Treasures of the UCLA Library: Cuneiform Tablets (Part 3 of 5)

Near Eastern Languages and Cultures graduate student Sara Brumfield recounts her experience working at the UCLA Library's Center for Primary Research and Training, where she described and translated two collections of cuneiform tablets: the Edward A. I am using this for a professional development that I am designing in Boston for teachers of the Boston Public Schools. The course is titled: "Tech: Past, Present, and Future" A History of Technology. We are starting with writing and this is exactly what I need to talk about the birth of calculation in the form of inventories and receipts. Thank you for this.

I wonder how the translations would differ across continents, affected by each region's historical biases...That would be a dissertation.

Oregon doesn't have a lot by way of cuneiform studies, however you may try the University of Washington in Seattle. They have a well-respected Near Eastern studies department.

I should probably also say that I have some reason to trust Dr. Heiser because I have a master's degree in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in Syro-Palestinian archaeology and Near Eastern languages. So while I'm not a full blown professional yet (I'm on course to get a PhD in this field), as soon as you get training in how to engage with the actual primary sources that historians use to understand the past, claims like those made by Sitchin evaporate pretty quickly.

Does she beat her students with a whip when they make a mistake writing their clay tablets? You know, like a sumerian teacher in the "Tablets' House". Ha ha ha, just joking! Does anybody remember Samuel Noah Kramer's "History begins at Sumer"? Seriously, how can I become an assyriologist? Is in UCLA any grant for foreign students? I'm from Mexico City, and I really want to study a Master or a Ph.D. in Ancient Near East studies. Greetings! I will do my best efforts to be wise as Dr. Brumfield.

You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel. Scriptures say that women are not allowed to teach nor usurp authority over men.
