TRICK-CERATOPS? Were these dinosaurs wearing masks?
These dinosaurs may have weaponized the uncanny valley. I am burdened with the glorious purpose of bringing you the truth about dinos.

Tigers have eye spots on the backs of their ears; coincidentally peoples in India who live with tigers also wear masks on on the backs of their heads to help ward off tigers. The large, white ovals on the heads of orcas have also been hypothesized to function as eye spots.

Indeed! Folklore says tigers won´t even eat a person they've killed if they die with their eyes open- the tiger doesn´t like to be stared at, and will leave the corpse untouched. Whether true or not, I don´t know.

No I doubt it would've intimidated a T-rex. Rather, it could've agitated T-rexes instead since they'd presume it was a competitor. However, it likely could've worked against smaller predators like raptors since a Tyrannosaur's face from afar could've scared them away from a watering hole. Just one ceratopsian would have been enough to act as a scout to intimidate raptors for the ceratopsian herd to move into the watering hole afterwards. This theory would also hold weight if ceratopsians formed a circle around their juveniles against other predators, inclusive of the T-rex. A myriad of colours and "faces" would've been a horrifying sight for most predators, while a circular formation of horns could've made the ceratopsian herd akin to a circular phalanx for a T-rex or two.

Alas, we don´t know enough about their social structure, as far I know, but I definitely imagine them forming a wall or circle to protect the more vulnerable members of the herd. And even if they didn´t, a huge adult male, assuming the males were the bigger ones, may have been enough to keep most predators away!

@@hodarinundu Another point to look into in this theory would be variation. How varied were the patterns of their frills? I can certainly picture different sizes in patterns. Still, I find it harder to perceive ceratopsian juveniles hatching out with a rainbow of frill colours when their parents have predominantly green frills. That I think is something worth exploring since it could lead back to the idea of sexual dimorphism.

This is an interesting idea and is not far farce with large modern animals like Tigers have eye spots on the backs of their ears to avoid a surpass attack and the large, white ovals on the heads of orcas are believed to be a false eye to confused predators and they are colour blind so ceratopsians having mask frills to confused or intimidated tyrannosaur and that have amazing eye sight (except Tarbosaurus) and colour version so this is not out of the realm of possibility. Also love the unique frill designs.

I remember someone proposing that leptoceratops developed horns as a way to break off his shape and improve it's camuflage ... This would make ceratopsids sort of a trickster taxa like lepidoptera among insects :D
