Trek 1120 Overhaul - Shimano XT 12spd

In 2019 I purchased my Trek 1120 frame and fork and thus began this quest to find the Ultimate Bikepacking/Touring set-up. Over the years some things have changed along the way while some gear has found a permanent place on my set-up.
One thing I have come to accept is that the tinkering will likely never end and I am ok with that!
I think for me part of the fun is always looking for better ways to do things! If anyone has modified their Trek 1120 in anyway and would like to share what they have done please leave a comment. It would be awesome to hear about other peoples set-ups.
Touring videos will be coming soon, so stay tuned!
If you would like to support the channel it would be greatly appreciated and you can do so by checking out my Patreon Page here is the link. www.patreon.com/WanderingEye1...

    I love your videos ! I was considering a trailer until I watch your Evolution Of video. You have helped me tremendously, thank you ! I switched to the Paul Klampers mechanical disc brakes in the front. I bought one for rear also but need conversion help their. See my video on my 1120 upgrades. Any advice is very welcomed !

    Your video on the Jones bar caught my interest. I have had intermittent hand numbness with my straight bars. I progressed from there to your video on the expensive Priority 600 bicycle. Now I see you've "stuck" with a more conventional bike. Thanks for the videos . Now I wait for my new handlebars to arrive . (Non Jones)

    My 2023 1120 came with a 12sp SLX setup. I changed out the front chainring from a 30t to a 34t as the low gears are rarely used here in NW Florida.

    Good update Dean, the bike is looking pretty dialed in, can't wait to see it and maybe you'll allow me to take it for a spin!! Will send a message about the overnight ride, just back from South Carolina, what a shock getting back to Ontario this evening, rain, snow and wind. Not sure I like that! Cheers Bob...

    Hi Dean, great video presentation. I shall have to try doing something like this on my own bike. You are probably happy with those grips, but one that I can recommend is the Ergon GP1. They are not cheap but last a very long time, and are without doubt THE most comfortable grips that I have ever used on flat-bars. I have the GP3 with bar-ends included, but my son uses the GP1 on his Surly Molokai bars (like Jones). They are available in rubber or biocork and have such a comfortable design that I have done long tours (eg. 1100km of the Gibb River Road) without using cycle mitts at all as it was too hot, and had comfortable hands with no pressure or numbness issues. Just a thought.

    Thanks for watching Peter. I am very familiar with Ergon grips, we have sold them at every shop I have worked at and I have installed hundreds on bikes I've worked on. But they are not the right grip for me. But many people do like them. The ESI grips work better for my wrists in my opinion. Safe travels!

    Great upgrades. The only concern I have with getting the latest equipment when doing bike travelling is availability of supplies. Last June we needed a 9-speed master link while outside of Victoria. Could not find any even at local shops in Victoria. Luckily it was not needed as my travelling buddy had to return home earlier. I had supplies galore for my set-up. Have you ever been stuck with this issue in your travels ?

  • @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    Hi JP. They are 2.6 width. They key with this diameter is making sure you have the right tread pattern. The Mezcal's are a great all around tire because of their directional tread pattern, the directional tread is key for riding on the road comfortably. Hope your doing well my friend. :)

    What was the total cost for the 12 sp upgrade? Hardware only. A vid on the install process would have been good to see.

  • @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Reg. My total cost for the upgrade is undisclosed as I work at a bike shop and my cost was much lower than the average persons would be. And I didn't want to rub it in lol. But if one was to go out and purchase the complete groupset the cost would be @ $850 cad depending on a few details. Your point on install vid is valid and was planned but it's spring and the shop has been nuts so I had to get it all done at the end of the work day as quickly as possible and doing a proper video was not possible. Hope all is well. Cheers

    Hi Dean, Thanks for posting. A quick question about your panniers with the Backrack Deluxe MIK. I just changed out my rear rack with the Bontrager Backrack Deluxe MIK. When I hang the pannier on the drive side it makes contact with the derailleur cable, have you found this a problem? If so how did you correct it? Thanks!

  • @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    @WanderingEyeOutdoorAdventures

    Hi Dennis. Yes I noticed that might be a problem when I first built the bike. The only solution is to have the cable as short as functionally possible. What size frame are you riding and also what rear derailleur are you running? Cheers
