Trick vs DW Drive Shaft Comparison

Музыка

I bought a Trick replacement drive shaft for my DW 9002 Double Pedal and here are my initial reaction comparison. The DW Shaft is definitely the weak point in the pedal. If you have a DW pedal I suggest looking into this shaft. It doesn't come cheap but I find it is going to be a good investment.

I have an old model 9002, and I wanted to see exactly this comparison because I’ve also bent part of the linkage (which I replaced) and have noticed how quickly the left beater’s oscillation decays with the linkage attached. I am thinking in buying a new shaft and leave the otherone as a backup shaft. This Trick shaft looks so good, but I wonder what the exactle model is, just to be sure that will be compatible with my DW 9000 pedal. i know this video is old, but i just got done playing with my 9000's and was disappointed at my playing, i've had many pedals over the years and never had this much trouble with my 9000's. they have their own flaws trust me, not sure why everyone loves these pedals, as i write this the dw 9000 xf double bass pedals are $719 which is nucking futs, anyways... i was scanning drummerworld forums and someone recommended the trick driveshaft. so i punched it into youtube and this is the first video that popped up. needless to say i can't find a flaw in any of your tests and they represent real world results. you didn't press down harder on the beater when the trick was connected and you didn't change the spring tension so there's something to be said about the slop found in the dw 9000 driveshaft and others out there that cancel out the pendulum effect. your video shows a great representation of what a good driveshaft can do and how it can eliminate most of the "compensation" that one must perform when playing with a traditional driveshaft, i.e. better playing with better tolerances = less struggle and achieving higher performance. Trick you're welcome, this should help sell some driveshafts, now can you toss one my direction and i'll make a kick ass honest video review in exchange? :)

  • @thomasjameson5761
    @thomasjameson57617 жыл бұрын

    Good video, but why exactly should be surprised here that a heavier shaft would retain movement for longer? It has more weight to it and more centrifugal force, so of course it's going to be moving for a longer period. That being said, it does seem as though it is much more heavy duty. I too am disappointed in the design of DW's drive shaft (my original broke near the joint pretty early on, and a replacement is about $90). Before I open my second pair of DW 9000s, I will probably do an in-store comparison before buying them. Thanks for alerting me of this Trick Shaft.

  • @purpledc1

    Incorrect. The heavier drive shaft does not help keep the pedal moving. Adding more weight makes something harder to move. The only way the extra weight would be advantageous for keeping the pedal moving would be if it was placed in a position to have leverage to create centrifugal force. But the drive shaft placement and its design as well as the axis it rotates on lends nothing in the way of centrifugal force. The beater weight in this instance would be more likely to contribute. The real reason the trick drive shaft keeps the pedal going longer is because no energy is lost via the tricks superior bearing joints. When you have play in the joints, every cycle back and forth energy and momentum is lost as the pieces knock into each other. Solidify that area and the energy stays where you want it. in the beater and spring mech.

    But what im saying is that its negligible when you consider the mass at the end of a beater. A drive shaft rotating on its axis imho is barely contributing. Take it off ans swing it from one end sure. But that's not its natural path of motion on a kick pedal. @@Nefville

    Francisco Alvillar that's very true... but this shows that without even changing that the shaft makes a huge difference. Some people don't like to tight or to loose. And now the spring rates are the same still for the same feel left and right. But I do agree spring tension can make up for some bad shaft play.

    Yes spring tension has a role in the response but that's just one aspect of the adjusting of a pedal but its common drummer knowledge most of your slave pedal lag comes from the quality of the driveshaft. I own a new iron coba and used every possible spring tension possibly but the slave was tolerable but never just right until I put this trick shaft on and boom with no adjustments it was perfect balance! Felt like playing two high quality singles, worth every penny and it's the best upgrade for any double setup period.

    @@checkeredpast13 yes sr. The Trick retro driveshaft does wonders on any double pedal setup. That one upgrade makes any slave pedal respond equally to your main pedal. Since my last post I was using an older model iron cobra rolling glide but have since upgraded to the newest double speed cobra 910s but I ditched the factory drive shaft and used the trick and now my footwork is on a new level all around. The current setup I'm using is off the chain and I didn't break the bank. Love my new speed cobra's with the trick driveshaft, they feel like two singles no lie🔥 awesome setup for the money and that combination I'm using blows the 9000s out of the water. DW pedals are overhyped in my opinion because I've played them but naw it's my speed cobra's with the trick driveshaft all day over the other competition✌bud!!!

    @@checkeredpast13 hey bud also don't want you to think I was knocking your choice of pedal being you have the 9000s, they're great pedals but with a not so great price is my only problem with them! That's why I went speed cobra's and in my opinion they're faster than the 9000s if you have the trick driveshaft upgrade but I'm curious to hear about your experience with the 9000s with the trick upgrade because I haven't played a pair with that setup. I can say this the speed cobra's are at a great price point and once you add the trick driveshaft you're still coming out cheaper than a standard set of 9000s. There both great pedals though👍

    NathanDrums I’m with u on this, I play numerous hours every single day by myself and then rehearsals and practice and shows every week with my 2 bands and I have never forgot to tighten the lugs on my pedal. That’s pretty common sense to throw the rod and beaters on and not tighten. It’s second hand nature and instinct to automatically tighten down the nuts tight as possible. If your serious about ur music career and look at it as such and are professional about it, u check all your gear no matter what. tighten down every piece on every stand, pedals, throne, heads, sticks, everything. Here in bmore we only get 10-15 minute changeover between bands so I set all my shit up backstage when the band before us starts their set and have everything ready to go. If your opening that’s even more time to get ur stuff together with no rush from load in time until doors open which is usually couple hours in between with plenty of time to spare. I can understand shit happens and shit breaks but I’ve never forgotten to tighten something especially my pedals.
