Jaby I highly recommend you watch his film Kannathil Muthamitaal (A Peck on the Cheek). As a non-Indian myself it's possibly one the most poignant pieces of film I've encountered to come from India. The characters and their relationships built within the story really pluck the strings in your heart. At least it did for me. The screenplay and cinematography of the film will also forever be memorable to me.

Mani Sir's love for trains is evident in this one. 3. OK Kanmani (2015): Also a love story. Its fresh and very vibrant, it talks abt the pros and cons of a live-in relationship. 4. Roja (1992): It is all about Indian patriotism. 5. Thalapathi (1991): Its a story woven on the Indian epic, Mahabharata. All movies are different and all of them are fantastic.

His films are beyond stunning visuals, mesmerising music and the aesthetics they have. They are extremely layered and sometimes even Indians wouldn’t be able to decipher few layers which touch mythological characters. Nonetheless, it will be great exercise and experience to watch his films again and again to be able to see those layers and fall in love with those minute details (4 example, in CCV, even the designs of the furniture in different houses also have a purpose)

You gotta check out Nayagan ,it's a really really good movie. It's considered one of the best tamil films primarily cuz of the intruiging story line and screenplay. It does have quite a few elements from Marlon Brando's godfather, but it's a unique film regardless. You should seriously check it out and post a review.

@jaby koay First of all u do not need any other reason apart from Mani Ratnam to love the film. Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)(Tamil) will be my recommendation, it will not feel dated. Ravanan (Tamil) (2010) Based on Epic Ramayana but flips it on its head. Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004) (Tamil) Youth Politics, from view point of three different stratas of society OK Kanmani(2015) (Tamil) Its his best in recent times, a romance between two modern headed individuals. Guru (Hindi) (2007) The story of Businessman making it big in life. Its inspired by the life of Ambani( India's Richest Man) Nayagan(1987), Thalapathi(1991), Roja(1992), Bombay(1995), Iruvar(1997)(He himself considers this film to be his best), Dil Se (Hindi) (1998) are classics.

Please watch the movie "Dil Se" It is way ahead of its times. Its a masterpiece. You have to step into the shoes of each character and watch this, I am sure it will surprise you. No other directors have delved into such controversial issues at that time. SRK's and Manisha's portrayal of the seven stages of love mentioned in ancient Arabic literature. Hub (attraction), Uns (infatuation), Ishq (love), Akidat (trust), Ibadat (worship), Junooniyat (obsession and madness), and Maut (death) is out of this world. You will also get to listen to one of the best background scores ever!!

Out standing background score by ar rahman. Amazing visual story , one of the greatest musicals ever made in india with beautiful clashes of philosophies in it , ... It won 'net pac award' in barline film festival ...

Mani Ratnam introduced AR Rahman with a film called Roja. Start with that. It's a sweet and yet powerful movie about husband and wife set amongst terrorism and nationality. Then Kannathil Muthamittal. It's a story of a foster daughter who feels the need to find her parents in the Sri Lankan Civil War and how she realises her adopted parents are her true parents. Yuva / Aayudu Ezhudu - Same film made twice, once in Hindi and then in Telugu. I would suggest you to watch it in Tamil. A story of three youngsters from different walks of life and how they come together to change the politics of their region. To go o his older stuff... Dalapathi - This is where you see Rajni the actor. Another Malayalam star called Mammooty also acts in this movie. Its about brotherhood vs reality of life and is inspired from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Naayakan - a masterpiece of a film on the Tamil gangster Velu Naikar in Mumbai of 80's. Starring Kamal Hassan

One of shahrukh's best performance was dil se. Many directors don't know how to use him. Nayagan - equivalent to godfather in india. You guys should definitely check it out. Roja - coz it was Rahman's first movie and till date Mani sir only works with him. Iruvar - For the technical aspects.. there's nothing like this made in india..this was Mani sir's best work Alaipayuthe - Most of the love Stories in indian movies end with the wedding of the lovers. This one shows what happens afterwards. Also R Madhavan's debut movie. All the others are good too. But these definitely you should check out

Mani Ratnam - Santosh Sivan (cinematographer) - AR Rahman (music) is the best team in Indian history, extremely cohesive, and they do their best work with eachother. And they are South Indian. A movie to recommend would be Raavan, because its a stunning, beautifully crafted, failure, with genius and heart poured into every frame.
