Tribes Ascend: The Rise and Fall of The Worlds Fastest Shooter | Death of A Genre

Looks like Hirez is trying to make a new Tribes game in the "Battle Royal" style of game.
smitedatamining.com/hi-rezs-tr... I hope they are they are the type of people to learn their lesson from their first attempt with the series.

Ascend is one of the greatest tragedies I've experienced in gaming... It started out so promising, and for a few months accounted for some of my favorite gaming moments of all time, and then it slowly became clear that the developers simply had no idea what they were doing... I hope someone, Midair or anyone else (Midair's reviews aren't looking great right now), manages to pick the torch back up. Tribes is a series that deserves to have a modern representation close at hand, whether it's official or or not, as long as it's done right. Like Ascend wasn't...

Roxfox a ton of players complained at the beginning because it was too hard to get the flag as you had to first destroy the generator but imo that was part of the fun and got everyone, all skill levels involved. Yes it was freaking hard but it gave the generator more meaning and tried to get teamwork going, as sometimes the generator might only be down for a few seconds so timing was needed. When they got rid of having to destroy the gen for the flag it didn't exactly kill the game but there were too many players that would rather just play deathmatch in the middle doing absolutely nothing to defend the flag and not caring if their team wins or looses, whereas before when they had the generator up for the flag there could have been something for these players to do to help rather then sit in the middle doing nothing. Also there were a ton of moaning peeps in this game which turned off many too. IMO the learning curve turned off many but also the playerbase that took the time to learn were not all so forgiving to new players which turned off many too.

Ascend was shit. It basically took all the things that made tribes 1 and 2 so great, and either removed them or did them in a shittier fashion (think skiing). If there's a reboot of the series, it better be damn faithful to the originals.

mhotl there is a free to play new (ish) FPSZ called Midair which is like Tribes 1 and 2 but unfortunately was dead on release and similar to Ascend you might only see max 30 players playing. (And I even paid to play it early. lol) Though I know there was a few that didn't like Ascend but I loved it because it was so fast and easy to manoeuvre and look freaking cool. (At least for me. 😂)

@@BlGGESTBROTHER I don't even need it to be "faithful" to the originals.. It needs to take the CORE of what made Tribes 1 and 2 good and do those things. 1) Movement: jumping, jetting, and skiing all need to feel fluid and work well. T:A wasn't absolutely terrible with skiing.. but their collision system and maps sucked so the skiing suffered. 2) Counterplay: In a 1vs1 fight, you should be able to have an intense duel with no bullshit one hit kills or easily aimed hitscan/high rof+high projectile speed death. Tribes shouldn't have snipers that can 1 shot you, "spinfusors" that can one shot you, grenade launchers that can one shot you, or hitscan/high rof+speed machine guns that can kill you regardless of how you're moving. This makes a duel feel more like COD/battlefield with jetpacks than like Tribes. Tribes duels were all about positioning, leading/predicting your opponent, and energy management.. trying to get them to touch down before you. 3) Bases: Bases need to matter.. they need to have things that you care about and actually be worth infiltrating and defending. 4) Deployables/Building: Related to bases.. but you need to be able deploy/build structures and tools. Turrets, inventory stations, shields, walls, traps, generators, ect... not all of these options were available in base Tribes (though many were) to be fair.. but even in base Tribes, you could bolster your defenses and it was valuable to defend your base. 5) Map size and Design: COME ON this is obvious... Tribes is all about fluid movement and having epic battles in the skies and on the ground over a massive rolling terrain. All maps should be fairly large to huge and feature rolling terrain to enable skiing. All games after T2 have failed this except maybe Fallen Empire: Legions. 6) Customization: T1 and T2 didn't have a TON of customization for your loadout.. but it was a core thing that the game tried to have. It was designed based on mech games after all (the starsiege universe is mostly mech games). This is something that all games past T2 fail completely at. They either have no customization or such limited customization that it's less than base Starsiege: Tribes even had. I honestly don't care if the physics of jet packing or skiing are extremely close to T1.. just that they're fluid and a main part of the game and that you don't get fucked over for skiing around the map by 1 shot kills from across the map. What's the point of floating around in the air when everyone is running around with sniper rifles that can instantly kill you from insane distances with no interaction? They just need line of sight. Floating around gives free line of sight. I also care that when I duel someone, that the duels feel engaging like they did in T1. I also care that the bases and maps make me feel like the objectives matter and it's not just a race to cap flags.. but a battle for the ability to get in and out of the enemy base while fighting to prevent them from having the same access to yours.

