Steven He is a comedian, actor, and media pioneer who you may have seen online in the last year as the "emotional damage" guy. This line from one of Steven's videos hit a meteoric viral rise in the summer of 2022, but unlike many viral stars who are a flash in the pan, Steven was ready. His years of hustling as a working actor and content creator allowed him to run with his success and build a rapidly growing audience of people who enjoy his "Off Brand" TikToks or KZread shorts about his most popular character known only as "Asian Dad". Steven has big plans for the future with the impending release of his original series "Ginormo" and a seemingly never-ending waterfall of fresh content across social media. We talked about his health, specifically the recent surgery he had on a cyst above his eye he believes was caused by stress. We also shared stories of our immigration backgrounds. Steven was born in China, raised in Ireland, and then went to college in the UK and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC, so we actually have a lot on common. I'm so grateful we got to spend a full day together and hope you enjoy our conversation!

I absolutely adore how anytime Steven would say that something he does is "stupid" or "dumb", Doctor Mike would tell him that no, it's not stupid, you're just responding like this because of this. I think these are things we all need to hear at some point and honestly, even hearing it in this video made me think about how I perceive my own habits and mechanisms

This was a real eye opener on how much Steven has done and how quickly he did it. He sets himself high standards to meet. It was amazing seeing him go on a journey about opportunities to be kinder to himself. Dr Mike's reflective listening with medical suggestions amd Steven's ability to be very honest and emotio ally and physically real makes for a really useful conversation. I think it will help a lot of people be kinder to themselves. But also not be afraid to keep on trying

Regarding Steven’s story about how childhood events (like walking home alone) can stick with you: My parents would often forget to pick us up and we lived in a rural area, 12 miles from anything. This was before cellphones, so we had to stay put until they remembered and scrambled to get us. When I became a parent, I made absolutely sure I was at the front of the pick up line. My kids didn’t have that scar and after a while, asked me to hold back (not too much, of course) so they could have a little chill time with their friends after school let out. It was impactful! It helped me to separate my anxieties from theirs and see them - and myself, much more clearly.
@Firikka
Жыл бұрын
You were basically somewhat limiting your kids social life due to you overcorrecting your past trauma. It's quite common that children who had overtly strict parents will become overtly hands-off with their kids disciplining. As in the kid is likely spoiled then by not having any limits. Balance is the correct solution
"Walk around the school with nothing to do because you're waiting for breaks to end" I relate to that so much. That's my life, lol. Relate so much to introversion and staying in my room doing my own thing. I grew up a loner. Still am to this day.

It's really fun to hear Steven have a serious conversation since I've only seen him doing comedic videos. Dr. Mike is actually a great interviewer too. As for the non-Chinese people getting offended, I think what happens is that they're not able to connect to the comraderie aspect of a stereotypical Chinese relative character. Part of the humour is the relatability of it (where you recognize the character as someone you know well) and also that there is a layer of fondness so when a white person sees the character, they only get the mocking layers and not the others and make assumptions about some intended malice.
@EGA-Delta

I am a Chinese and I find it hilarious. My classmates will say things and then apologize for being racist but I thought that the comment was hilarious. And then I will make stereotypical jokes and they'll sit there in shock lmao.
I wanna point out how emotionally strong Steven is. The first part of the video is how he struggled as an actor but the energy he gives out is pure happiness. You my guy are my idol now.thats some superhero thing going on

Steven is a comical genius. I stumbled across him on KZread 6-8 mths ago and after the first video I knew he had raw talent. He s hilarious &deserves to become a great star...I pray success & showbiz doesn't ruin the great guy😢. Much respect.
'Make an effort not to abuse my body' ...I needed to hear this..single mom to a kiddo with nine disabilities, also trying to work to make our lives better ect etc...i get 4-5 hours of sleep and my body is shot I needed this. Thank you both 💜
Love his honesty and willingness to be vulnerable.
I love how it is a interview that turns into trauma diving. I will honestly say I never thought about disassociating, or what it was like or looked like...so yeah guess I really need to see a therapist now, have a bit more unpacking that I thought I did.
Can imagine a night out with Steven. He loves being upside down haha. I’m from Ireland and it’s obvious our craziness has rubbed off in him..Really enjoyed this ❤❤
I really relate to the closing up and endure as a coping mechanism Steven talked about. I am ethnically chinese and have abusive parents. What I told myself as a child is "you will get through this, just get through this, only a few more years". Friends said they don't know much about me, complain I don't open up, and I don't let anyone in because in my mind I only have me and I must protect myself.

God, i love how thoughtful this guy is - actually both Steven and Dr. Mike. I liked his jokes but he really makes great reflected arguments and also knows when to back out because he doesn't know enough to build an opinion - that is so refreshing. Kudos.
I just want to say Steven... conversation about stereotypes and bullies....very well articulated 👏👏👏
“I think the current version of me is my favorite” man…. That hit me hard.
Steven's points on comedy are absolutely spot on. Love both these creators. Definitely want expecting this crossover.
Both Steven and Mike said they are grateful their dad/mom was strict with them, but also mentioned the experience was be traumatizing in retrospect. I grew up in a similar environment and I am also grateful. However there were indeed memories/moments in my childhood I wish were different. Now that I have a child of my own, I wonder how I should be balancing being strict and not making it traumatic experience for my child.
The collab I never thought would existed, 2 legends, coming together, 2 of my favorite KZreadrs, finally happened
Steven, thank you so much for sharing your journey. It is so comforting to hear someone else feeling things similar to myself. Mike, you handled this so gracefully and so patiently. Very commendable. Also your hair looks great in this one lol
Oh man, that last bit where he was talking about realizing that you're reacting because someone is pushing your buttons, but they're you're buttons and the sore spots originated somewhere in the past... That some good shit 👌🏻 I realized that two or three years ago now too and it has made such a huge difference to my mental health.

