drunks..caught a heavy glass beer mug with my teeth by a drunk as he walked past my table at a bar that wanted to fight but not fair..Oh what a ride so far...lol..How I made it to 68 years old I will never know be 69 next month.. ...The Elite People world wide ...The Government...In any Country..Every Country as far as I know own all the land...Not the people...The people are only renters...lease holders...you will always be a renter...you can sell your space to another they don't own it.....Only the Elite rulers do....

I had a Super Cub, .......maybe that's the 90cc version I'm not sure. But yes, bomb-proof, always started up, and so easy to ride. Bought it off a scrap guy here in Japan for about US $70 So the numbers you mention make my eyes water ! However, what I want to say is that I put a pair of 'snow' tyres on it, (knobbly tyres) which made a huge difference off-roading it here on the mountain tracks, .........with all the gravel roads in Tennerife you might think to do the same, then it should climb anywhere.

If you can afford the Cub without getting rid of your other bikes, I would say get it. It's one of those bikes you can keep forever at little cost, run around town easy and have lots of fun on if you have the right frame of mind or expectations. I doubt it will go down in value anytime soon. The plus is that Monica is on board with it.

Those Cubs are so light and frisky they need a fair amount of attention riding them. I would say you Street Twin is easier to ride. I know what you mean though, those Cubs can be lots of fun and are bullet proof. Nice set up with the small car and a twin motorcycle. Ride safe.

freddie get a small battery leaf blower tie it on your bike when you go to the jet wash, blow it dry on the spot no wiping down water can't settle and cause rust works great. they do make one just for bikes but too much money and cord plugin only.

Hi l am always quite amazed at how people love small bikes, cubs and vespas. l have a 125cc Yamaha so l think l can relate to that. To be honest had it for about 6 years now bought off a friend who didnt get it new, other than a few issues where l dinged the foot controls due to these road barriers no major issues other than normal wear and tear. This bike could last another few years l reckon. To me it is is just a tool for getting from A to B. l cannot say l enjoy it, yes it is fun sometimes but l am always left wanting more power and especially since l had the chance to try one of my lucky friends many bikes. I have never been the same since then. You can imagine trying a Tracer 900 and a XSR 900 after always riding a 125. It will make your world spin. If resources and other factors permitted; here hard to get big capacity bikes, so most common 125 to 250. I would never own these small things, just pointless to me. However, your situation may be different so ... For me a bike is not only about commuting, its a bit of everything, stress reliever, tour machine, playtoy with friends and of course a prized asset. l am not sure most of these would apply to a Cub or Vespa. Anyway thats just my take on the issue.

Scooters and mopeds are common in Tenerife. Might be worth considering buying or renting one there, rather than loading up the trailer to capacity. A new cub is only twice the price of that second hand one, and they now have a disc brake up front if you wanted one when you return. Just an option.

Hi Freddie, Gary from the Toon. What a coincidence ....After 60 years chained to the wall in solitary confinement without a bed , no hot running water or any other of life's luxuries, I'm planning on escaping from "HMP Dartmoor" maximum security wing this very weekend. Who'd have thought!! As your in the area camping, Why don't we meet up and share your one man tent, drink some smoked whiskey (I'm not allowed matches) and maybe you could bring a couple of Greggs chicken bakes. I might even cadge a lift to Tenerife if that's ok with you and Monika. Adios

Thirty plus years ago I also had a Honda C90 while studying the knowledge, my biggest outlay was the tyres. It was fun (at times) but super reliable, except when in a very heavy downpour it would simply cut out. I payed less than £800 for it brand new in 1989, it was the last of the kick start variants.

We dont have MOT for bikes in Norway. But if you crash your bike and they find out that you bike has not been taking care of..like brakes, tires and so on. Insurance can and will give you a hard time and you will prob not get any insurance back. But most people who rides here do take care of their motorcycle.

I've no idea whether or not that Cub would be the right price for its age. I do know that on the Cubs back in the 70s, one issue was that in the UK, the mountings of the rear suspension to the pressed steel frame / mudguard were liable to be severely weakened by rust. If a thorough exam shows it's good and not just patched then that would be one thing off the checklist. You know your stuff I'm sure. Que tenga suerte ... as they say in Tenerife. SR

I totally understand getting an old Bonneville. I do *not* understand getting an old Cub - not to actually learn/enjoy riding! I'm into 'classic' machines, have ridden lots of scooters and I'm a fan of Honda and I still don't think I'd want an old Cub. Are they trendy now because Honda are bringing out a modern version? Also "motorcycle"? Doesn't a Cub count as an automatic, license-wise? No clutch? Surely you have to learn clutch control to get a geared license? Interesting loophole if that gets you a geared license! If not geared equivalent: Surely better a 5 year old Vespa 125 than a 30 year old Cub? (Same money and just as 'cool'?)
