100%. It’s what makes Trey’s playing so unique an memorable for me, is his timing: his sense of tension and release using phrasing and cadence not just with pitch, but with rhythm as well. Lots of guitarists can “play the notes”, play even 16ths or 32nds, but going back and forth between triple and 4sie in interesting ways, not always grooving with the kick and snare, but playing “around” the space they occupy at times, weaving in and out of the groove pocket the same way he weaves in and out of major and minor feels within a single phrase using that signature mixed bluesy scale, ala Julius, is the magic and genius of Trey IMO

When I'm playing, all I need is my guitar. When I'm working and learning, I need my guitar and a metronome. I started as a drummer in 6th grade band because I had asthma and couldn't blow a horn. I played through 9th grade then I quit. I started learning guitar about 5 years after high school, and I played a lot but I didn't practice well. Put the guitar down for 25 years and picked it back up about 5 years ago. I focused most of my efforts on my fretting hand and realized a couple of years ago that I was a lousy rhythm player. So I've slowly been working on my strumming hand rather than my fretting hand. My time on drums is really helpful in that I can hear the drum part in my head on most songs.

Dude, I kind of did what you’re talking about, but in reverse recently. I did grow up playing saxophone in band in grade school the whole way through HS, then picked up guitar when I was 17. I went to a school that had a really good music program, and we’d devote a lot of time to rhythmic exercises like you’re showing here but much more involved. Fast forward a billion years and now I’m a 51 year old man with another billion guitars, bass, amps, etc. I had a cajon and a number of hand drums and stuff around the house. One day, I decided I was going to go buy a drum set, how hard could it be… Boy, was I wrong. I can barely do anything with this drum set. I completely lack limb independence. Fortunately, my stepbrother just moved into my house last week whom happens to be a drummer. He said he’d try to help me with these.

This was awesome. One of my best friends and someone I hang with often is a drummer, I play bass and guitar. He and I (coincidentally?) have been talking about this exact thing for the past few weeks.t It has been a revelation to my playing. I have always felt it but being conscious of it changes the game. Every musician should practice with a metronome, and practice should be playful and fun.

So, basically the opening of Tool’s ‘The Grudge’.

This is so true! When I was in junior high school, my best friend was a drummer (I had not yet taken up any musical instruments at this time) who like many drummers was constantly drumming on stuff with his fingers etc.… So I would try to do it and he would laugh at me, which being the competitive person I am, made me determine to figure out how to do it correctly! 😄 So for a few years before I finally picked up the guitar, I used to drive around and listen to music a lot, and while doing so would with my index fingers tap out the drum beat on the steering wheel. Doing this, I developed a really good sense of time, particularly because by that point I was already into Progressive rock which had trickier beats than your average top 40 😊 So by the time I started playing around age 16, rhythm just wasn’t an issue, it was mainly just learning the technique of the guitar itself and musical structure and of course developing calluses on the fingers lol. To this day, this is something I’ve kept up… When I got the “Shut up ‘n’ Play Yer Guitar” box set by Zappa, I got my first introduction to polyrhythms and many new learning experiences with Vinnie on the drums there. 😂 If anybody has any doubts about what Trey is saying here, extinguish them! This makes such a huge difference it’s unbelievable .

@@PhishGuitarLessons I first saw Phish August 14, 1993 at Tinley Park. Amazing show, one of many that tour (unfortunately this was the only one I saw, but I made it my quest to locate as many of them on tape as possible 😁), that SOAM just put me into orbit, sooo trippy. Was also fortunate enough to catch both The Bomb Factory and Columbia MO (Funky Bitch!) in ‘94, Trey w/MMW in Austin at Emo’s (got a soundboard of that one on DAT!), and a number of other great experiences! The band’s music and improvisation have been truly beautiful and magical, and a true source of inspiration and amazement to this day.

Jake Cinninger also started out on drums.

Key point is that rthym is non negotiable, your in the groove or not. Where as notes and chords are negotiable, of what sounds good or bad.

This was a long waste of time, I knew I hated this guy

I hate Trey's tone. Tubescreamer's mid hump sounds thin, and ross compressor sounds squishy. Why do people like squishy?