I love how Steven was so honest talking about some of the mental health issues he experienced. Also how Dr.mike responded to the conversation and giving out great insight and information ❤️ Being a person with anxiety and depression I love that people aren’t afraid to share their experiences with others. I feel mental health is still a taboo topic for a lot of people… I also relate to Steven being somewhere he feels uncomfortable and wants to leave. Theirs a personal joke between some of my family members and close friends who also have anxiety. Wow, I believe this is my first time seeing a Checkup video (at least in its entirety). I think I'm going to go back and watch previous ones! I was very interested in some of the topics discussed in this episode, especially when you got into your *suspicions* about what the neck/arm issue is, because it does sound similar to the lumbar radiculopathy I had which affected one leg as well. I appreciate that you took the time to make sure he didn't stay afraid of what you were trying to explain. You are awesome in that aspect because as a healthcare professional myself, I find listening to explanations less frightening since I have a better understanding of the body, but for you to be able to break it down for laymen is a trait I (and many patients) very much appreciate from a physician!
I love this convo so much. One of my faves. It got me thinking about a lot of things about myself. If it's something small, I freak out and complain, but if it's big, I'm really quiet about it. I go into this "I can take care of myself" thought process. I got to thinking more about my last heat episode. When I started feeling sick, I didn't say anything because I didn't wanna interrupt. I also wasn't very focused. I just grabbed my Powerade and fought through it until I couldn't anymore. I wanted to jump into to the convo, but I didn't wanna interrupt and I get shy. lol
As a Psychology major aspirant and as an individual hoping to be more insightful, I really enjoyed and appreciated this. Thank you Steven and Dr Mike!❤️

😂"U went really dark with that" - u literally just diagnosed one of my main issues! I have been disassociating since childhood and I get super frustrated when I can't whoop for joy when I get something difficult right or just genuinely scream on a roller coaster (if I did it would feel forced like I'm pretending). I have been wanting to go get counselling for years because I can recognise that I have issues but can't afford it so instead I tend to be introspective and just try to gain understanding into why my behaviour "malfunctions" in non stressful situations etc. Thanks so much for this video I actually found it helpful on many different levels from the beginning (what? Content creators hire editors 😳). I genuinely appreciated this video. Thanks to both of you for sharing your stories and knowledge. 💖

I was so happy to see this interview! :D Sounds like Steven is just a few years behind me on the "Wait, no one told me by body would start betraying me in my 20s! I thought I had until at least 30!" journey. Relatable, even if his specifics are quite different than mine. I turn 30 this year. First major stress-related, nerve-related pain was the year I turned 26, actually. Ever since then, I've slowly come to terms with the fact that I can't just sit or lay however I want for hours on end. I have to pay attention to my position. Change it. Do my physical therapy exercises-and other exercises to (a) avoid stiffening into a rock of pain, and (b) strengthen the muscles around vulnerable areas. And, most recently: be purposeful about pillow/sleeping position. Bah. Actually, as I write this, I'm feeling a bit of stiffness/discomfort in my neck that means I should probably stretch, do an exercise, etc. before it becomes a Problem. I don't wanna. -_-

See, and I feel like this just showcases how *different* each person is when it comes to their body. I'm 32. I consume 300 mg of caffeine throughout the day, I work overnights for a big convenience store chain, and when I'm not at work or sleeping during the day I spend quite a bit of time sitting in front of my computer. Every now and then I might take a walk around the block if I feel like just getting out of the house for a bit. But I haven't yet started feeling any of the way that others in their 30s say they do. I haven't had any stress or nerve related pain yet, I haven't hard to start doing exercises to keep me from hurting in areas, and my metabolism is still so high I practically burn calories while I'm sitting and doing nothing-- seriously, I have to be constantly eating or snaking on something throughout the day or it feels like my stomach is cannibalizing itself. Its so wild to me that bodies can be so different from each other when it comes to stuff like this. Still though, hope you continue to take care of yourself.

Incredible insights from Steven! And Doctor Mike is a great interviewer for it!
"I'm not sure I fully understand" - Steven He. What a great, nuanced thing to say about difficult topics! Saving it for later.
I can relate to Steven so hard with the 'numb' reaction. I looked like I don't care to people, but my heartbeat and my stomach churning like crazy. I am incapable of crying it out 90% of the time. When I have extreme regret or sadness, I kind of dissociate(?). Like I somehow can't connect myself to my emotion fully.
Wow, this has to be my favourite checkup thus far. Hats off to you both, so engaging, so insightful and uplifting 😊 love it. Keep it coming 🤟
I love them both, and Dr Mike is a really good interviewer!
Doctor mike is so good at asking questions wow I want to eventually be as a good listener as him
Great conversation - all the talk about the difficulty of getting into acting reminds me of athletes trying to make the higher level in sports! They work hours upon hours, training and pushing themselves, sometimes making a team, only to be cut from others. They (or their parents) can spend hundreds and thousands of dollars for it to go nowhere. You can be talented, but if they’re looking for someone who’s bigger, or hits harder, you could still be rejected. So many places where this applies, and you just want one chance to prove yourself!!
