Trenord BRAND-NEW Hitachi Caravaggio - Italian Regional Train Review (Lake Como to Milano)

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report, this time from Lake Como in Italy. In this video I will be travelling on the all new Hitachi Caravaggio, a double deck regional train cropping up all over Italy for both Trenitalia and Trenord.
This trip starts at the mainline station in Como, that being Como San Giovanni. There is also Como Lago, which is at the end of a branchline. Being surrounded by the Alps and of course Lake Como itself, the departure is very scenic - best enjoyed from the top-deck of course. The train will continue down through various towns, then to Monza, before starting the final approach to Milan, and terminating at Milano Porta Garibaldi.
The train's design is certainly unique, with its bright colours and sharp front end. Overall, the interior delivers a decent way to travel for short regional trips. It's the same as the Trenitalia units, which are known as the 'Rock'.
With this train being made at the notorious Pistoia factory by Hitachi, I was keen to see how it performed, and to be honest it surprised me! Watch the video to find out why.

    Actually "Caravaggio" is the name that was given to it by Trenord which is the company you traveled with (Green and White livery), while Trenitalia, our national railway company named it "Rock" and gave it a Black, Yellow and Blue livery :)

    @@user-es3fl3yr9u they're two different trains. The "Rock" is the one ordered by Trenitalia with the blue-grey scheme on the inside and black, yellow and blue livery. The "Caravaggio" is the one ordered by LeNord with the green scheme on both the outside and the inside. The one in this video is one of 5 "Rock" trains used by Trenord and with the "Caravaggio" livery, but it's technically a different train

I travelled with this train on its inauguration day on the same route exactly 1 year and 1 day ago :) On the inauguration day the trips on the S11 line Chiasso (CH)-Como San Giovanni-Milano Porta Garibaldi where the trains were introduced first were free all the day! These are definitely... odd looking trains by the looks of it. One thing I'm especially surprised by looking at most pictures and videos of it are the big lack of windows in several parts of the train. It does look well lit inside however so I hope this doesn't become an issue in the long run.

    Great video the brand new train has a very open and airy interior which is good for regional trains and also charging ports which is essential now we are in the golden age of technology apart from that I have heard great things about Como if I'm ever in Italy have to check that out!

  • @lucaspublictransport995
    @lucaspublictransport9953 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Thanks for the video :) Since I live along this route ,I used to take those trains often So, let me explain a bit The interior, is the same of the trenitalia ones only in the first five units. The other 95 ones will have a Trenord stile interior. Seats will be the same, but in a "smoke/pollution" colour instead of blue, and thankfully with much attention to the windows so not to have rows without window like in this one Two units with the Trenord seats are actually entered in service but on the RE2 Milano-Bergamo line which... I never use so I haven't try the Trenord seat configuration one yet. I think, the older "strong" green was better, then this light green, but since the trains are rarely cleaned, at least is the new livery not white so to get the uncleanness a bit more hidden, because is really a shame to see trains in the old white livery becoming slowly totally black/smoked At least, the new livery is really bright and Lucent on sunny days (which are rare in Lombardy except for the lakes area :) ) Yes there is a electric bike rack on the train but unfortunately... You can't carry bikes. Since there is apparently a problem on some evening trains with a lot of glovo or something else riders trying to bord trains with thousands of bikes, bikes has been forbidden on Trenord The result, is that riders are certainly continuing to board evening trains with thousands of bikes ,but everyone other isn't allowed to use train with a bike, which means that a lot of users, especially on summer periods, especially on the lakes won't take the train because of this, and will carry their bikes on cars. In 2020 transport authorities should make everything possible to bring back passengers, that doesn't happen in FIAT-land-Italy which is kind of a "European America"

    I’ve seen the train in real life. It does not look nice. And also not futuristic. The sleekness you are referring to is not there. Also, these are probably AnsaldoBreda designed trains. The company now belongs to Hitachi. The thick door frames are really repulsive. And it seems to be an aerodynamic disaster.

    9:21 I don't normally take the S8/the Hitachi Caravaggio. I usually take the Besanino/s7 line... but man, I love the Hitachi Caravaggio. I catch it when the Besanino is delayed or cancelled, or if I'm going to Milan. I love everything about it; the telescreens, the double floors, the colour scheme, the air conditioning (the S7 line has some wagons which are not air conditioned). The Treno ad Alta Frequenza is still used on the line from Monza to Milano Centrale (although I don't recall where that one's from, maybe from Bergamo? I could be wrong. I just know that it arrives at Platform 5 in Monza), but that's not my jam. I don't like the colours; they look really outdated and just from another era. Nice video, earned a sub! Edit: at 9:50, is that the ALN688? I've never really taken the Besanino before they replaced all trains with ATR125s... and yet I did use to normally take it in my commute around 2020, and I've NEVER EVER seen an ALN688.

The Danish IC2 and IC4, as well as the Dutch V250 Fyra were delivered in a state so broken that the trains took years to get fixed, and in the case of the V250, the Dutch just gave up on it (after the Belgians said the train would not get permission to run there, because it didn't pass safety standards). An explanation about why the interior "looks" identical to Trenitalia "Rock" trains: the batch of trains this Caravaggio belongs to was actually booked from Trenitalia TPER (Emilia Romagna), but Trenord managed to get 5 of their trains (through auction discount and some other bureaucracy stuff) in advance to start replacing old trains earlier (like the one with E.464 you recorded at the beginning). Because they made the new IC's for the UK, which are known for being rattly and generally poor, as well as the V250 Fyra trains for the Netherlands, that got taken out of service after three weeks (after being five years late in delivery), because it was unreliable to the point of randomly catching fire. They also made the Danish IC2 and IC4 trains, which are known to be crazily unsafe and unreliable. The trains they make look nice, but they lack quality control, so their units are all 'slightly different from one another' . Things like the rattle of this train are normal for them. I give these units ten years, after that they have deteriorated more than the fourty-year-old trains they are replacing. I hope they keep the old ones in spare, they will need them.

They then as the objective terms of the tenders go, win the bid, make their subpar products, often delayed by several years as well! And yet they still get tons of money in the form of bailouts from each country's respective government in order to fix their faulty products, meaning by doing this they actually earn much more money than with a conventional bid! It's all just incredibly shady and immoral and yet you can't really make this behavior illegal either way! And yeah the history of this company is wild, I mean heck one of DSB's IC4 trains suddenly disappeared while it was being rebuilt in Pistoia and a few years later it's found in Libya, after the italian government and Ansaldo Breda apparently took the train, DSB had paid for, without their permission, and given it as a gift to the dictator Gadaffi behind everyone's back!
