Thanks so much for the mention ! And thank you for advising restraint before all else... A polite word (especially here in the south) will get you further than anything else... You can always escalate the situation to meet a threat, but there is no need to start there - or a southern boy might escalate to meet your level - then you have a problem that didn't need to be... Appreciate ya putting this out there ! Thanks for sharing ! Peace.

Came home from work and found some women in my back yard, asked her what she was doing on my property and she replied just taking pictures of my beautiful trees. Asked her to leave once and was ignored so I told her to take those pictures on the run and introduced her to my Rottiie

on my way to Birmingham from Memphis about 20 years ago, i pulled off the interstate near Peppertown, Mississippi. ended up losing my sense of direction and on county roads away from 'town'. i drove by a place with a long driveway and noticed some people sitting in lawn chairs so i stopped, backed up and pulled in to ask for directions. obviously they looked upon me with suspicion at first, but after explaining my situation they understood that i was just a fellow southerner in need of assistance. we ended up having an hour long conversation and although ill never see them again i felt like i had made some new friends that day. im pretty sure this wouldn't happen up north.

Come visit PA sometime before you judge, its wonderful where I was born and raised. We got more churches than bars, there ain't a single adult store in my county and acres upon acres of farmland and mountains. People still stop along the road if they see you in trouble. We are a carry state too and we have castle law on the books, trespassing is serious but kindness and respect will probably get ya directions and sweet tea not a gun....and yeah we love sweet tea too! LOL Just stay out of the cities they are full of trash for sure.

Dan, thank you for today's video. At first I thought something had happened on your property, I'm glad it didn't. I think knowing your neighbors and who belongs in your "neighborhood" is a big help to many people. They look out for one another. When you live somewhere and no one wants to know the neighbors or be a part of a neighborhood, well, that makes it hard to know the strangers. Being polite is always the best way to be, but it is sad that a good deal of the time, that doesn't always help. I believe that when a person is unsure, and can't determine "who" someone is, it is best just to call law enforcement. It's their job to help and be sure that everyone is safe. Thanks for sharing. Catherine

This is so true! I let my neighbors know a tractor and a group of guys were on their land down in the bottom corner. Found out later it was the electric company coming through clearing out the limbs away from the power lines. Never know around here, but we always look out for our neighbors and their place. I want them to do the same for our little farm!

Yes...you are correct. We have family in California who came here to Oklahoma for the funeral of a family member. Our California family was asking...who are all these people? There were probably 50 cars parked up and down the road at the house. People bringing food so the family didn't need to cook. Ladies from the church all in the kitchen washing dishes...Lmao they couldn't believe it. People mowing the yard etc. And its like that for about 2 weeks people calling and dropping off food. Its nothing to have a flat tire and 3 or 4 cars stop trying to help....especially if you are a Lady...or elderly. That's how it is around Tishomingo, Oklahoma where I live.

Well Dan this is the video I missed and I did it kind of on purpose. I had my reasons. Now that I've watched it, it was pretty good. In Florida you are only allowed to open carry on your own property. My property is totally fenced and gated. To trespass you have to open a gate. A few times I've had knocks on my door that were strangers. I do the same thing every time. As I am going to the door I pick up my shotgun and lean it up inside against the frame. I the look out a window to size up who is there. I simply answered the door in all cases except 1 and those times someone just looking for somebody else. The one time I picked up my shotgun and held it with my right hand pointing down. It was some thug looking young man asking about a car I had sitting in my yard or so he says. I told him he had some nerve just waltzing in someones yard out here. All I got were yes sirs and no sirs out of him but his looks were fishy. I asked him to not return and I never saw him again. Would I pull my gun on someone? If I felt threatened I would. But like you said politeness works best. We have only old people on our dead end street and we watch out for strangers. I felt I did the right thing by putting a little fear in him. It is what it is. Take care Dan.

I agree Dan. Most of the time you can politefully inform someone that they are on your property and you would rather they not do that and from my experience it works but if it doesn't then move on to other things. But most of the time it's just that people don't understand the rules of rural America. For instance people who have never owned land. Great video Dan! You stay safe out there.

