    What is a Trim

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    2 жыл бұрын

    Trim is a tab that exists as a tiny extension on your existing flight control surfaces. Think of them as miniature versions of the control surface. So you have an Elevator that helps you achieve pitch adjustments? Well, inside of your elevator is a little baby elevator. The baby elevator is your trim tab. The trim tab can be articulated up and down, irrespective of the main elevator. It is stiffly locked into position so that it doesn't flutter in the wind. Because the baby trim tab is sticking upwards or downwards off of the main elevator, it causes the main elevator to react to induced drag. So if the trim is sticking upwards, the main elevator feels that drag and must deflect downward to achieve balance. When the main elevator moves downward, the entire plane reacts and pitches downward with it. So trim is like a very smooth way to achieve long term smooth inputs and balance your plane to restore symmetry. If you are finding yourself having to hold the stick backward in order to stay level (if you let go of stick, plane would pitch down) you can either hold the stick there forever or you can "trim it out" and make the elevator stay where you want by adjusting the trim tab.

    In the simplest terms, trim is a way to cause the flight surfaces (ailerons, elevator, rudder) to hold a specific position so you don't have to hold that position with the controls. Its a little harder to understand from a sim perspective but in small planes like the trainers I flew for my license, the controls can require a reasonable amount of strength to hold in a given position over the span of a flight. One hour, two hours, climbs, descents and level flight at varying speeds would all require holding the controls at a certain position for prolonged periods of time. The controls "Get heavy". Trim allows you to set the position of the surfaces to the position they would be in if you continued to hold the controls there so it takes all the force off and you can often fly hands off but it changes with changes in speed and desired flight attitude.

    Just explain what each setting means so people can figure out what works for them. It’s cool to see what you do in any certain plane but what people really need is just a vocabulary lesson on what all the settings do and mean. So don’t say “don’t use this this is garbage” explain why you say what you say.

    Well thank you, very kindly. I'm glad that I was able to help. There is an updated version of this video floating around, which might be slightly more useful and goes into more detail. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/maGc286unrzbo9Y.htmlsi=3HbMzUbkquT9TpPr But if you've already got your questions answered, then you might not need the newer video. There are a ton of other subjects covered in the tutorial Playlist as well, linked here: kzread.info/head/PLviZUBinoAkxD-TsdstCtbCy0NH9GFjub&si=C0eAZhr4LjTWVqIt If you enjoy the way I present information, you may find some of those other subjects well suited to you. I try very hard to get straight to the point but also explain WHY things work the way they work. Instead of just saying "do this because this is the way I do it and it works." I always find, for me, that when I understand WHY something works... I'm more inclined to remember it. I also hate tutorials that have minutes of long intros and unnecessary self-promo or begging for likes/subs... people will like it if they like it... people will sub if they want to... everyone knows that those buttons exist, so shoving it down everyone's throats seems disingenuous and self-serving. So you won't find any of that crap in my videos. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to let me know how you felt. It is always wonderful to see people getting the help they need. Hey ! Your video's been especially useful as I've just discovered relative control for sim, and it's a game changer. I have one question though, my main kick out of war thunder is jets, and I noticed payload makes you **significantly** drop the nose, is there a way to save two presets of trims ? Or, if I do set it up payload-less, and then trim-up during my flight toward my target, will the reset trim key get me back to "flight test trim" instead of "factory trim" ? Btw your stream oozes chillness, which completly fits the vibes I got from sim battles, that one dude in the comments is right

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    Жыл бұрын

    Usually most jets come with a SAS (Stability Augmentation System) mode you can toggle. I recommend dampening for normal cruise, manual for dog fighting, and auto level for bombing runs. When using dampen or auto level, your trim is overridden by computer. Trim only works in manual mode. But to answer your question more directly: no, you cannot save two trims. However you can almost always adjust your elevator trim after you dump your bomb loads. Glad you enjoy the videos! o7

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    3 жыл бұрын

    That sort of cheesed flying is not really practically useful across different types of planes. At the end of the day, they are probably just binding a specific set of flight control inputs into a single key. A competent pilot can simply fly the plane. I imagine they have something like max left rudder, max left aileron, and max negative pitch all bound to one key. I doubt it's as extraordinarily useful as they might make it out to be.

    Dang I've been using auto, I got to figure out how to utilize radiator and prop pitch etc...

