Rib injuries in BJJ are extremely common and oftentimes they can accompany a popping sensation. This injury often occurs after compression to the rib cartilage and/or when there is extreme pressure on the rib associated with changing the angles.
It is important to not only work the costal cartilage, but it's also important to work the backside of the rib cage as well as the muscles in between the Cartilage. Dysfunction of the rib injury can affect the hip, abdominal movements, and breathing patterns which can all lead to further dysfunction.
We also prescribed a lot of breathwork and stabilization exercises to slowly rehab the ribs and cartilage without causing further injury (not shown in this video).
We find that having hands-on treatment dramatically increases the healing time!
In this video, we have Atos Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Andy Murasaki.

Man thank you for making your videos Dr. Josh, I just wish you lived in my area! I haven't been able to find a sports therapist that specializes or has knowledge of Jiu Jitsu injuries.

Hey Josh, do you have any solution for sternum injury. I was wrestling with a partner who was heavier, he got the take down and I landed on my right side and I felt my entire left side of my chest pop. X-ray came up negative. Been out for about 1 month and really itching to get back on the mats .

If negative, I would treat it as a bone bruise (contusion) and/or an rib cartilage injury. Please check out our rib pain videos and playlist as we have extensive rehab on it.

Yeah buddy I have a bruised cartilage from pulling guard and their head landed square on my ribs. Note: pull head towards under your arm, not onto your chest.

Hey dr Josh when you palpate at around 2:48 his top abdomen and ask him if it goes around to the back if it does what does that mean? Currently going through a similar rib injury.

Also curious about this as I have pain around my lower abdomen, chest and pain around the back of my ribs, like a popping sound sometimes. Extremely painful.

I am sure you can, I have seen professional athletes with scoliosis. That said, its up to you, your pain levels, what you like to do, and your comfort level with this. A hard yes or no answer is not the best here. Thanks for asking!

Someone got a body triangle on me but it was off to the side. My bottom rib feel out of place and just real sore. Any links to how to possibly pop it back in place?

That first depends if it truly is out of place vs. Another type of injury. We have some links on how to mobilize the ribs, make sure you check out our jujitsu injury and rib pain videos/playlist.