As a Southerner from the great state of Georgia, I concur; If you see someone on your property, whether it is marked or not, be polite, be aware of your surroundings, and keep in mind your safety it is first and foremost. If you don't feel safe, trust your feelings, your not! Put a barrier between you and the trespasser, a closed door, rolled up car window, five or six feet, whatever it takes. If you see two trespassers take note you may be in danger. Deal with them from a distance or with other people that you know as backup or witnesses. Personally, I am always armed and I have my dog with me at all times. No one wants to mess with a great big Rottweiler or any other large dog. If things are going well, don't argue with the idiot, just excuse yourself, go inside and call the police, or have someone inside the home do so if they feel things are getting bad. If they start to talk shit, just walk away and make your phone call. If they decide to get froggy and jump on your lily pad; give them the rude awaking. After all they would have deserve it. Things are different in each part of the country. If you are out in the country, you learn to be more on your guard. If you are in the sticks and know your neighbors; then you have a support group to draw upon for help. If you live in the suburbs, then let the police handle it. They can be there faster than a greased pig at the county fair. Trespassers look for weakness so stand tall and strong. Don't put up with any crap. Just remember these four rules: 1.) Train your family members what to do and how to do it. 2.) Safety first, you and your family 3.) Be polite, but, be firm. Let it be known that they are trespassing and are not welcomed on your property. 4.) You will defend yourself if need be. Good video Dan. Keep 'em coming.

Approach a trespasser with extreme caution ! A cowboy who was checking cattle approached 2 men fishing his pond. He got shot in the head with a 357. They found his feed truck still running and then found the man lying on the pond bank DEAD ! This happened a 1/4 mile from where I lived. They eventually caught the 2 men...They were trespassing and fishing, but they had a history. So be extremely cautious !

But I have an very protective Australian shepard and she will bit anyone she doesn't know. If I get a trespasser it is most likely that person will be bloody. I have no beware of Dog signs because if you put those up, that means in court they you are aware that your dog is dangerous.

I used to do security in Boston. For years, I was most people’s first contact on most sites, especially overnight. I’ve learned to make friends quickly with the homeless in the area, being polite helps a lot and always being prepared to handle anything that pops up. I grew up in NC, where we are miles apart from each other. Now that I live in NY (we recently bought a house here) our property isn’t huge.... it’s about an acre and 1/4 heavily wooded. We’ve only been here a few months, but, have had several instances of trespassing. Mostly, people thinking the previous owners still live here, a few looking for their dog, and teenagers.... thanks for your video.

Home In The Sticks you’re very welcome! I was raised hybrid- I was born in Mass, spent time in Maine, moved to NC for middle and high school (definitely a culture shock) then moved back to Mass for college. Two months ago my other half and I bought a house in NY. My move to NY (upstate) wasn’t very difficult, since I’d insisted on living somewhere rural (rural here means I have an acre vs a condo) My other half works in NYC, so, we live within 45 minutes of that. I’m home alone most days. So, even when I’m working out in the yard, my dog is with me.... he’s huge and would definitely get my point across. Since we’ve dealt with the last trespassers, we’ve not had any issues. Maybe word got around not to come here. Who knows. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for more posts.

Hi . Im English. I have been visiting the southern states of America a couple of times a year for over 20 years . I always visit the back roads rather than the tourist spots . If I get lost "which does happen sometimes" !!!! I have found the folks I meet to be the most descent , humble , friendly, charming human beings around. I have never met an angry man nor had a gun waved at me etc . I think when they hear our accents they think we are just crazy "British" . they normally want to feed us , a lot want to adopt us ! lol . the hospitality is truly humbling . I always offer to pay , always being mindful not to offend even when clearly sometimes feeding another couple of mouths is a struggle . but to refuse us also insulting so its hard . I ask if I can leave money for a local charity they can donate it to instead . that always goes down well and they want to adopt us even more ! you have wonderful countryside and wonderful people in the south . being polite and apologising is all anyone ever expects or asks . your lucky to live in such a lovely place .

