Treasure Hunting in a Scottish Loch - Our First Ink Bottle!
After a recommendation by one of our wonderful subscribers we head to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park to dive a new area boasting some solid Victorian history. With snow on the hills it was a chilly dive but well worth it as we find a bounty of lovely bottles including our first ever ink bottles! Let us know which find is your favourite!
I also managed to clean up quite a few bits of modern rubbish and broken bits along the way.

After watching your uploads, I'll be taking a mask and snorkel to Scotland next time. Even during low sea tides and along loch shores, I have found some neat things. Love the old country within my heritage!
Great video again. Hemp is the star of the show. I love the glass bottle too

Great inkwells that you found. The pen rest one is such a beautiful colour. Thank you for a great video 👍🇦🇺 xxx

It is a beauty!
Beautiful finds! Wonderful to see that familiar place. My mother started spending time there in the 1930's, I started spending time there in the 1960's. The site of my near drowning at the age of 3. The site of my first kiss. Some waterskiing in the 1970's or so. I am surprised you found so much glass and not ceramic bottles. Looks like you are just finding the tip of the iceberg at this location. I am sure you will find a lot more on future dives. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Colin, it sounds like there is part of your very essence tied to the area! I’m delighted to have shown you part of it under the water. I think your absolutely right just a scratch on the surface and can’t wait to go back and hunt for those ceramic ginger beers!

@@bottlesfromthedeep Yes, our whole family is very sentimental about that area. In a footnote in history, it all started with my grandmother's search for contraband eggs during WWII. She took the train from Glasgow into the village and then started knocking on farmhouse doors looking for eggs, because of the rationing. She had 4 children to feed. Then she found a farmhouse to let, and starting staying there for extended stays. Even though we never owned property there, it was the family's second home in may ways. My mother and my aunt continued to visit every year until my mother's passing in the 1990's. Sorry for the tangent. Just a stroll down memory lane.

Absolutely stunning scenery… My favourites from this video are the Crieff bottles and the ink bottles. In my mind, I picture an author with writers block, throwing in the towel and his ink bottles into the loch! 🤣 Your doggo looks so cute watching you there… ♥️

Hiya - excellent stuff - have you ever tried the River Leven between Loch Lomond and Dumbarton? there were glassworks and lots of other industries on the river over the last few hundred years - I have a wee video on it but it's not my normal videos around Loch Lomond and used to go digging for bottles when younger, still know a few sites - the Leven is best done in the summer at low water...lots of junk too though. 🍾Great Stuff...Dave 👍👍

obtain a thin piece of metal rod and bend the end over at 90 degrees then tear up a green kitchen pad into thin strips , push them into the neck and u got a handy tool for the hard to reach places inside bottles, thats what i use anyway. personally i would say the penny ink was the best find then the crief aerated

Great stuff this,the Sturmey Archer hub will most likely have a month and year date mark plus the text style gives it a date. One has to ponder/ wonder how did all this stuff end up in there? Especially when it's in good order and clusters of items? The ink wells together that gate is worth retrieving if your alowed it's probably from some nearby farm you could measure gate post distances, or just match the style.how many resets have we been through out with the Old in with the New. 1851 is a date I settled at only to find more studied folks than me had arrived at that very date, so if your items congregate predominantly either side of that. Then maybe your search is another piece to this puzzle. Best to all.
@bottlesfromthedeep
Жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea to measure some local gates. It’s hard to believe folks would throw such a lovely gate away. I like the idea of fetching it and cleaning it up. It is funny how we always reset as you say and then a few resets later yearn for the stuff of a few resets back. I’ll pop back to the spot soon and see what else is there!

I was having a look on some maps, You have some really old coastal ports dating back hundreds of years... Could be worth a dive pending water clarity and legalities of diving the ports.. I have a port Id love to dive.. But cant due to Federal Laws..

Hello my friends ! Thanks for another great video . I was hoping you would find a bottle with a vulcanized screw top intact . I have several in my collection , all with the tops in mint condition . Your favorite find , the ribbed ink well , is designed to hold your quill . In collecting circles we call it a boat . And of course I have one and is one of my favorites . Look forward to the next dive ,,, Thanks

Thanks Mike! I’m glad you enjoyed the Vulcanite find. It’s was so cool to see one that’s been in place since the bottle was closed! I wondered if those little features were for resting the quill 🪶

@@bottlesfromthedeep I am curious ,,,,, does the vulcanite stopper have the company name on it ? Yours is one of the early styles . Btw ,,,,, there are many different styles and sizes of ink wells . I have about twenty different types . A few are very rare . Be careful out there ,, I dove for many years and the simplest dives can be tragic . I came close to death in two different dives a couple years apart . Take care ,,,,,,,, Thanks
Strange thought, some might think its silly, but do you think its possible that some of the stuff you are leaving behind now, either due to lack of personal interest or peer interest, could eventually turn into something that would be highly sought after in the future? I know it means nothing in the here and now, but in a few generations time, have you thought about the potential value some of these objects might have? Maybe I am dense and that is the whole name of your game, finding things that will have more future value, but I see real time value in the stuff you get so I doubt its that
@bottlesfromthedeep
Жыл бұрын
Hi Tommy, not a strange thought at all. It’s something I think about all the time when hunting. We are very much looking for stuff that around 100 years old and older but as you say in 50 years some of the stuff is going to look very appealing. I suppose it’s nice to leave stuff for the treasure hunters of the future but good to clear away dangerous or polluting rubbish!

I've gotta ask, is there a reason you freedive instead of scuba?
@bottlesfromthedeep
Жыл бұрын
Well I guess speed and expense really! Also don’t know how to Scuba yet! Sometimes we cover quite a lot of distance on the surface and have to walk in for a long time to get to the locations so scuba gear would be a bit heavier I guess!
@gamernick1533
Жыл бұрын
@@bottlesfromthedeep the carrying gear would definitely be an issue if you're going long distance. Would highly recommend for the more civilised areas though! :) Could have a real chill dive somewhere like that!
Do you ever get creeped out diving out there by yourself?
@bottlesfromthedeep
Жыл бұрын
Definitely if there is bad visibility and/or massive Pike 😬
Why are there so many bottles in the lakes?
@bottlesfromthedeep
Жыл бұрын
Simple reason was there was no municipal waste collection at that time so you essentially had to dig a hole in the garden or chuck it somewhere so lots ended up in the loch!
