Trick Names That Everyone Gets Wrong

Everyone? no. But, I've seen plenty of people get in arguments over the tricks I've listed in this video, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, arguing over trick names is pretty pedantic but some people are into that kind of thing. I used to be a real stickler but not so much these days. Either way, I think it's good to know why things are named the way they are and why they make sense.
So, what are some trick names that people mess up that gets on your nerves? For me, I am not a huge fan of saying "fakie full cab" or calling kickflip sex changes "disco flips".
As always, thank you for watching and I will see you next time! :)

Thank you so much for this! I know its pedantic to fuss over names, but some is really useful for getting over certain blocks when you have a diversity of ways to describe things and a debate about what things mean what. Especially when people have a framework mostly built by tv and games, it's good to talk on a deeper level about consensus. Really good work!

  • @alexwangombe8534

    @alexwangombe8534

    5 жыл бұрын

Oren Jury actually no, he’s right, and this tripped me up too when i first started skating, but the key to this is what he says at 4:39 - if you pause the clip in the middle of the trick, you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. So this also applies to the horizontal axis, not only the vertical one. In other words, if you pause the clip halfway through a fakie frontside tail, it will look nearly indistinguishable from a regular frontside tail, despite the fact that you approached the ledge backside. This is also true for lipslides as well - for example if you do a fakie front lip down a handrail, what you’re basically doing is a half-cab into a frontside lipslide, if you want to think of it that way. As for noseslides, i’ve seen it way more common to refer to it as a half-cab noseslide, or a fs half-cab nose, rather than calling it a fakie noseslide, which helps remove that ambiguity altogether. hope that makes sense!

@@alexwangombe8534 FS and BS tail-slides will look the same from a still image whether its fakie or regular so I'm struggling to see your logic. Unless your referring to the way he is sliding, in that case it is switched because its fakie just like on flat. Doing a fakie FS tail the way I'm saying means you are doing a fakie fs 180 into it. Also if you were to reverse a video of someone doing a FS tail it would be sliding the way I'm saying a fakie FS tail slides. Also if you look at this video you can see the video labeled fakie FS tail, he is doing the same motion as a bs tail. He pops up and then pushes his back foot behind him to lock onto the ledge. That's a bs tail.

There's a problem with hardflip and pressure frontside pressureflip I think also. Sometime peoplee call thier trick an hardflip when they dont use the frontfont to flip the board, but the board just flip by itself with the pressure, it's confusing. The impossible like you said in the video, one of the worse, even in great and popular competition of "SKATE" some commentator get the name wrong with it's a 360 shov-it they someime call it an impossible.

When I started skating I called hardflips "inward kickflips" or "inward flips" because I had a friend who could do inward heels, so my first time seeing a hardflip I just assumed it was called an inward kickflip because it was the opposite of an inward heel. It wasn't until I started skating with other people that I was roasted for it and subsequently corrected. I wonder if anyone else had the same misconception or if it was just me. Note that I started skating before the Tony Hawk video games so trick names weren't written out for me. I just named them based off of the tricks I actually knew the names of through word of mouth. There were other tricks I called by other names as well but hardflip/"inward kickflip" was probably the most misnamed.

I couldn't think if another way to word it. Lol.

@@adblack88 He's got it wrong. If you play the fakie trick backwards, it should look somewhat similar to the regular trick. FS/BS doesn't change. When jumping on to something, frontside means toeside and backside means heelside. When rotating, fs means your toes/front will point towards your landing after a 90 ° spin, bs means your heels/back will point towards the landing. When naming spins on vert/transition, imagine gravity doesn't exist and stick to the above rule. It doesn't get confusing before you get to the tricks that can only be done fs or bs. Indy's is a great example. FS Indy doesn't exist, they're strictly backside.

@@adblack88 People suck at taxonomy in general. We call tomatoes a vegetable but it's a fruit. The world revolves anyway. I'm just being pedantic. I've never been able to pull off a fakie bs ts anyway ;)

Double 360 flip and 360 double flip. I say the latter since the first one seems to indicate two 360 flips = a 720 double flip but so many people say double 360 flip. Just makes more sense imo to say the rotation of the trick first and then the amounts of flips and not the other way around.

my friends and i argue over half cab boards and fakie lipslides. would a fakie lipslide be coming at the rail fakie with your back towards it and popping a backside half cab and your back trucks go over like a lip into what looks like a boardslide and a half cab board being fakie facing the rail and half cabbing with only your front trucks going over into a boardslide? that seems right but it could be the other way around. any answers?

Ok, yes. They have a varial flip, a 360 flip, and other names, i don't remember all of the them. But when they are front side or backside the name is switched again. So what should I call it?

when i was younger my friends thought fs and bs referred to the direction you spun (clockwise/counterclockwise) and would always call my fs 180s bs 180s because we had different stances

If my back leads the spin i'ts backside, if my front leads the spin it's front side. no one can convince me otherwise.

Never heard anyone call it a bomb drop before. If I had to guess, maybe the name changed meaning because riding off of something doesn't really need a name and basically no one would consider it a trick. Acid drop is maybe just a catchier name than bomb drop so it took over.

Also, my homie is always like, 'Bro, did you see my backside tailslide?' and I'll be all, 'You got back tails now? That's sick!' Then he'll show me and it'll be a switch slappy frontside noseslide (more like nose stall, actually). Then I'll be, 'Uhm, that's not a backside tailslide, dude. That's a switch noseslide'. 'It is too a backside tailslide! I'm standing on my tail and going backside, ain't I?' And I'll be, 'Yeah, but it's how you get into it that matters'. I can't back tailslide either, but to illustrate my point I'll do a nollie back tail. 'See, if you nollie into it, it's a backside tailslide', I'll explain, 'but go in switch, even without popping your tail, it's a switch noseslide'. 'Fuck you, that's a nollie noseslide, not a back tail!' At that point, the pure joy of skating will have given way to the cranky one-upmanship of mediocre middle-aged skate bros, and we'll get into an argument about that and not want to skate together for a month. After which we'll start again, only to get into a very similar argument.

i've learned skateboarding from american skateboard channels, and my friends learned from Brazilian skateboard channels... and for that so, there is some changes at the trick names, like, Kickflip here is just Flip, the Shove it and Varial seems to be reversed on brazilian naming, the Boneless is the "shape breaker" we always have to discuss the trick as we play SKATE, some times it's funny, sometimes it's just annoying
