Red loctite absolutely necessary on the Xmaxx. And u need to let it sit min 24 hrs.

Kicking the pinion was so common the XRT added a pinion support to hold it in place so the gear didn’t get ruined

Also Tekno pinion + GDM or Saga spur. Do yourself a favor and stay away from traxxas gears.

i bought myself an arrmor pinion with the flat inside , then i filled down a bit more of the xmaxx motor shaft so it would fit and it stays on really well

I only use the Arrma Safe-D pinions in all my cars.

When I use thread lock, I let mine cure for 24 hours. Never had any issues on any of my rc's

I'm not a big fan of Traxxas but the Xmaxx is one of the toughest basher imo, with a few upgrades I should add lol 😂

The only pinion I ever lost was off the XRT I got from Earl Moorhead lol. It was after I changed the gears I think I forgot the Loctite but it has been fine now. 😁Maybe you two have jinxed vehicles lol 🤔

It's weird I have a friend who has pinion and spur problems with everything from stock Traxxas gears to aftermarket gears, I have never had any problems with my Xmaxx using only Traxxas spur and pinion, they are over a year old now and factory originals, so im not sure what the problem is for some people, you are definitely not the only one to have spur & pinion issues...good luck 👍👍

I would say most problems people have are from landing with it on power and slamming the brakes from full speed its tough on those parts

Can you drill a slight indentation on the motor shaft to help locate the set screw and prevent pinion gear coming off. I just got back into the hobby last year after a 20year hiatus but I used to do that on my big Losi Super Truck that I still have. Good luck Guy!!!😅

The Losi Super Truck…LST!! I still have my all original LST and LST 2. Had them in storage for 7-8 years and got them out 2-3 months ago. Put new glow plugs in and they both fired up in less than 3 seconds. Just fantastic engineering by Losi and Dynamite back in the day.

That’s excellent! I plan to run the LST and Savage25 this spring. I put them away 20 years ago in running condition and had put engine storage oil in them and they still turn over by hand nicely. I bet they will both fire right up, can’t wait to hear those awesome sounds. Good luck with yours, glad they are working good for you. They were always dependable machines 👍

Arrma 8s pinions have a flat in them buddy but on the xmaxx they constantly eject pinions if you dont put strong loctite on the set screws and crank them stupidly tight with an and proper hex key the screwdrivers won’t get it tight enough

@@rcguygarage I think there is an element of flex mainly from the plastic and the length of the spur gear shaft that is unsupported. But I haven’t had a problem with mine for a while I did file the flat on the motor shaft slightly to take any damage away that was there from a couple of times the pinion has slipped. I believe the solution is to use the arrma 8s pinions from the outcast / Kraton the d shape in the pinion take some of load away from the set screw I would try this and also mate it with a good steel spur gear.

I found the double grub screw pinions work the best. KT recommended the stud lock loctite, im gonna try that next time

I wonder if you can put like little hole or indention it the shaft, where the grub screws would be. I'm far from knowing if that would help and I've not seen any one doing it on rc motor shafts but i use to repair fertilizer auger trailers and beds, on the bottom of the auger tube it had a bearing with set screws and we had to take the allen Head grubs out and had square headed M sized bolts with jam nuts on them. I can't remember but seems like we marked the shaft, hit it with a punch or corner of a chisel and cranked down the bolt on the indents and then locked it down with the little jam nuts. Just had to be careful and not break off the little square headed bolt 🔩. Its been years Guy since I was doing that job but its never hurt to try and bounce ideas around.

I have the Safe-D pinion gear from Arrma. You don’t even need loctite because the c clip holds it in place. I do however use it just in case….lol To date have never had a problem again.

Yes that's sounds KEY in this situation. Still want to align the gears though👍💯

Loctite 680 ON THE SHAFT and both grub screws. You'll need a little heat to remove the pinion. It'll never come off on its own though. And I too was thinking you might have alignment issues.

@rcguygarage TY for responding. I like both companies as well. Many content creators that focus on brands are often pumping up Traxxas it seems. Some (paraphrasing while doing 30+ foot jumps X-Maxx) say "Arrma truck would break upon landing "etc. I have the traxxas dual cgharger for my 2 4S batteries and it proves to be much easier to use than two other chargers i have for all other rc batteries so Kudos to traxxas on that. I know that Im tired of Hosim and other RC manufacturers that use Phillips head screws instead of exclusivley HEX type as they can handle more force and not wear down as easy imo. Anyway thank you kindly, and please keep up your quality content and have a happy new year.

The only thing i like about my Xmaxx is the run time, they are far superior in comparison with my other large-scale bashers. Other than the runtime, the Xmaxx was the worst investment i ever made in nearly anything i have owned, including that Chevy Corsica LST i bought when i was twenty years old that leaked oil all over than damn place.

What did you do to do this conversion did you just take an x-maxx and install a xrt chassis

Hey guy I wonder if a wheel lock for and airplane wheel would work they are super cheap and would just lock on the shaft to take some of the pressure off the gear set screw

What were you doing with the pinion? What are you soaking it in? Red loctite? Arrma safe-D clip pinion?

i m big fan of XRT 👍

Same thing is happening to my xmaxx. Found one of the bearings in the motor is bad. Hoping that's all it is.

@@rcguygarage Yes, pinion side. Every 1-2 batt packs gear comes loose. Stock and hardened gears. Haven't had that problem with the xrt yet.

i know this is probably a silly question, but do you run any type of thread locker in those grub screws on the pinion? even something like blue loctite that is relatively impervious to heat (assuming you dont have a problem with it getting too hot under the gear cover) and as an ex-automobile detailer, i saw that dig at earl lolol - hey earl, your BMW's paint is screamin' at ya!

Yes I normally use blue after checking and cleaning. This RC has alignment issues. Earl who's EARL😂🤣😂🤣

It does work but my attitude is adding the extra weight versus just sucking it up and buying another body. No matter what either way you going to pay. On the larger scale vehicles it's semi less of an issue.

@@cornek6095 you just need to evaluate your time, effort and materials involved. It is worth it in the end. The body still can get mangled dependent on abuse. I'll never do it as I'll just buy new if and when needed. Just my personal opinion👍💯
