I still don't understand how it being used to oppress people over half a century ago makes it worse than a black person painting their face white. I don't even know of any examples of people using it that way in the past 50 years in a major way, or often.

Do you normally relate to people unlike yourself in this manner? I also wonder why you believe a never-ending race card is being played. Have you experienced a lot of time around black people? Why do you feel confident with this assertion? And why are black people in denial about the historical slaveryissue? I do not think you are a racist but I DO think you have not really had a deep conversation with African-Americans, especially some of our elderly citizens who had to go through a lot. I hope you take the time to answer my questions. I look forward to your reply. Thanks.

These shows where white mean would dress up as black people and point all their comedy at mocking them and making them look stupid and advancing every stereo type during the periods of lynching and jim crow. The term Jim Crow was actually the name of one of these minstrel show characters. You can youtube them and see how fucked up they were its crazy. And again this wasn’t a small thing. This was at some point the biggest form of entertainment. Everyone went out of their way to see them.

Because I was a child in a town with NO black or brown people, and only one Jewish family that had no kids, I knew nothing of race. We did NOT discuss slavery until we got to history and the Civil War (and never went farther, in 12 years of a decent public school education of the era, we never learned about anything in the 1900s...) I had no clue race was an issue - or even a thing - until my racist uncle showed my the other side. YOu want ignorant, ya got it. We are what we are taught.

I’m Dutch and we have a tradition here, it’s a children’s holiday, called ‘Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet’ (St. Nicolas and Black Pete). Black Pete is a Spanish more, who’s ‘zwart als roet’ (black from soot)... he’s St. Nicolas servant/aid who helps him brings kids presents at night, traditionally trough the chimney, that’s where the soot’s coming from. We have a whole social debate going on here now for the last couple of years where we get educated in what blackface means to most people in the world. It’s a cultural clash between Dutch traditions and the feeling of the Dutch people that they have given up so much to accommodate immigrants living here, and a overwhelming collective unwillingness to hear the arguments against black Pete’s look and how it hurts people by locking down in a, it has to stay as it is, frenzy. I’ve been black Pete and as him I’ve made so many children feel the magic of this tradition and brought joy in to their little lives.... because of that it took me years to get there and finally understand the problem with it... so despite of the magic I brought to so many little kids I could never bring my self to dress up like the current Black Pete ever again, now I know the whole truth.... but it’s been difficult trying to make my fellow Dutchmen understand... simply because all of us have such a wonderful nostalgic feeling of joy and happiness around our own magical years of believing in the fairytale of St. Nicolas that we instinctively get very defensive when ever anyone attacks the tradition, or even makes us feel like they are negative in anyway about it. The whole discussion has become so divisive and polarized that it’s completely toxic these days... and for us Dutch it’s highly unusual to get so polarized as a society on anything... But I can say from experience that once you see the racism in the way my society chooses to portray Black Pete? You could never not see it. For me, personally, a very uncomfortable and confronting experience. But it’s been a fine line between being vocal with my opinion and not getting in to a huge fight with friends and relatives... they are not ready yet and they feel that when they respect my opinion, I have to have respect for theirs.... the problem is that there is nothing respectful about black face at all... Pete doesn’t have to be black and his soot doesn’t have to cover his face like skin.... it’s ridiculous, but at the same time I get why so many Dutchmen resist changing Black Pete... it took me years of internal struggle to come to terms with something that as a kid was magical for me, a tradition in which I as a teen and young adult ignorantly participated in, before I got to the point where I was ready to see things in the eyes of the other and understand and accept the problems with Black Pete (problems which are not easily resolved, because of extreme polarization on the topic)

Alexandria East black pete’s origin lies somewhere in the 19th century, as a servant never a slave. As during the same time period slavey was abolished in the Netherlands. But in this day he’s portrayed more like St Nicolas jolly helpfull friend then a strict servant. That doesn’t mean his physical appearance doesn’t find its roots in our colonial past...it does. And the stereotypical look is rather offensive once you see it for what it is!

Michael Bennink oh so. It's subtle racism in today's culture. The characters' role was changed to appeal to times but the character's looks shouldn't be touched. I see now. It's a reminder of slavery to black people. But the character's look is iconic to the Dutch. Like it would be strange if Elmo was blue all of a sudden instead of red. Right?

I lived in Belgium for a few months and was shocked and hurt to see such a tradition. When I tried to explain to my Belgian classmates why it was offensive , they didn't understand, or want to challenge their tradition. I hope more people come to see how dehumanizing it is, as you did.

Black people have been having the conversation for over a century now. It's regularly scheduled programming. Problem is, white people really started to tune in about 40 years ago, and already want to change the channel. Imagine binge watching Grey's Anatomy, someone stops by to visit somewhere in the middle of season 6, and they grab the remote to look for something else to watch by season 7. Crazy, huh?

Some school has not had new textbook since 9/11, and their desks and chairs were falling apart. In the North West, if I remember correctly, they deprived the school of supplies and meanwhile the oil industry donated them. However, the school had to teach the kids that oil industry is good.