The amount of hackers in the game was outrageous. That was a huge reason it got so much worse too. And nothing was ever done about them so they just kept piling up and making the game unplayable. Especially for new people. I got sick of being chain gunned from across the entire map and every single shot hit me no matter where I was or how fast I was moving. If your pinky was visible from a mile away you were getting shot non stop. It was obvious they could see through walls to with a wall hack. And any other number of hacks. Seriously it got to insane levels of ridiculous. But never once was the hacking addressed. I loved the game but it got to be to unbearable. If we tried to talk about the bad hacking problem on the official forums they would just delete the thread. You weren't even allowed to talk about it. Also they then released some new grenade that made it impossible to defend against. One of those dropped into the gen room and all of your defense was gone, and you're like blinded and helpless, and the enemy just walks in. What the heck were they thinking. Guess they wanted to make it easy to take out generators, but some of us loved defense, but that aspect was totally ruined too and worthless after that. No point in even trying to defend anything with any kind of tactics.

I am a software engineer today thanks to Starsiege Tribes, oh man those scripts seemed so hard at the time. Fun times. The best thing about this game series has also been the worst thing, and that is the ridiculous skill ceiling. This is the only game where 3 players could destroy 20 players. It's purely skill based and after years you are still getting better. But it's hell for new players who will be utterly lost.

Played Tribes 2 for years. There weren't that many games at the time that offered multi-crew vehicles. I used to play mostly as a scout, deploying remote radar beacons and warning the team of flag rushes. Never got good at laser, but spinfusor was totally my thing. I remember showing this game to a friend for the first time, who hasn't seen such style of gameplay and it was inconceivable to him, how good everyone was at predicting trajectories mid air. Due to the delayed nature of the spinfusor disc, it was perfect for annoying enemy snipers, as it allowed you to fire and hide before the projectile hit, leaving the target to wonder where you were. Best moments in the game are of riding the tail of the transport and designating targets for juggernaught mortars. Music was great and is forever embedded in my memory, as well as command chat hotkeys. VGCG!

Singular focus on Cap, Chase, HoF, etc. Base rape, deployable farming, superfluous vehicle battles, anything that gave avg players something to do in the older titles were minimized or eliminated. The generator didn't really matter, things like that. We ended up with a game that only the above avg skill level or pickup players can enjoy. Looking at Mid Air, last time I checked on it in 2017, I heard the 10 people that played it locked themselves in a single server to keep out the bads.

I've been around since the OG Tribes, was part of a dedicated group of Tribes players who exclusively played the Tribes:Demo mainly due to its smaller tighter knit community, and basically was stuck on that version of tribes forever. I actually enjoyed Tribes: Vengance, its attempt at creating a single player campaign, but never played its online battles. I attempted to play "Legends", an open source game that never really left beta and its even tinier community. I miss FPS+z. the moments....man some of the rare moments stick with me, like this one epic midair grenade launcher kill in the OG tribes that won us a CTF match.... {YDG}Cruiser/{PAC}Muad'Dib, FunnyFarmer as well there were a few other clans I joined briefly, but I still had fun. mostly in Pub servers.

I've been lucky enough to play every single entry in the Tribes series, even though I never played them very much. I remember seeing the original Starsiege Tribes in it's oddly long box for sale at just eight bucks. I remember some friends of mine getting really excited for Tribes 2, and playing it with them a little bit. I bought Aerial Assault because I was eager for something I could play online on my PS2, and while it was just a water-downed Tribes 2 where it was hard to communicate with teammates, I still loved playing that game and probably played it more than any other online PS2 game. I saw Tribes Vengeance for sale at a Big Lots of all places; (this series always tends to appear like a budget title.) I loved it so much I bought a second copy for my brother so we could do multiplayer. It's probably my favorite in the series just because I'm more into single player than multiplayer. And I got to play Tribes Ascend when it was still young. Got my *** handed back to me in a couple matches, but never had the time to actually get good. Never found out that it died till years after. I still feel really bad that it didn't go very far before they pulled the plug. Despite the fact that I played so very little of (most) of these games, and certainly never got good at any of them, I still could tell there was something particularly fun about these games, something that always made them stick in my mind. If I saw them making a new title in the series, I'd probably hop on board without a second thought. I'd still suck at it, and would barely play it, but I'm pretty confident that I'd have a great time anyway.

I always appreciate Tribes: Ascend coverage, but this missed a lot of important beats in the game's history. They didn't *completely* abandon it after Smite came out, and Hi-Rez helped turn its image around on /r/Tribes when the Out Of The Blue update hit. It's still a sad story, but I feel like there isn't a lesson to be learned from this if you don't talk about those last few updates and the death of the eSports community.

