Triggered Precision Machine - Rifle Review - Aero Precision Solus / Proof Research / MDT Field Stock

Here's another rifle review, but this one is slightly different that the last. This rifle comes in at several hundred dollars less than the last two rifles you saw on the channel. All of the components for this build were hand selected to minimize cost and maximize versatility and accuracy. Although it is still not cheap by any means, you are getting "custom rifle" quality and performance at factory rifle cost.
If you are interested in this rifle or having one built using similar components, shoot me an email at Shawn@triggeredprecision.com
Specific information regarding this rifle will be added to my website (www.triggeredprecision.com) following the release of this video.
A couple things not covered in the video that are important:
- Rifle weight with no scope, magazine, or bipod is right at 8lbs 2oz.
- Rifle weight as seen in the video is 11lbs 2oz according to my scale.
- MDT polymer 3-round magazines were used when shooting this rifle.
I have a substantial supply of barrels, actions, triggers, stocks and chassis in the shop, ready to go!
Thanks everyone, keep the rifle orders coming in!
-TPM

    Very cool to see so many companies putting out these “custom” actions. Weatherby has the 307 coming out soon also, that should be right around the same price point. I like that the Aero can take the Savage pre-fits. With a go gauge, and a couple other tools, installation and head spacing is pretty straight forward.

    Agreed 100%. The action may be heavy and lack the pedigree of the bigger names but bolt action receivers are pretty simple, straight forward devices. It is truly refreshing to see a quality product that puts a full custom rifle build in the sights of a much larger group of people. With a SS pre-fit barrel, this rifle would ring up well under $2,000 and be a great way for someone to get started in long range shooting or even PRS / NRL Hunter matches.

    I have recently gotten into putting together my own semi custom rifles. Mostly because I’m OCD and I enjoy learning about this stuff and I am a tinkerer. So I first discovered MPA and their Curtis Axiom -barrel for $1350 which is an absolute steal. The action alone is around $1050-$1100 IF you can find one. Before I ordered it I discovered WTO and their switch lug. You screw on a barrel, tighten the torx screw to 30 in-lbs and shoot. So for $125 they added that. Recently I discovered this Solus line from Aero. The Axiom and Solus are very similar but the Solus has a few features I really like that the Axiom doesn’t. Integral pic rail which eliminates four screws, Savage AND Zermatt compatibility which gives you tons of prefit barrel options which the Axiom lacks. Another which is going to be a big money saver down the road is the interchangeable bolt heads. Additional bolts for more well known companies run $450 and up. I bought the barreled action $1150 but they said the barrel is lapped. So it’s a few hundred less than the Axiom with more features that I like. To be fair the Axiom has a roller tipped bolt which makes the lift effortless and the lugs are more robust than the Solus

    So far I've built three rifles on the Solus action and without exaggerating, everyone who gets there hands on these rifles is left speechless. The action is smooth and solid. I've had zero complaints so far.

    Shawn this stock with this Solus action & modestly priced 223 barrel and that Harrels tuner/brake on it will really bring out the best of this rifle. There are so many weekend shooters looking for this style and price of rifle. You need to be the sole distributer for the MDT Field Stock :) To truly show the benefits of the Harrels tuner/brake you need to show shooting before and after installation. The difference will be remarkable. Mine varied by at least 1/4"

    How are you lubing bolt? Gun oil such as Bore Tech or Slip 2000, etc? I was thinking about using a spray on dry film lubricant on bolt body and raceways, to avoid attracting dust. Thoughts? Thanks as always.

  • @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    I use Lucas gun oil on the bolt body and Lucas gun grease on the lugs. I've shot in a few matches where dust was a major issue and the bolt does get gritty by the end of the day, but I've never had it cause a malfunction. I do use Hornady One Shot Cleaner / Lube on my .22's, it seems to keep that nasty .22LR gunk from building up in the receiver, especially when shooting suppressed. I'd say go for it, but I would still run some sort of grease on the lugs to prevent any galling.

    Quick question- I just purchased a Solus and I’m a little confused on the barrel config. I watched this video and read the specs on aero website. Savage small shank or shouldered zermatt origin prefit. I want to run a proof research barrel, and I see on their website that they offer a Solus prefit. Having only found 1 dealer carrying that barrel makes me wonder if it’s a good idea, as the aero website doesn’t mention the proof barrels. I’m very new to bolt guns, and don’t want to spend $1,000 on the wrong fit. Have you heard anything about the proof Solus prefit? Or would just do what you did in the video and get the savage small shank proof prefit with barrel nut? Anyway, thank you.

  • @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    I've used both Savage small shank barrels and Proof Research pre-fit barrels. I'm not a fan of barrel nuts so in my opinion, the shouldered Proof Research pre-fit is the way to go. They work great, buy with confidence. You will need a barrel vise and the Solus action wrench to install the barrel though. If it makes it easier, I can source the parts for you and install them here in the shop to make sure the headspace is correct. Email me at Shawn@triggeredprecision.com I can also fit up any barrel blank you want with any short action mag or standard bolt face cartridge, if that interests you.

    Why buy this action over a Zermatt, Defiance, Bat…which are all made in USA

  • @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    @triggeredprecisionmachinellc

    Жыл бұрын

    Mostly for the price and features. The only action that even comes close to this it the American Rifle Company Coup De Grace. That is also an excellent action but you are going to wait a few months to get one. They retail at the same $899 price point. The Aero Precision Solus is made in the USA also; Lakewood, Washington to be exact. I love all three of those action manufacturers you mentioned, but none of them make an action at this price point, with this many desirable features. Personally, I would like to see more manufacturers doing what Aero and American Rifle Company have done, and introduce a more feature rich, less expensive action to the market. The fact that a Defiance Deviant Tac is approaching $1800 and 15 months of waiting is absurd and pricing many people out of the sport. Things are expensive these days, I get that, but Aero and American Rifle Co. prove it doesn't have to be THAT expensive, I guess. One thing a lot of people don't realize is you can have just a accurate of a rifle built on one of the two "budget" custom actions mentioned above as you can a top tier action that costs 2x more. Options are very nice to have! Great question, that is something a lot of people are probably wondering and something I should have addressed in the video. Cheers! -TPM
