To try different sanding blocks and see what you like best, files, scrap g10, metal, etc. Alee knives has a file made with golfball handles that I can say from experience reduces fatigue big time when doing dreaded hand sanding.

@@vickerja Yes, all good things. I've seen Airin's video on the golf balls and that's a great improvement. I get little numb areas on my fingers when I hold that steel block too long. lol

My two most important tips. Use the best sand paper/linnen you can get. The quality of the abrasive is more important than sticky or not. (Sticky paper is not a thing where I live - Germany). I stopped buying at the hardware stores, luckily I have an industrial supplier in my city that sells me top quality stuff. And surpise it not even that more expensive. Do not skip a grid. Don‘t go from 120 to 400. I have 80, 100 (rarely youse those), 120, 150, 180, 220, 240, 280, 320, 400, 600, 800 and 1000. I usually finish with 600 and never, ever make a mirror finish (I don‘t like it and are too lazy to make one). You might argue going from 220 to 320 might do. I think overall it saves time to go through the all the grids. There are times when I actully like handsanding. It can be contemplative and I got some of my best ideas while handsanding. Like: Zen and the handsanding of knives.

Great video Denis! Lots of good tips here and one that I will add to the list is if you really can't find any enjoyment with hand sanding, don't get into knife making!

All very good advice, there. There are no shortcuts to a silky smooth blade. And unless you’re a pro, you can afford the time. After seeing a number of knife-makers on KZread move from sandpaper to mold polishing stones, I bought a set from eBay. They range from 60-1200 grit. Trollsky did a video of him using them. His work is nice. Good luck with the new grinder, Denis. One day I’ll buy a 2x72! Cheers buddy 🇬🇧🙏🏻🇨🇦

I've heard a few people mention the stones but I've never really seen them except for Will Stelter mention them and he wasn't too impressed so I guess I discounted them since that. Maybe it wasn't a good brand. I'll have to check them out here. I'm anxiously awaiting the grinder! It's been 4 weeks but hopefully it will be here in a few days!

Will be using these tips hopefully soon.

Yup, me too! I actually don’t mind hand sanding. It’s just the first grit (220 usually) that takes a while. Once I start seeing good progress, it gets me excited.

@@TyrellKnifeworks Watched this again hoping I'd forgotten something that would make it go faster. Sigh. One thing I've started doing is wrapping sandpaper around a popsicle stick to get at the plunge lines; yes, it's wood, but it really makes it go faster. I have also learned to walk away when I think it's "good enough," because when I come back to it it's NEVER good enough, and needs more hand sanding. Sigh.

All the valid points bout the sand paper. Though I prefer drop of barricade oil for lub purposes, since I like to work with high carbon or "semi- steinless" material that tends to stain while finishing one side. Wish Dura flex would b available in eu.

I’ve never had an issue with windex when sanding one side and having the other side stain. Certainly with water. I just find the oil or WD40 a bit messy. 🤷‍♂️

@@TyrellKnifeworks I got stock of aogami super blue, that catches surface rust after only 15 min of sanding. However, I was using automotive window cleaner...prob different story with windex..dc53 stains as well when close to mirror finish, but it gets sorta discoloration not rust...Finnish UHC tend to catch it quickly as well. Anyhow, aogami was the reason I stopped using anything except birchwood's barricade..

Aluminum is great because most tube or bar stock is almost as crispy as CR steel. Dude, I hope you stick with this(I'm nobody but I watch a lot of youtube) You have the thing that I've seen other channels get big from... Thanks again for the great videos!

Thanks for the suggestion. Though I have zero interest in a Rambo dagger, you might see another type of dagger at some point in the future.

So if you come off the grinder at 80g you start hand sanding at 220g?

Usually I come off at 120, but yes occasionally I do come off at 80. In those cases I start at 120 paper. It depends.