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    Жыл бұрын

    To be clear, you don't HAVE to learn how to do Manual Engine Controls (MEC) The times where MEC is beneficial are not all that common. Auto does a pretty decent job almost all the time, but certain places can squeeze out a bit more performance with manual help, such as cracking the radiatiors slightly more open before the engine gets too hot. MEC really comes into play when you've taken a lot of damage and need to get as much glide distance out of your plane as possible. Auto mode will feather your engine if that is available, but it won't reduce your radiators nor prop pitch. If your auto mode feathers for you, you don't have to reduce prop pitch, but Auto mode will always try to cool your engine (even if it is dead). So on MEC you can force the engine radiators closes even if the engine is piping hot, since you know there is no sense to cooling an engine you'll never get back anyway. Without feathering, your best bet to glide further is to drop your prop pitch to 0% which will be as close to feathered as you can get.

    You need to disable "relative control" in your trim settings. Double click elevator trim, use the options underneath. There is a setting that says "relative control" flip that around until the two options at the top that say max/min say increase/decrease. You also want to "keep value of disabled axis" if you have something bound to enable the axis for inputs. This may not be necessary if you don't have it set that way.

    Do you mean the mouse joystick border reference? That only shows when using mouse joystick mode. To make it disappear, you would need to use a console controller or a joystick. If you're already using those, then go to the control menu and change your mouse mode to view or none, that should make it disappear.

    Nah fuck this sim is hella complicated for some reason my trims are different every timewhen i want to change them

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    10 ай бұрын

    Trim is a non-stop endeavor. I am constantly changing my trims during flights as my airspeed changes. As your airspeed goes up, trim becomes more effective and you need to dial it back to accomplish the same effect as before. As your speed goes down, trim becomes less effective and you need to increase it to maintain. This video simply shows how to "pre-trim non-adjustable surfaces that you can have "locked in" during the fights. So you just pick a speed that you want everything to magically align and trim for that particular speed and orientation. That is why I trim for a cruise climb... because that is what I am almost always doing. If I'm not landing, taking off, or actively engaging in a fight... I'm cruise climbing. So my rudder/aileron trim will be slightly out of whack when I'm diving... but I only dive for a few seconds and can easily just adjust with my stick while I roll my elevator trim. Trim isn't all that complicated once you get the hang of it, it becomes another muscle memory. But it does take a bit of time and patience to acclimate to it. It isn't worth the effort for everyone, and if you choose to give up on Sim... all I can say is, thanks for giving it a try and we will always be glad to have you back if you ever decide to give it another go. Best of luck! o7

    @@WingalingDragon Thanks man, being on console and having Stick drift while trimming the plane with a Single stick is pretty hard but i guess i'll try once more.

  • @WingalingDragon

    @WingalingDragon

    10 ай бұрын

    @hyperhabu your stick is drifting? Like your console controller is dying? Or what do you mean exactly? If your stick is doing inputs without your consent because it is going bad, you may be able to reduce it by using a little bit of deadzone. Additionally, I was confused on one more thing you said. How are you Trimming exactly? Did you watch the console controller setup video that I have? You DO NOT want to use "trim aircraft" button (which is the default). If you're using that and becoming frustrated by it, I am not surprised. It is why I've spent so many years telling people not to use that function AT ALL. The only way you ever want to trim is to manually input each value on each surface one tiny notch at a time. Use the D-pad to control your trim and set it up so that each click of the D-pad adds or subtracts one % of trim for that surface. Up-D does -1% elevator Down-D does +1% elevator Right-D does +1% rudder Left-D does -1% rudder For the next part, you'll need a button combo. Something like the A, X, O, R3, or Triangle button... whichever works best for you. Button combo + Right D does +1% aileron Button combo + Left D does -1% aileron Using "trim aircraft" with a single press will try to attune ALL THREE trim surfaces to whatever those three surfaces current deflection values are. It is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to be accurate with it, which completely defeats the purpose of trim entirely. It isn't just you, it is just a terrible system that never should have existed in the game to begin with. It has confused thousands of people, which is why I am here to discuss it with you and help make you aware that... you're not bad at it... the system you're using is bad! If I'm off base on this and misunderstanding you, please elaborate a little further about what is going on and I'll see what I can do. But based on what you've described, my gut is telling me that the above method will resolve your issues.
