Tri Plane Hull Single by CI Surfboards (Team Edit)

Watch some of my friends enjoy the glide of the new Tri Plane Hull Single I worked on with the great team at Channel Islands Surfboards. This fun, user-friendly midlength incorporates a fresh take on a Al Merrick’s Tri Plane Hull bottom design he refined and built during the ’70s and ’80s-a Greenough inspired planning hull that generates tremendous “lift” for added speed and ease of control.
We set out to build a better egg-style, single-fin-a genre of surfboard that can often look cool and groovy but tend to ride slow and sticky, sometimes lacking pizazz or drive through the turns. By incorporating a Tri Plane Hull bottom with a Al’s classic egg outline, and combined with our modern style rail and rocker profiles, we landed on a rather spicy midlength design that has a surprising amount of trim speed and drive through its turn in small surf-making this a reliable long-railed performer in conditions ranging from subpar to above average.
The Tri Plane Hull Single comes with beautiful color lamination options that are sealed with a matte finish gloss coat and outfitted with a minimalistic logo treatment which pays homage to some of Al’s early surfboard creations. Look for a Tri Plane Hull Single at your local CI dealer, or start building your custom today here: cisurfboards.com/products/tph...
To compliment this beautiful midlength, we also worked on a custom built single-fin that is available in three sizes: 8”, 8.5” and 9”. The “CI Single Fin” has a sleek, rather upright template, which helps the board pivot and turn on dime. And its conservative rake profile provides a nice flow on down the line point breaks. Our general sizing guideline goes as follows: 8” for 6’7” & under; 8.5” for 6’8” to 7’5”; 9” 7’6 & over. The CI Single-Fin can be found at your local surf shop or here: cisurfboards.com/products/ci-...

My dad made us each triplane bottom single fins with this outline in 1968. Joe was 43 years old and his was 7'4", and I was 11 years old and mine was 5'1". Both boards were stringerless, glassed with minimal 4ounce, and were radically lighter than the other boards of the times. There was sort of a secret sweeping fad for ultra light stringerless boards amongst the hottest board making surfers in '68 and '69. '68 was a great fun breakthrough era in the transition period of surfboards from classic Phil Edwards and David Nuuhiwa long boards, to effective short boards that could actually shred eyeballs and blow doors off of hinges. The south shore of Oahu in the summer of '69 was a hot bed of shredding and surfboard innovation, and the waves were on fire. Some of the leading shaper's of the time besides my dad Joe were Ben Aipa, Gerry Lopez and Reno, Don Koplane, Rick Irons, Davey Smith, Barry Kaniapuni, and many high end local shaper's. One of the hottest surfers that I have ever seen, was this phenomenal shredder Mark Sedlack at Kaisers. But that is the era from which this style of board arose.

Would Love to watch a " CI TPH according to Devon Howard" to get some more insight! I'm pretty sure I will be making this board my first mid length. For the past 20 years I haven't surfed anything over 6'1 and in the past 5 the longest would be my 5'7" weirdo ripper but I want transition to just cruising the wave and enjoying the ride instead of ripping and tearing down the line.