It's true that they made a few updates after they released smite but it wasn't for literally years later that we got "out of the Blue" and by that time the game and community was nearly dead. I felt like it wasn't worth putting in due to it not having a long lasting effect on the game and done after the developers decided to drop the game for others.

I understand your meaning, but you simply cannot just decide that two major game-changing updates don't deserve to be talked about. Honestly, "our attempts to revive it failed" is much more telling/compelling than "they just left it to die," especially since this video also could've served as an advertisement for more people to get into Tribes - the servers I traffic have seen some new players since this video dropped.

  • @sentry4944

    @sentry4944

They left it to die and as it was breathing its last breath, they tried to revive it. It would have been better off not having the Blue update. T:A 1.0 was a joke of a release. Hirez fucked the community around many times over. There was the tournament that they were supposed to give gold as a prize that never got awarded, the game changing patch that happened the day before a major tournament, deleting their player forums and making /r/Tribes the "official forums", etc. And then they released the paid GOTY edition that unlocked everything as one last money grab. I started playing the game in the closed beta and played basically until the Blue patch came out. Once they saw that they couldn't make a ton of money off of it and the playerbase was a bunch of nostalgic players looking for Tribes HD, they put their money on Smite. We had less than a handful of patches after the 1.0 release. The game client we had for years should have never made it out of beta.

Nobody is going to talk about what really killed Tribes Ascend or at least the last 100 players was the centralization of the servers and the inability to kick hackers like "Solly" due to the hirez abandonment. If hirez had simply allowed us to host our own servers like in the previous games, it would probably still be alive today. Also my favorite part of Tribes/Tribes2 was all the modifications, custom weapons, and custom maps people could add on their own server, and the limitless amount of deployable base items. I did alot of mod coding and map building. HiRez completely stripped out these core parts of what made Tribes what it was and left it as a hollow shell that was all about skiing and capping flags.

Everything Hi-Rez has ever done has been ruined by bad decision-making and what sure seems like a complete lack of a concise design focus going in. Global Agenda had the potential to be pretty amazing - in many respects it was ahead of its time - but they ruined by trying to force in WoW-like open world questing elements to it instead of focusing on the little "dungeons" and PvP that made it interesting. Tribes: Ascend was a mess almost from the start. They didn't know how to make an actual Tribes game (maybe they'd never played it before?) and argued fiercely with the Tribes veterans that, admittedly, were rather hard to please. The game initially launched with automatic, high-capacity hitscan weapons which, for a game like Tribes is... a bad idea. The LMG quickly became the best weapon in the game and trivialized most gameplay. They eventually fixed this by making it a projectile weapon that fired fast (but not hitscan) bullets and MOST people seemed to be happy with this. The real problems came from the apparently random decision to go F2P, and all of the grind-focused gameplay elements that came with it. Tribes was always about picking an armor class and then selecting the goodies you use with it, but Hi-Rez needed ways to "encourage" players to buy their stuff, so they broke it up into discrete classes that you had to grind or pay to unlock, and then doubled down on this retardation by, as the video states, adding in weapons and items that were simply superior versions of the free ones. SMITE also apparently went belly-up not too long after launch. Hi-Rez is just a good example of incompetence in action. They were technically proficient and certainly had some good ideas (like I said, Global Agenda was definitely years ahead of its time), but they clearly lacked people with the experience to make good high-level plans and focus their teams.

Hi-Rez said they took inspiration from TF2 while making Paladins (even tho they stole half of the heroes from Overwatch) so I think it might have been the same case for T:A. They thought that 9 dudes from TF2 is more interesting idea so they turned light, medium and heavy into 3/3/3 of those classes and I think it was better. Unfortunately they decided to turn it back into original class system so loadout building got complicated and the classes lost their charm.

We got Tribes 3: Rivals from a spinoff hirez studio as well as a redo of Midair (now Midair 2), both in "early access". Learning Tribes 2 was extremely difficult but super fun! I remember they had to give me an in-game tutorial. The learning curve was massive. Couldn't get my friends into it, but then we all played Tribes Ascend for a while before facing the issues mentioned in this video. Now I play Overwatch, and I like playing champions with high mobility like Ball and Pharah. I know Blizzard is shitty now and Riot is the cool kid now, but Valorant just doesn't even compared to the kind of FPS I like to play. Overwatch isn't perfect, but it's still the most mainstream, fast-paced, FPS-Z shooter in my mind.

I couldn't play it because I had accidentally installed malware onto the lap top but I'm building a PC soon that should be able to play games like this on ten different tabs. I'm so glad I rediscovered this masterpiece of a game.
