Trebevic - '84 Sarajevo Winter Olympics bobsleigh track bike run

Спорт

I had a few runs with my bike on the Olympic bobsleigh track on mount Trebevič, Sarajevo.
While the bobsleigh racers did 120km/h during the '84 Winter Olympics my Garmin showed 59.3km/h as the top speed over four runs. I know better bikers can do (and did) much higher speeds but it was enough for me because I really enjoyed it. :)
The track usable portion is 1.5km and definitely worth a trip if you are in Sarajevo even if just walking. It is the closest Olympic mountain to the city.

    At first it looked really fun, with the gradual curves. Then on those curves where you had to go more parallel to the ground? Imagining myself in your place was terrifying. I bet you had a blast though. Glad you didn't get hurt.

    +Abraham Holleran It was my third or fourth run when I made the video so I had some practice. :) It's not that terrifying as it seems but you have to be careful. I rode with the speed that I felt relaxed and comfortable with as I didn't want to risk a crash it just doesn't worth it. The track is not too steep so you can brake and go down as slow as you want it's still fun regardless of the speed. :)

  • @Flakeskidny85

    @Flakeskidny85

    It was spared (thankfully) in the war for the most part. Well-produced concrete can handle weather extremely well with little wear and tear. Notice that the concrete pylons that support the track and the concrete overhands are also still in very good shape. The design of the track is such that it drains naturally quite well too. A pressure washing and re-sealing and the track would be almost ready for competition again (though the safety barriers and timing clocks as well as the start house would need work). Give some credit to the track designers and builders. They definitely knew what they were doing!

    You'd be surprised but the concrete track itself is intact--outside a few holes drilled into the finish turn. That said, it will require new start houses, a new refrigerant system/ice shed and operations building, a new control tower, new track switching equipment (it can be split into three separate segments), and a whole bunch more work for it to return to winter competition ready status. Right now, it's actually being used by Bosnia and a slew of other eastern European countries for summer training!

    SuperWasweissichdenn There are many places to ride around Sarajevo and in Bosnia in general. The olympic ski jump is impossible because it’s in very bad shape and the end of the jump is closed down with a metal structure. It’s not in use since the olympics and got damaged during the war. The mountains are beautiful if you check out my Facebook page “Biking in Bosnia and Herzegovina” you can see more places and you can contact me there if you want to come I can help you out.
