Trek's DRAGON of Space: Hysperian Monaveen

Ойындар

The Hysperian Cruiser, the RNS Monaveen or Monaveen-type starship is the flagship vessel for the 2380 Hysperian colony. It was their primary defensive and dimploatic vessel with some unique "ren fare" flair and draconic medieval style. First seen in Lower Decks, let's take a look at this Dragon of space!

Though Lower Decks naturally took a tongue-in-cheek approach to its depiction, a deliberately anachronistic and romanticized culture is a great approach to a post-scarcity society. People need a sense of meaning for their lives, and typically embrace grand narratives to find it. Building a culture around such narratives actually makes more sense than the United Earth’s vague “we work to better our selves and all mankind” ethos.

5:10 -- Referring to the warp coils as the Elf Matrix would make a certain kind of sense. Traditionally, the realm of Faerie is depicted as one where time and distance do not obey the same laws as they do on Earth. For instance, the Irish warrior Oisin famously fell in love with a Fae princess and went to live in her homeland. He later longed to return to visit Ireland and learn of the exploits of his brothers in the Fianna (the followers of Finn McCool -- equivalent to the Knights of the Round Table, but much wilder). His wife lent him an Elven steed and told him to on no account step down from the horse while visiting. He leaned over to help a farmer move a boulder (which seemed to Oisin to be a trifle, as it was only as tall as the farmer himself, and all the Fennian warriors would have easily tossed it about as if it were a skipping stone). The horse's saddle-strap broke, and Oisin fell. The moment he touched the ground, the 900 years he had been absent from Earth began to catch up with him and he rapidly died of old age -- a condition which had no effect on him in the Fae realm. There are also repeated warnings to not stray from the path one is shown to reach a destination, lest the traveler be forever lost ("follow the Yellow Brick Road" is a reference to that tradition). Again, suggesting that the Fae realm was in some sense not spacetime "as we know it".

Cool ship from a fun series. Already had a Magic-Space Knight when this came out in STO, this immediately became my primary with the Discovery Vanity Shield weaving a 'mysterious pattern' around the hull. Still running it... very fun ship to fly! Nearly as mobile as the best paid-for ships in its class with a full battle cloak so I can just disappear whenever I want to. Does seem to indicate to some of the more spendy types that I need help in group combats though. I rarely do, please do your part of the mission.

I would have loved to see a different ending to the Original Series episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?" where Kirk sent word back to the Federation to see if there were any people on Earth, Mars, etc that would be interested in coming to live with Apollo. An interweaving of Apollo's proclivities (and knowledge -- he was credited with inventing the concept of cities, politics, municipal administration, as well as several forms of music and arts), the interests of the colonists, and then-modern technology could have made for an interesting Federation-aligned world by, say, Next Generation era. I could imagine them launching exploratory vessels named Argo, Phosphoros (bringer of light, the name of a historical Athenian naval vessel), Paralos, and Salaminia (sacred Athenian ships used to carry messages and transport delegations to places like the Oracle of Delphi -- modern equivalent would be a diplomatic vessel).

After an encounter with the Monaveen Class, I wonder if it would inspire perhaps a Federation equivalent? (Minus the cloak of course). This would make a great Intel and stealth cruiser. And the "dragon scales" could be added as a newer form of advanced armor. Say it's the "sacrificial layer" and under is the Tritanium hull. An enemy can burn off the scales, but just underneath is a sort of "inner shield" protecting the hull. A lower cost version of "ablative armor". A sort of compliment ship to the Defiant Class. And perhaps even a task force of Defiant and the "Kulkulkahn" Class (In honor of the STTAS entity know as Kulkulkahn and his ship). Stealth and defense together.

I didn't know they'd thought through quite so many of the naming conventions. I really like the "scrying orb" for the sensors though. I always assumed the Hysperians declared independence from the Federation 50-100 years after colonisation, but I suppose they could've been independent from day one... since, as you say, the Federation doesn't withhold aid just because you won't become a vassal state.

Fire is only one type of plasma. Other forms of plasma are not generated by an exothermic oxidation chemical reaction. Also, it is entirely possible for fire (such as from rocket engines) to burn in a vacuum or even underwater as long as an oxidizer is present.

Medieval Europe actually had quite a diversity of skin tones, at least in cities and major towns, due to all the traders. In fact what we tend to think of as "traditional Medieval European food" is largely just imported Medieval Arabic food, hence the spices and frequent use of dates and raisins :) the lute was also imported from Arabia, then eventually turned into the guitar.

@@samwill7259 that’s fair. I often see repeated a myth that they never existed/visited/traveled at all. It’s true there isn’t much written evidence about how integrated they were into any communities, but there also isn’t much evidence of any particular hostility - no more than say a Spaniard or a Greek trader would get in Britain. They all seemed to be regarded as people just going on about their business, by and large. The exception in written works is antisemitism, that was very rife at the time and highly evident. But of course there were and are Jews with all colours of skin, so that wouldn’t look the same or be evident purely visually.

To be honest, I would love to have the "Monaveen style" for all my ships, Federation, Klingon and otherwise. It would fit incredibly well with them. With its' incredibly detailed appearance, individual orichalcum scales and the parts that look like dragon bones and horns, plus there are parts that look quite elegant, like giant blue jewels set in the skull of a dragon. Perhaps as a vanity shield or hull material. Someday. EDIT: And yes, I agree that the interior would have been nice too. Unfortunate we didn't get it - so I've had to do with the Lukari interior. Side note, orichalcum is real. It was, according to a quick Google search, an early form of brass. EDIT 2: In my own roleplaying Starfleet subfaction, the Draconia Cosmo Navy, we actually have something very similar to the Dragonsblood Reactor on our ships; however, ours comes in the form of a more traditional plasma lance known as the Solar Dragonfire Cannon. The name is often shortened to SDC, and it actually functions similar to the Wave Motion Gun from Space Battleship Yamato, in that it takes all the power of the ship to fire it, less shields, gravity and life support. Like the WMG of SBY, the Solar Dragonfire Cannon is spinally mounted and comes in two varieties, single massive sweeping beam (it sweeps through a 180-degree arc in the front of the ship when fired) and dispersion beam. (Though identical in function the Dispersion-type SDC is known by another name, chosen to honor another fantasy franchise.) Both models of SDC are insanely powerful, and capable of igniting stellar fusion, hence the name. This is a real threat in the universe of Star Trek given the fact that matter/antimatter warp drives collect and store interstellar hydrogen for the matter part of their fuel. Also, as a side note, while most people saw this ship and immediately went to "Planet Express rocket" I immediately saw Thunderbird 2 from the titular Gerry Anderson puppetry series as well as the later CGI series.
