My fathers favourite Welsh hymn, was played at his funeral, I can always in my mind hear him singing Cwm Rhondda, he came from Pontnewydd, near Newport, and was a miner in his younger days, love this hymn, and loved Harry Secombe, I believe he had a strong connection to Swansea, where I am now living.

Thank you for that memory. At my dad’s funeral, which was in England, my Uncle’s choir couldn’t all travel, so they recorded a CD of Calon Lân which we played as he entered the chapel, while my two Uncles walked in front. The connection of my Uncle both singing and leading my father home was heartbreakingly beautiful. The story re your mother training the choir who sang her home, genuinely moved me.

Just Google "The Diary of Keturah Davies" It is a fascinating and moving account.

One of the most stirring hymn tunes ever and those three verses are a dynamite hymn, too. I want it sung at my memorial service. Actually, on reflection, there are a number of superb Welsh hymn tunes and superb Welsh tunes that are not used for hymns. The Welsh can sing -- and then some. One thing I remember is how stirred up the people in the congregation got when singing "Guide me, O thou great Jehovah" to the tune Cwm Rhondda, at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco as an opening hymn one Sunday. It seemed to me that we were all just glad to be there singing that tune with those words, all of us more alive for the singing of it.

Straight outta the _1982._ And don't neglect Lledrod/Spirit of God Unleashed On Earth, same book. And #335, I Am The Bread Of Life, with its soaring resurrectional refrain -- which I want sung at _my_ funeral.

I can attest to the fact that they are all "just"normal blokes, I recorded a CD for them a few years ago, they were mainly local boys, all down to earth and the likes of you and me :) I recognise the hall in the video and a couple of the faces. I can't remember exactly but Huw I think was the name of their MD at that particular time, and he was a very talented arranger, and maybe his work contributes towards the reason you think they're all professional singers :)
@TreorchyDeano11 жыл бұрын
Fascinating. I'd be interested to know what music it was sang to. Our "Cwm Rhondda" was composed in 1907 and has of course enjoyed worldwide fame. The words however were often used with other hymn tunes previous to this

Fascinating. I'd be interested to know what music it was sang to. Our "Cwm Rhondda" was composed in 1907 and has of course enjoyed worldwide fame. The words however were often used with other hymn tunes previous to this
Ha, this takes me back to more honest times
Never met a Welshman that couldn’t sing like an angel.

I’m sure there must be some, but none that I’ve met so far.
Diolch yn fawr i chi.
Wait a second: did Sir Harry still sound that strong in 1991, or was this dubbed? Wow!
A wonderful hymn!
