Luke over at the MIgardener channel asked if I'd be interested in trying out his own organic fertilizer mix. I said yes, so now we are putting it to the test.
The test is basic enough. 4 containers, all used for plantings over 2 seasons without having ever been amended.
2 containers will have the fertilizer added to them, 2 will not.
All will be planted with Snowcap Beans.
Which beans will come out healthier and be more productive?
Time will tell!

    Jared, your test was totally fine :) Don't sweat it! It looks like a lot, however part of the reason you add that much is because you don't want to have to come in and reapply more. As a gardener I hate re-fertilizing part way through the season, and by adding that much right off the bat, you won't have to. The square foot application is for rows and for direct seeding, it always looks like more in containers, but it does truly go a long way. When we use it on our garden, we are able to plant about 30 tomatoes with just 3 pounds of Trifecta.

Nobody will be knocking on my door, and I have 12 different 50 pound bags of raw materials in my garage... so I would be hard pressed for anyone to think I am repackaging. >_< thanks for the laugh though. Maybe it's just me but that seems like a pretty normal amount for organic fertilizer? I'm used to Dr. Earth products which I think are pretty similar amounts. Maybe a little less but Luke's product isn't just pure fertilizer it has other things in it as well, so I can see needing abut more.

    Double Dog Farm ~ Shoestring Gardening on a KISS Principle agreed. I do subscribe to Luke's channel and I purchase things from his seed store; however, this isn't really a fair experiment to just try it in depleted soil. I'm not saying that Trifecta doesn't work, in fact, I can think of many uses for it. J&J Acres In my humble opinion, the test would be a lot more fair if you used an organic potting mix that hasn't been used. Sorry if this seems anal. Keep inspiring people to grow ;)

    I would somewhat disagree with all of the fair test comments. Jared certainly isn't intentionally trying to fix this test, watch a few more of his videos and you will see that's not how he does things. Try looking at it from a different perspective...Luke has shown multiple videos as to how this product produces great produce in good soil. I believe a true test is how it performs in poor soil. I don't expect these beans to be the best crop he has had by any means due to the nature of the original soil content, and I think it control will show the difference. If the Trifecta mix gives even decent results, this test was a success. Think about it, if you get decent results from poor soil, what do you think will happen with really good soil? This test will show exactly what this product can do in a suboptimal environment. I agree that Jared has wonderful inputs for his growing needs based on his location and animals. I also agree that a comparison study against compost, miracle grow, etc would be a good test, but this isn't what he is trying to achieve here. To me this is a very basic test of this product to see the true advantage of it in really poor soil. Luke has shown what it can do in good soil, I'm curious to see what it will do in the bad stuff because let's face it, not all of us have perfect soil and I'm looking forward to seeing how this holds up under really tough conditions.

    those numbers used in this labeling scheme do not directly represent the source composition or absolute nutrient content of the fertilizer. Also it is based on weight so if you mix in fillers your weight of nutrients will be lower.

    I seen video the other day were the guy used triple 19 or triple 13 fertilizer during planting watermelons and wound up with 50 to 100 pound melons. he said the cost was about 14 dollars for 40 pounds. he used the same thing with chicken litter on his tomatoes and they were monsters. How much is that Trifecta and sea 90 I can't remember the channels name something like runnin gardener reb but he was very good at showing things cheaply done.

    This is not a fair comparison. Besides control you should have regular miracle grow to compare with. Right now you are comparing no fertilizer to fertilizer. Of course Trifecta will do better. This looks fixed. I am sure you were not intending to have an unfair test. Just add one with regular store bought fertilizer to an other 2 buckets to make it fair.

    Maybe he's not testing if it works better than other fertilizers but wants to simply see what amount of improvement it provides? He said himself he wanted to see the difference between no amendment and amending with trifecta. If that's what he wants to see then the experiment setup is perfect. How about everyone who has an issue with it does their own experiment and then makes their own video about their results??

    About 10 years ago, I decided to try using compost tea in my garden. The concept fascinated me. I then had a conversation with my wife. Wife: What are you doing now? Me: I'm mixing compost tea. Wife: What for? Me: For my veggies, obviously. Wife: You mean, in addition to all that other stuff like seaweed and fish oil and Gawd knows what else? Me: Yep. Wife: What does this stuff do? Me: It delivers the ingredients in the compost to the soil ... um ... more quickly that just putting compost on the beds. Wife: How do you know it works. It just looks messy to me! Me: Compost is messy. And I KNOW it works because other gardeners are using it and they say it works for them. Wife: I'm glad we don't handle our finances the way you manage your garden! And we're running out of room to store all that stuff you add to the garden. Me: Okay (I probably really said "Yes, dear" but I don't want to sound sexist ... oops). That conversation bugged me so much so that I decided to have a lab do soil tests. It was expensive but I found I had a reasonably healthy soil a little high in phosphorus and potassium. I resolved to add nothing more to my raised beds but compost (home made). I've had great success with my veggies since that time. My nature has always been to explore and try new things but especially when it comes to my garden, I do not try anything new that doesn't show a reasonably evidence-based, measurable result as tested on a normal healthy soil. I don't give any credibility to anecdotal results, scientific-sounding advice, testimonials, claims that hundreds or thousands have found success, or "it works for me". Choose any gardening topic for soil amendments beyond compost then do a Google search on that topic. Filter your search by using terms such as "field trial". Pay particular attention to domain sites such as *.org or *.unv - science-based sites. This can be done on such subjects as compost tea, rock dust/azomite, biochar, etc. In fact, I did this on the topic of this video - Trifecta Plus. You will notice that on many topics, there are very few controlled field trials. And if you think about it, the reason is that the particular ingredient doesn't show any significant result when applied to the average, healthy garden soil. And then there's "confirmation bias" ... that's the "active ingredient" in a large number of garden products out there. If you really think about it, if a prolific garden KZreadr had a product that REALLY works, don't you think they would publish a controlled field trial on their product?

  • @JandjacresNet

    @JandjacresNet

    Hey Ron, thanks for your post. I do understand where you are coming from and generally agree, though I don't think I can agree with your last statement. On one hand, fertilizer is fertilizer - in the sense that it wasn't as if he was making a claim that you'll get a bumper crop every year or grow a tomato the size of your head, etc. All I can do it put it in my perspective. Lets say I made compost at home and wanted to sell it to folks. Would I publish some sort of controlled field trial? Probably not. I'd probably just tell folks it works great in my garden and tell them what all I put into the compost. But, that's just me!

    Perhaps I misunderstood your point. I presumed you were suggesting that a KZreadr would go out and pay for a formal study to be done on their product. Frankly, if the N-P-K has been analysed, then they are meeting the same requirements as any other fertilizer producer. But, as I said, I'm with you - make compost.
