The big subtext with casting Michael Gross as Burt is that he was best known for playing the hippie father in Family Ties, so seeing him as this kind of character was a huge shock, even though by now the role has completely eclipsed his popular image. Tremors is one of my favourite films of all time. It is just so perfectly tied together. Absolutely nothing that becomes important in the second half isn't put on the stage in the first half - it's as tightly written as Back to the Future. - The cliff at the end is the cliff at the beginning, and Earl talks about a stampede in their banter at the start - The poles they use to pole vault are from the old broken fence that Val and Earl are replacing - The barbed wire that Rhonda gets caught in is a spare roll from the fence they were putting up - The freezer unit in the shop is shown making a noise before it attracts the graboid later - The pogo stick - Earl driving the cat early on - Even 'population 14' lets you know exactly how big the cast is so you know there's no-one else to help or rescue - The final graboid is the one that took a bite out of their truck, because it's missing a tongue/head, and it's the one with the grudge against them And so many more! And every one of them is so subtle it feels like a perfectly natural piece of colour. It doesn't have a single plot hole or loose thread and, almost uniquely for its time, the couple get together because they're both resourceful, earnest and capable of improvement, rather then because they are the Designated Hero and Designated Love Interest. I could never tire of watching this film. Almost as good as The Princess Bride.

The Red Letter Media guys talked about this one a while back. They pointed out that all the way through the first part of the movie, *sound* is used very well, long before you know it's what the creatures are hunting with. Whenever they cut away, they cut to something noisy -- like the jackhammer at the road work. And when Val and Earl are investigating the sites of the kills, they go for a couple minutes with no dialogue as they look around, just sounds. It makes you watch -- and listen -- to the movie in a whole new way the next time around.

Bacon's wife was pregnant and had some sort of medical problems at the same time, they were also trying to buy a house, and he didn't want to leave his wife's side, but they needed the money, so when you're still basically a newcomer in acting - and you need the money, you take what you're offered. At the time, he thought a movie about giant, man-eating worms, was a stupid idea (that's how it was presented to him), so, due to the stress he was under, he did it, and never looked back, until he got tired of people asking when he'd do another. That's when he finally watched it, and realized how good it really was.

This is a 1950’s sci-fi/monster “B” movie done right, set in the modern day. It’s right up there with the classic movie Them, about giant ants. It didn’t do well when it first came out, but developed a “cult” status from reruns on TBS and USA networks. I thought it was very good movie when it came out. It still holds up today too.

The older Asian man in this was also in Big Trouble in Little China Reba's husband in this was the dad in an 80's show called Family Ties. That was the show where Michael J. Fox got his big break. He played such a level headed dad in that show so to watch him be a crazy gun toting doomsday prepper who took on these monsters was hilarious when I was a kid. Fred Ward was an awesome actor, and still kicking at 78. Not only was he great in Tremors, he was a scene stealer in "The Right Stuff" (1983, about the developments of jet test pilots, the early space race, and the accomplishments of the Project Mercury astronauts [the "Original 7"], it was nominated for 8 Oscars and won 4, a great movie with a stellar cast!). Fred's big leading role movie was 1985's "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins", shot 5 years before "Tremors" and it's interesting that he did most of his own (insane) stunts. It's has great humor, action, and character development. I highly recommend it to you Ashleigh, you'd dig it!

I dunno, there are a bunch of movies that can be in the running to fit that bill. "Dumb and Dumber" is the first that comes to mind -- people think that dumb comedy is easy, but for smart people, it's actually really hard. Especially to predict what's funny. "Samsonite. I was WAY off!" A lot of overlooked clever movies can be that way, too. Alex Garland's Dredd was way smarter than most people initially gave it credit for, being a "dumb action" movie and all. But they did an excellent job of character development through action, which is a great play for an action movie.

I don't consider Tremors a horror film. I think of it as a action/creature feature. Trivia: Burt and Heather used the following firearms to kill the Graboid that burst into their rec room: Stey-Mannlicher SSG-PII, Winchester model 70, Winchester Model 1200 Defender, HK91A2, Colt AR-15 Sporter II, Remington 870, Sig Sauer P226, Ruger Redhawk, M8 flare gun, and then finally Burt finishes it off with a Belgian William & Co. 8 gauge shotgun (the Elephant Gun).

This movie was my FAVORITE to rent as a kid. Literally every time we went to the off-brand small-town video rental in the 90's, 6 year old me would immediately run right to the horror section and grab that tape! 😆 Then, I'd spend the rest of the half-hour looking at the kid's movies for whatever else I thought might be good enough to watch afterward. None of them were ever as good.
