TRIMMING DRAFT HORSE RIGHT FRONT - RJF

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Trimming a saddle horse is one thing, or even a mule, all horses are unique, but all the nipping and rasping away is about doubled when you move to a bigger animal. This is just a trim job, but you get the idea.

Why do the big horses have a tendency to lean on you the most???😊

They don't need to lean on you, their foot and leg weighs plenty. They lean because they can.

You should try a good toeing steel knife on them hard feet chop out the bars and sole lots easier. Good rubber hammer and use the knife to hack out the surplus sole. Very popular in UK and Belgium France . Faster than what u think trimming

Allan Greenley, Have to look into that. I don't do a lot of these Drafts. What you're raised doing is always easiest. Have never been around that method. Thanks

@@RockinJFarrier hi. Yes I think if you tried a good toeing knife you'd find it is helpful onn hard feet . In Belgium they don't use hoof cutters much mainly the toe knife sharpened up..

Also. I'm just curious...why chop down the bars? I see those on drafts but not so much on my QH mare. Seems to me they would need that extra support structure w that huge body of theirs. But I'm a newbie and I know nothing.

You don't want them long. Like walking on something in your shoe. Thanks for watching

I have a Belgian draft and came to see how you do it. I'm a short woman and about 100 lbs overweight still. So yes, trimming a draft kicks yer rear. I can't hold my boys feet up for long and my hubs uses his man muscles and helps. I also don't have the hand strength to use the hoof knife and so on, but I try. I wind up "sawing" carefully with it. What has been a game changer for me is an oscillator tool with a sanding attachment on, the kind w little metal chunks embedded in it. About as rough as the file. I have Panzer put his foot on a 4 inch tall block, or a piece of 2 by 6, something to where the oscillator tool can hit wood instead of the concrete underneath. Then I go around his hoof edges and up and down to trim the length down and smooth down any chips or cracks or peeling away. He's unshod. Has had abscess issues this summer in both back feet. Anyways. The farrier comes but for the in between time that's what I do about once a week to keep him in fairly good shape. I sand a little on the bottoms and trim away frog overgrowth w the hoof knife.

Have you ever held up a 60lb hoof and trimmed 3/4" thick hoof walls without breathing hard. Like to see it.

I don't know how you respond to all these clowns? I wish these people that criticize every aspect of a trim would try it sometime. It's terrible on anything involving a stocks. My hats off to you I'm considerably younger than you and never smoked but trimming a draft horses free hand and you'd think I was having a stroke
