Tricorn Hat with a Kilt? How far should history Inspo go?
A viewer told us “I am bringing the tricorn hat back with my kilts. People seem to like it. What are your thoughts?”
In all honesty, the lads don’t think it’s a good idea…or a good look. That is except perhaps in certain pop-cultural settings like a Renaissance fair, a pirate-theme event, etc. Sometimes historical elements can be combined with modern fashion to create something exciting. However, it’s also possible to try too hard - especially if combining two elements of dress that came form different contexts or cultures and have little in common.
We have no evidence of Scots ever wearing the tricorn hat with the kilt. Although this hat was a standard item in most of Europe in the 18th century, in the Highlands, the preference was for the bonnet. The Scottish bonnet, which eventually led to the modern military hat called the Balmoral, was a practical item. It could be used in any weather, was easy to make, could even do duty as a bag. Even as the Scots became essential units of the British military, their uniforms would include various head covers that simply looked better with the kit - feather bonnets, shakos and foraging caps, and the precursors of the Glengarry bonnet.

My pirate outfit (for renfaires and other events in that vein) includes a Utilikilt and a tricorne. I also regularly wear a leather Jacaru outback hat (with the croc teeth and everything) with my Utilikilt at work, and sometime just for walking around
I have seen this hat worn by a few people at some Highland Games!! It looked ok!!
+USAKiltsOfficial *Tricorn hats and Government-sett **_Feiladh mór_** were once common amongst commissioned officers in Scots' regiments o' the British Army.* The rank and file wore Balmoral caps. Thanks for the historian perspective.
tri's, are great when driving, as the back is great for auto headrests. i made two, 1 from an old cowboy hat, and the other, from an old trilby. both Stetsons. PS, my Docs are not traditional either. Cheers
You can wear anything with a kilt if you have the cutlass skills to back it up :)
It's definitely a fashion choice, not a historical or Celtic-culture thing. As with all fashion, the key is confidence: Anything you can wear with confidence, you can make work. Absent confidence, no fashion choice will really work. Though the lines of a tricorn seem awfully close to a cowboy hat to me, and the high horizontal lines of a tricorne seem ill suited to pairing with a kilt. That said, a tricorne with an American Heritage kilt could make a great outfit for Semiquincentennial events leading up to and during 2026.
To Tri-Corn or No TriCorn?? Good Flava Flav in Lederhosen .... Great Eric as the KILT Police.. . PRICELESS. 😂 What's in YOUR Sporran .?!
It’s like wearing a fedora with 80s clothing. Neon mesh shirt and booty hugger shorts. I mean you can do it, and some people wore fedoras in the 80s. But it wasn’t at the same time.
Bowler/derby hat with kilt?
I've worn my australian hat with my Kilt to shade my head from the sun
I personally wouldn't wear a tricorn hat with a kilt, and I would recommend *caution* for anyone considering it. Here are my reasons: 1. There's a fashion guideline that you should only wear *one statement piece* per outfit (at most). In every place that I go, the kilt is a statement piece, and a tricorn hat would be too. 2. I want my kilt outfits to look like clothing, not a costume. (Possible exceptions for Halloween, Renaissance Festival, etc.) It's hard enough to achieve that where I live, even if the rest of my outfit is contemporary. Even certain hats that were historical (which allegedly include bicorn hats and deerstalkers) still look like a costume if worn where I live. 3. If I'm wearing a costume, then I would consider a tricorn hat with a kilt.
Don't cross the streams.
Speaking of hats that don't look right... I hate the way Eric wears tams, with all the overhang towards the back and tilted way back on his forehead. It reminds me of guys who wear baseball caps backwards. If I were him I'd grow back the short cropped beard and wear the tam off to the right side and slightly forward. He'd look ten times more cavalier. I wonder if he'll ever see this?
I don't know of any contemporary artistic representations of a tricorn hat with a kilt. It's not historical. I'm not going to tell someone what they can and can't wear, but I think it would look stupid.
We'll never mock Scottish culture, but we'll mock the English and the Irish all we like lol.
No, just no.