My parents raised me right, I would never think of trespassing on property that doesn’t belong to me. I don’t understand people who feel entitled to act this way. Told an 85 year old man who lives down the street to stay off my property. Polite, but direct. He’s been walking thru my yard for a while now, also peeking thru the slats on the privacy fence. That was the last straw! Warned him that next time I will contact the police. Felt bad since he’s so old, but don’t want him doing it.

Great thoughts Mr. Dan! I like hearing it from the side of a police officer, even if it ain't in my state...I just met my new neighbors today up at my new land, I've got "no trespassing" signs up for when I ain't up there, but they waited until they seen me there, just pulled in the driveway right off the road and stopped, and got out real polite like and introduced themselves like good old country folks do, and I liked that. You're right, polite can go a long way before you gotta take it anywhere else, esp. if you're like me moving into a new rural area and it may just be a neighbor introducing themselves, I like what you said, something like "find out what's going on" first, before you just start blasting with a shotgun, lol.

Interesting topic indeed. If it is a friendly, there is an opportunity to give the person some tomato plants and talk to them about gardening and maybe plant a seed that creates a new farmer. If it is an unfriendly, it can be turned into fertilizer for one's tomato plants. It's a win win either way really. Put the trespasser to work on your farm... or compost them. Cheers

O, buddy...other than being professional and blunt, I heard no suggestions when professional and blunt don't work. Neighbors, total strangers, walked onto my place passing the very clear No Trespassing sign and up to my motor home. I was kind, cordial, listened to their invitation to visit their church. After declining diplomatically, I asked if they'd seen my sign. "Yes, but nobody out here pays attention to that." Lots of residents in my "subdivision" have No Trespassing signs on their fences. It's not visitors to the neighborhood who're being warned off--it's other land owners. This is a very sad place, indeed. Their attitude is, Do whatever you're big enough to do. And, certain homeowners have game-camed the roads, other folks' property, know when you're home or not. Criminal mischief is rampant and the sheriff is impotent, sides with his favorites. Presently, they're piping noxious fumes into my home at night, 11 p to 5 a. Nobody, not sheriff, not deputies have been able or cared enough to stop it. I was told, if I ramp up my response, the neighbors will do the same. I've already had their bullets whiz over my head, hit the ground within 8 ft. of me. Rule: if someone wants to be a friend, wants to make nice, first, abide by my home rules. It's no friend that can't do that. Trees for privacy? It just gives them more places to hide.

Good points for sure, things are the same here in the PA sticks. Grew up with a junkyard and diesel garage family business. Many times found people getting in the cars at night, one particular time found two young guys diggin in the trunk of a junker. So with my shottie I asked them what they were doing? They blew a tire along the road on the edge of the yard and didn't have a jack...middle of the night so I was already tuned up! They weren't armed and were scared to death. So I opened the garage and got them a real jack, gave them the scrappy one they were gonna steal anyway and lol helped em and sent them on their way. My statement to them was just knock on the dang front door next time! I wish kindness was the worst disease we suffered as human beings.

I live in Arkansas. In my are, trespassing is not really treated as a crime, and the law really protects them more than anything. People can repeatedly "visit" your property. If you call the police, they will tell them to leave, but they will not do anything, even after multiple trips. One piece of land we own has a squatter living on it. We cannot make them leave without a costly legal process. Doing anything physically to them puts the legal burden on you.

uk. Today I had a neighbour trespassing on my property. There was a planning application going on and the Council had put it up on our driveway instead of the main road. The neighbour walked on the private driveway and up to the driveway to the house in question. I pretended not to know who he was and then he said he was a neighbour wanting to read the Notice. I said it is PRIVATE PROPERTY. How would you like it if we walked on his private land? He refused to move and then I said I will call the police. The neighbour said Go on Then. I then said I am going to get my Camera. It was when I said that he started moving lol I did report him to the police and reminded them we had problems with him previously and even then we contacted the police. Some of these trespassers have history which works against them. He will get a visit from the police. I wish I had my camera every time I am out of the house. I told the police that I was a Neighbourhood Watch Co ordinator which meant they would listen to me more lol I spoke to the Council and got them to move the Notice to somewhere more suitable. I said it was attracting strangers and paedophiles to the farm where there are young girls riding ponies we didnt want that lol

In daylight I would record the process of informing the trespassers that they are not allowed on the property. Dark, be safe and vigilant, record if possible. In texas I believe any detainment of trespassers can get sticky, like forcing them to stay while waiting for police, or telling them to move from here to there at gunpoint (potentially kidnapping). If the only crime is trespassing it is my understanding we can not hold them.

