Ustad Rais was born in 1939 in Indore, India in a family of musicians. He belonged to the Mewati Gharana of Indian classical music. His maternal grandfather Inayat Ali Khan was also considered one of the finest sitar players in the subcontinent.
He learned music from his uncle, Valayat Ali Khan and father Muhammad Khan. Rais Khan gave his first performance at the age of 5 in Bombay's Sunder Bi Hall. The performance was attended by the governor and `maharaja of India, who appreciated the his talent.
Subsequently, he per formed on important occasions and had his first foreign tour to Poland. He traveled around the world and in 1963 he visited Pakistan for his maiden performance in Karachi. He met Balqees Begum in 1979 and the following year they tied the knot.
(He played the sitar in almost every song for Madan Mohanji between 1964 and 1973) .

in one of Khayyam's interview. He said he had to wait for months to record a song with Ustad Raees Khan for the film Aakhri Khat. Somewhere read, Raees Khan Sahab composed for Marathi songs too. The crying shame was, on his death Pakistan did not even bother to highlight his farewell in a manner fitting this Legend's stature and life. In the song from Hansthe Zakhm - Aaj Soncha tho Aansoo Bhar Aaye. in the last stanza, He made the Sitar sound literally crying . Rarely such talents are born.

He himself moved to Pakistan where he hardly had any listeners of pure classical music. He kept coming to India to perform in concerts.

As a friend of Shri Madanji,I had witnessed the great musical unerring between both, and Raiskhan with fantastic hand on Sitar, helped Madanji to create many great composition with him. Both were compensating each other masterly. Raiskhan never took any money from Madanji, but later on because of his superiority complex Rsiskhan and his arrogant behavior, separated from him. But both of them greatest songs to hindi films. Tribute to my both friends. I missed them and creativity.Raiskhan was a legend and gift by God to Hindustani Classical music. No one like be born again, like his handbon Sitar. Tribute to my friend him.
