Driving through Mississippi feels like dimension-hopping in and out of the apocalypse. Growing up in Mississippi (at least for me) felt like living in a Faulkner novel mixed with some Bronte and plenty of Crisco. Visiting now is like touring a disaster zone that no one evacuated. Edit: wow, this actually captured most of the emotions I have about my home-state. Thanks.

To me the things he said at the end seemed relaxing and totally acceptable. After humanity it will take a long time for another species to be able to completely dominate all life on earth. Our idiotic actions will be lost to time, our skyscrapers will crumbe and eagles will nest on them. Even if you don't look at it ecologically or even if you don't look at the harm we have caused (i believe humans are able to live in harmony with other species but idk if we will), still, isn't it a simple law of nature and don't you want existence to be spicy and interesting? Few thoughts give me as much calmness as the inevitability of human extinction in contrast to the endurance of life on eart and the thought of the impermanence of everything.

Mississippian here- the Delta is like another world. The poverty of Mississippi is by far more concentrated in the Delta area compared to even just further down south in the Vicksburg region, and most of Mississippi isn't quite so run down or neglected. It really is sad and awful how our government seems to have just abandoned that entire region though, and much of the neglect can be directly tied back to Jim Crow, sharecropping, and slavery.

Super interesting to see an outside perspective on Mississippi. I agree with pretty much everything you've said. There's whole portions of my city that are just rows of empty building's. There's huge luxurious houses directly next to crumbling shacks that people still live in. And nature is present everywhere, even in the most densely populated areas. It's interesting too see how different all of this really is. How bizarre and dystopian this state is.

Most of the land in Mississippi is still owned by out-of-state rich families and investment firms up north. The state had came up with a scheme where if a landowner lets the land go fallow and the state can log pine trees every 12-15 years or so there is no property tax, so people can park their money in land and not even have to pay a maintenance fee. Carpet bagging is still a thing

Packs of local dogs are really common in Mississippi. All the dogs where I lived were let loose in the morning, and they'd meet up and run around in a little pack, going from house to house looking for attention and treats, then go back home at nightfall. Twenty miles over in the next loose cluster of houses, there was another pack of dogs for their neighborhood, with a Boer goat running along with acting just like a dog. Southerners love their dogs, but the culture is pretty lackluster in caring for them. They tend not to take them to the vet, and just let them run loose and unspayed.

I'm a native of Greenwood, MS. For most of my life I always caught myself thinking, "Things could be better. Why do we bother staying here?" As you could guess, I grew up jealous of those in other parts of the country with more to see and do. But your reflections on this place at the end - as a truly unique blend of the past and future - whatever that future may hold, were phenomenally well said. Thank you Trey, for shining light on this place I reluctantly call home, and making even me appreciate it just a little more - even if for a brief moment.

You visited the Mississippi delta. It really does look like a post apocalyptic world. Cities like Clarksdale in the delta were at one point some of the leading cities of the state, but the area is now dangerous and run down. There are other really cool, more safe, places in this state though.

This is so much more interesting than most other travel vlogs I've seen. I can't explain why. But it was fascinating, especially the small town stuff and the characters you showed, like Red. Usually travel vlogs are for big cities, or the 'adventurer' type, and they all end up blending into each other in my mind. But this was a perfect mix of these 'genres'.