During the daytime, this 'might' work... But at 0300 hours, there is no way I am polite.. unless me sticking a .12 gauge in your face is considered to be.. Today, you can no longer assume.. And if your property is CLEARLY marked, there is also NO reason someone should be trespassing. We are not talking about those who come down the drive in plain view.. we are talking about those sneaking around in the woods or field you have. Yes you can be polite... but don't ever let them think your politeness is also weakness.. For me, I am 80 miles out from the nearest major town or city in Wisconsin... and it can take 25 minutes for the Sheriff to get here... Out here neighbors are your first responders and whether it is drug addicts coming to steal to support their drug habit or someone stealing the copper cables from irrigation systems ($23,000 to replace), unless you are INVITED onto my land, to me you are a threat to me and my family until proven otherwise.

hi man , i need serious help so hear my story - i have 1 hectare of farm land and it is isolated from the public on a private place where there are a lot of private owned lands. My land is beside the "street" , the street is going in my land - there is a path in my land. This path leads to the bridge across the canal. This bridge is the only way for farmers that own the other lands to get across the canal. So because of that they were walking over my land for the past 20 years. Its been soo long , today they even think that that path belongs to the goverment and they argue to my father saying "why did you cultivate half of the path, are you crazy , my tractor wont fit" and my father has to explain that this is not goverment street , but its our own land and he is trespassing over it the whole time. My question to you would be what would you do if farmers have to walk over your land in order to get to their own land? Can you please advice me what to do?

  • @HomeInTheSticks

    @HomeInTheSticks

    4 жыл бұрын

Hello Nenad G, welcome to the channel and our community!! Wow, the bridge on your property, is it a structure you or your family put up or did the government put the bridge in place? I notice you used the term "hectare" of land, what country do you live in? I would put up no trespassing signs around the perimeter of my property and seek legal counsel, I also read that it's been going on for 20 years as well. Here in MS, if my property ends at X location and I don't mark the boundaries of my property, my neighbor can encroach on my property legally since I didn't mark the boundary line marked, serval disputes such as this have been noted and both parties have gone to court over this as well. Clearly marking the boundary lines of one's property is the best way to go and if someone trespasses onto that property, after seeing that the property is "private property", legal action can be taken. I don't know if I answered your question, but under MS law, that's how it would work. Dan

The DEC officer came in with camouflage to catch the person in action. He found two deer stands in one tree, illegal here and the person had “baited” the deer, also illegal. Corn and deer treats going right up to the deer stand on my property. This is a normally quiet rural area which is beautiful and I feel safe. A few things though have also happened like finding a big patch of marijuana growing in my field!

In your open carry state if you have a gun on your person and you get pulled over by law enforcement how does that work out with a cop talking and possibly giving a traffic citation to a person. In los angeles a cop would be very upset if he found a gun on the person and would immediately pull his gun out and point it at you, It would be a very tense situation. Unless you have a guard card and a permit to carry a weapon for your work, if he finds it in your car he wll arrest you. It is foreign to me to have regular citizens interacting with policemen in public whern both are armed with pistols. PLEASE RESPOND

Hello Mr Bradley and welcome to my channel sir!! In Mississippi, most folks will let the police officer know that he/she is armed during a traffic stop, also in Mississippi if a persons drivers license is checked during a traffic stop, my state will let us police officers know that the person stopped is a concealed carry permit holder. I can't comment on California as I don't know much about that states laws regarding open carrying a weapon or concealed carry. Hope this answers your question!! Dan
