    Thanks for this honest series. Honestly, if someone with your expertise and experience has this much trouble with stainless damascus, I am less and less inclined to try it. Besides, you make such beautiful mosaic blades . . . and thanks to you, I make some OK ones.

    Hi, I've been following and enjoying this series from the start. It has been said that seeing your own mistakes is much harder than noticing other people's mistakes, with that said I'm no expert on stainless pattern-welded steel, the closest thing I've done close to it was a 304 stainless and a file as a core san-mai billet which turned out okay. I think the two things that might have failed you is the whiteout that you applied to stop the canister from forge-welding to the core sometimes I've heard it may travel to the other layers in the intense heat and hamper your core forge-welds. The other thing I'm thinking may not be the best idea is the powder metallurgy steel in the billet, while it is definitely possible to forge weld it, as you are aware yourself it's a finicky material with a very narrow forge-welding window, a bit too hot or too cold and it cracks... I think you will avoid a lot of trouble if you exclude the CPM154 next time around. Oh another thing, the argon canister is definitely very cool and convenient but not really necessary, I've watched a Russian Master Bladesmith forge-weld just about anything including Timascus,Cu-Mai,Mokume-Gane in a simple square tubing container welded shut with a tiny hole on one end and some motor oil added to burn off the oxygen, all done in a charcoal forge. Thank you for the attention and entertaining videos, wish you the best of luck with the next attempt!

    The titanium dioxide was not the problem. If I were to exclude the CPM154, then I’d have no pattern at all. These are the steels that successful smith working with stainless Damascus use. My problem was trying to go too quick. I should have waited to draw it out. Thanks for watching.

    Have you ever made a cast knife? Is that what its called? I mean when you fully melt the steel and pour it into a mold. Maybe that is hard to do in a home shop? Ive seen people cast copper and stuff, but maybe those melt at lower temperatures? I'm just a watcher, not a maker, and I'm curious.

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    You can’t actually “cast” steel into a knife/sword. That only happens in (poorly written) movies. There are a ton of science issues with this on cooling rates and the way steel flows. In reality, this only works for non-ferrous metals. Thanks for watching.

    Why don't you try with AEB-L steel core, at least for a lesson ? And damascus made out of softer steels like 0,8% carbon max ? It should be hard enought, maybe not at hard as your 1084 steel but not that far behind ( 13% chromium should add some hardness ). I'm not a smith, but it seems way easier to make. Ps: I'm actually not sure if AEB-L is 0,7% or 1% carbon so I'll just say I'd try with max 0,8% carbon stainless steel.

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    3 ай бұрын

    This is not related to carbon content. It’s the other alloys in the steel that make it hard to forge.
