Hey guys today i melt a heap of pewter pieces i got from my local Op Shop , These pewter pieces don't show up to often so when they do i grab them. I also melt some Sterling Silver bits & Lead that a sub sent in to me as well as making a huge Zinc coin. HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

And we’re back with another melt on another Friday. Pretty straightforward today As I melt down a heap of pewter pieces I found at an op shop over the last year as well as some subscriber sent scrap and other bits and pieces. Quite a few dollars in today’s melt which will add to the stacks value for sure. Definitely don’t forget to hit the 🔔 to be notified on next Friday’s melt as I get that big 1000LB motor melted down. I’ve bought my first melting forge cause of this channel. And it arrived in the mail. Now I don’t even know how to hook it up and set it to start melting. I’ve never felt so clueless. Hahaha. But I’m gonna give it a go to have some fun with my sons. I figure we can do some bonding with this. My son survived cancer. He doesn’t have much interest in things lately so I’m trying to bring him back around.

You remelted that sterling silver so many times that I forgot about the pewter and for a second was wondering what that was when you were sanding. It was like sterling silver Groundhog Day. 😂😐🥵 Can’t wait till next week!!!!

You can separate the copper from the sterling silver. Dont let the furnace reach 975°C. Do your pour and let it cool to room temp. You can separate the copper from there right at the pour because it will still be solid. Soft but still solid. Re-melt the silver and you are good to go. If you repeat the process 3 or 4 times you could actually end up with a pure sample.
I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever see you melt any Silver. Glad I caught this one. Hopefully, you'll melt more in the future!

I'm about 2 years in since I found your channel. Man, you have set me on a path that has changed my life forever. I just built my second mini mill, and I'm making patterns to cast parts for a 3rd. I've made tools, gifts, money, and machines, and I'm soon to turn it into a business of sorts. Thank you vastly from the other side, may you safely stick to your up-side down world, and never fall off of it lol.
As an HVAC guy who comes across scrap on a regular basis, watching these videos makes buying a forge really tempting
Fast forward eight months for the 2 mill. subscriber-special, in which the british crown jewels gets melted and cast into pirate coins. Gemstones are put back into the garden, while silk and sable fur goes into recycling. Also, I like the occasional episodes where you experiment with alloys.

I was wondering about that too. My original thought was that there just wasn’t very much of it, so there was less material to retain the heat. But the behavior being due to the properties of the material makes more sense.

Clear-coating the lead bar was a good idea, makes it much more safe to have around the house.

Mole Cricket or toe biter. What’s even crazier is if you pick them up with a thumb and forefinger either side of the big digging claws they have enough power to push your fingers apart. Love Australia.

Good thing you added the big Zinc coin to the total weight because of the 666 something was trying to posses your camera it seems 😈👍 Casting pewter and lead is so fast and easy to do, and looks like pouring a liquid mirror, stamping is also very easy :) I really like casting pewter in silicone molds, great details even in very small pieces, one of these days I'll get in to making custom silicone molds for casting pewter.
I liked the subtle hints for next weeks video when I was watching closely. That is quite the inner motor and amount of copper!
The precision and care you took to make that silver piece fit in the crucible was admirable 🤩

I love collecting gold and silver coins and as well as 10k 14k jewelry that I get melted into bars this channel has given me the confidence to buy a forge so I can make my own bars !!
This is how I have started my Friday every week for the last year and a half. Greetings from New Orleans.
Pro tip: use flux and completely cover the silver with it while melting, because silver takes a lot of gas like oxigen etc. While its molten and released it while cooling down. Thats why u have so many bubbles in there. Plus its better to get out of the crucible. Greeting from a goldsmith.
