Carlos Santana plays this with his thumb, hence my technique for this one, though I am wearing detachable nails to protect my existing nails (gives me the best of both worlds).
Yes, there is a cut. I completely messed up my solo so took the liberty of redoing just that bit as I liked the rest of it.
Lots of nuance and subtlety with this one. Spend lots of time with the various original and good cover versions out there to get ideas. I have tried to stick close to the score rather than add the variation on the original, though I have changed one of the unison bends to match what Carlos does. It's for exam purposes so stay close to the score.
The solo is the usual mixture of chord tones and scales. I am using the G major pentatonic and the G major/A dorian scale. The arpeggios are D major and Em. The descending octave line is a favourite of mine but was in the wrong place (clearly not my day) so rather than do it again I improvised the ending, just as you have to do in any live situation.
The outro line is a Bm arpeggio, or you can think of it as a Gmajor7.
There is quite a lot of fretting hand only playing going on. This is a useful tool as it can change the dynamic immediately.
