I was using Tretinoin for 3 years with no results except dryness, peeling, and more breakouts until I discovered Dr. Dray and switched to Differin and OMG my skin cleared up almost overnight!! I still can’t believe it 🙏🏼🙏🏼 My skin just loves Differin and I will never stop using it! I used Differin .1% for 2 months and didn't really see any effect for better or worse. I realize now I should've tried with it a little longer. Anyway I asked my Dr to switch me to tretinoin but once I got it home and looked at the ingredients I realized that most brands of tretinoin are formulated with Butylated Hydroxyanisole (which the US Department of Health and Human Services has called a "reasonably anticipated human carcinogen") or BHT (which is also a suspected carcinogen). I'm just a regular old person who prefers the ingredients in my products not to be likely carcinogens so for me Differin wins. Especially because I realized they make a .3% formulation. I wish there was more discussion of this as I had no idea until I got the tretinoin prescription.

The dose makes the poison: you aren't being exposed to dangerous levels of either of those *suspected* (not in humans, mind you) carcinogens. It comprises a tiny part of the formula, and probably can't even get through your skin.

I was just literally searching for adapalene vs tretinoin comparison videos and information YESTERDAY and today you published this video, it almost feels like you read my mind! Thanks for this very informative video. I would like to ask, if my skin can tolerate tretinoin well (my main problem is acne but of course I would like to also prevent skin aging), would tretinoin still be a better choice than adapalene? I was thinking if adapalene somehow is a better choice for acne treatment compared to tretinoin?

Dr. Dray, I have a question I haven’t seen asked anywhere yet: Is it redundant to use a thin layer of adapalene after cleansing at night followed by retinol cream? Specifically I apply a thin layer of adapalene after I wash my face to damp skin because I want increased penetration and my skin tolerates it. I follow this with Advanced Clinicals retinolcream. If I ever feel my skin barrier is compromised or my skin is more sensitive, I will forgo one or both of these steps and just use basic Vanicream to moisturize and give my skin a break. But yeah my main question is regarding redundancy of both adapalene and retinol at night. Thank you so much!

Yes, I read about the occurrence of dry eyes, after usage of retinoids on reddit a few days ago. There were some people, who talked about it, even from retinol(!). Sometimes it's reversable, often it's not. And I guess, I have to try to leave out the eye area and see, if the condition of my own dry eyes improve (which I now strongly suspect to be caused by my usage of retinol, I never thought about that, before reading that thread. The dry eyes definitely occured after starting my retinol usage and I had never amy problems with dry eyes before). If that won't help, I guess I will have to think about leaving retinol out of my skincare. ☹

It is said to be «the first double conjugate retinoid to deliver both AHA and RC to skin on a hydrolysis based time released mechanism thereby theoretically maximizing efficacy while simultaneously minimizing irritation.» A woman at a skin care center tried to sell me a product today that had this ingredient, and according to the sales woman it is as efficient as Tretinoin but without the irritation. When googling I find studies that conclude the same, but I’ m trying to be source critical and would love to hear your insight on the matter. Thanks a million 🤩

Also, Tretinoin does not spread well and I can never tell if I have enough coverage using the product as is. So I’ve decided to thin it with aloe. I guess the questions to ask is how much of skins surface area does tretinoin need to cover to be effective. By diluting it with aloe this should make it potentially less effective, no?

I use Mylan 0.01% tret in alcohol denatured gel and I feel like that is a challenge to continue because I'm dry and it's just slightly slower to reach the plateau of results. Plus the vehicle evaporates fast so it's HARD to distribute evenly with a pea size. I miss spots and end up with inflamed areas after a hot shower etc. because I had to squeeze out more gel to get my whole face.

Tretroin on the other hand works better on wrinkles so alot more people who don’t have acne but would use it for wrinkles could use it inadequately causing problems.

Anyone reading the comments here, if you have melasma - don't waste your time and money on adapalene (Differin gel). I don't know if it works for sunspots, it definitely does not work for melasma. I've been using Differin gel for 1.5 years now religiously every night - I have not seen a tiny difference, it's probably a bit worse. I wear sunscreen every day, top up every 2 hours even indoors (since I don't wear makeup). If I go out, I wear a big hat with a mask (to cover my face, not for covid reasons). If the sun is really strong, I use an umbrella /a sunbrella - I live in Asia, no one will give me a strange look. I cannot get RetinA where I live.
