Tree trimming company charges woman $8,000 for two trees

To remove just two trees, a company charged one woman $8,000. CFA looks into the story to figure out if she was overcharged.

It feels less like she accepted the quote and had a problem with it and more like she accepted the quote then her family had a problem with it. Honestly, depending on the size of the trees, hazards, etc., 8k is NOT unreasonable for insured professionals that won't wreck your house or get someone injured/killed in the process of taking down the tree. Tree removal is not something to cheap out on. Pay professionals what they're worth. And stump grinding is generally quoted separately.

Police are not in the tree trimming business therefore they have no idea what it takes to remove a tree or the overhead costs involved. The insurance alone for this kind of work is very expensive. When you factor in the cost of workers comp, liability insurance, fuel, man hours, taxes, dumping fees, wear and tear on the machinery so on and so on. Honestly unless you are in the business you have no idea what it takes to do the job or run a business. Personally I see no problem with the price. Honestly if she had a problem with the price she should not have hired them instead of waiting until the work was done to complain about it. The only thing I see a problem with is the fact they drove her to the bank to get cash. Guaranteed they did not pay taxes on that money.

8k was probably right on the money, especially in a heavy residential area with traffic, pedestrians, serive drops, com lines, yard ornaments etc. Not to mention 1 000's of dollars in rigging equipment, because tree gear is insanely expensive. Add the cost of owning and operating large equipment that requires cdl's to probably drive, insurance, dot inspections, fuel, business insurance, do I need to go on? All of that is a huge overhead cost, and alot of people forget that they are also paying for the knowledge and know how of the crew to safely remove the trees. Yeah, 20 years ago, when my business was quite small, I calculated that given the amount of work days in a year that can be counted upon....aside from holidays, injury days, weather days....I would need to make $600 a day, just to cover my costs. That's ACTUAL overhead, not including payroll! That's overhead, including insurances and licensing, storage space costs, fuel, maintenance/repairs, consumables (saw chain, files, ropes, etc.)....not including my own living expenses or those of employees. In other words, lunch and drinks are not overhead, 😂. As payroll is officially supposedly "paying for itself", that's not overhead either. So that's needing to do $600 a day, just to start trying to pay my rent, and personal expenses...and I was a very small company. Imagine guys that I work with, who have 6 or 8 times the expenses I had.....

It's a free market--if she didn't like the quote price or hourly rate, she could hire someone else, attempt to do dangerously do it herself, or skip it. Considering that a new chipper is about $70,000, a bucket truck is $150,000 and insurance, including worker's comp is astronomically expensive (along with a real risk of death or paralysis ) most legit companies have to charge at least $100 per man hour. 8 grand would only be 80 man hours. A five man crew would reach that time within two days. The only fishy part is their insistence to be paid cash--they might have simply distrusted the womans check, but most likely they were trying to operate under the table illegally. People shouldn't complain when that is the price they agreed on.

A giant ass stump can take a few hours to properly grind and how deep the customer wants plays into cost. Further more most customers want the excess grounds hauled away and the grind are left level. A big ass 40-50 inch diameter stump will fill up a f550 dump truck with leftover grounds.

More than the trees got "trimmed". Get multiple estimates AND do a web search for complaints about tree services. Any business with more than a complaint or two? Choose someone else.

Tree work requires fearless talented hard working men. Climbing and rigging certain trees down is very hard in every way. So dangerous, you saw your rope you fall. You judge the physics wrong and a log on a rope crushes you or a crane topples over. As a climber I can say that I am not an educated man but I have met few who can do this work even after training. Many ppl I know have been crushed, killed, and air lifted from the site. Tree work is a team effort multiple men working through winter snow and summer sun. Season after season. Sweating so much your eyes are blurry until you go to bed. This is a coordinated job with lots of experience and skills required. Heavy machinery, your home on the line men's lives litterly on a line. Insurance power lines. Cranes cdl trucks. License for the city for the cranes for the bucket trucks. I wish that every man who looks down on this work was instantly telaported 90 ft up and had to negative rig a top out.

I’ve billed $8000+ for one tree. Tree work is expensive especially when climbing the tree is necessary. You are paying for the danger to bodies that is involved.

We have a tree service ourselves in great standing. On occasion customers pay in cash. We head to the bank and deposit it with the customers name and address attached to the cash deposit, then set aside the money out of it for the taxes on that money that need to be paid when filing too. Nothing wrong with this. Now if payment is demanded in a more aggressive manner then that is not right, and someone needs to have a more smooth collecting system in place, then so be it. But tree work is hard hard work. In todays day and age, prices are going up. I see nothing wrong with this common practice. If you have any concerns I would check on insurance and make sure you get a copy directly from the insurance company proving they carry it. Look closely at it. I have ran into an instance one time when someone shared his insurance with me and had guys show up on the jobsite a sub and he did not actually have workmens comp insurance. My question is when the guy falls off the roof and breaks his back if it were to happen, who will be taking care of who here. These questions are real and highly important. I also would make sure a firm contract is in place and signed before starting the work.

Large dying ash trees, near a home, with hazards below??? Yea it could have been more depending on access and equipment needed. Not to mention the man power and fuel. I do tree work and have been in the industry for 10 years. 8,000 is a normal check for big jobs like that.

  • @jasonsimmons6684

I wouldn't take a check from somebody these days. Maybe a certified cashier check from a bank, but cash would be preferable. I just spent the weekend taking down a huge walnut in my back yard. 60÷ ft tall and about 40" base. Huge to me at least. Had a buddy that had access to a 100ft bucket truck and we both have good quality saws that were capable. Spent 150$ in just fuel for the truck! I'd bet it would of been 3-4k minimum to have someone do it. No damage, other than a bar and chain! I wouldn't recommend it to just anybody. If ya don't like a price, call someone else.

$8000 for 2 trees doesn’t seem crazy. I have a single elm in my backyard and have gotten estimates from $8000-$15000. If the tree is in a weird spot or there are power lines near by it can be a difficult job.

I think she expected to get them cut down for a few hundred a piece. Like Yu making more at your desk job than the owner of the landscaping company at those prices

1 big tree over lots of stuff, maybe bad terrain can go 10grand, maybe more depending on area. 8grand for 2 isn't all that much and the news doesn't know any tree facts of condition/problems and risk. They are slandering without knowing anything really. Lady might have not intended to pay hence the me too poverty story. A tree svc can have well over a million in equipment with 200grand in ins costs per yr easily

    Tree service is expensive people

  • @Aaronbtc4
    @Aaronbtc411 ай бұрын

Yea people ...tree stumps are usually NOT. Included when giving an estimate to cut down trees. Stumps are a BATTLE in there own right . In other words tree stumps are a BIT ( H to remove . All you have to do is ask . Does this price include the stumps . Or is that an additional fee. Just ask for a price with stump removal. And without.. stump removal is t just removing a stump .. it also usually involves removal all the big roots in the immediate area. New soil brought in and new sod put down where the tree was . So there is some nuance to all of this .. best thing is just ask as many questions as you can think of . And if any tree service has a problem with you asking questions. That is your first red flag . Anymore than 1 red flag . Do not hire that tree service . The average person does not own a tree service nor work for one. So there are many questions that may need to be addressed before you move forward with whatever tree service you may be getting. Word of mouth is your best bet.. if know someone that had a good experience with a tree service and they come recommended that is usually your best bet . Don't judge a book by the cover some people think tree service that has a 10 man crew . And all kinds of fancy equipment is the best choice. That is not always true. Sometimes your best choice is 2 guys in a truck . Always make sure they have proper insurance. So if they get hurt it's not on you .
