Traxxas Stampede Cogging Trouble - and Fix

My son's Stampede has been giving us a LOT of trouble. It started to cog really bad about 1-2 months ago.
I knew the motor was really worn, so threw a new motor at it.
...that didn't seem to help.
I adjusted the suspension.
....that didn't seem to help.
I put new bearings all around.
...that didn't seem to help.
I put in a new ESC.
....that didn't seem to help.
I adjusted the gear mesh.
...that didn't seem to help.
Finally, I decided to put another motor in it again. It finally fixed it!!
The look and reaction from James was all worth it!

    My son got this when he was 3.5-4. It was a brushed 4x4 to start. Honestly - it was just about right as far as speed goes. The other thing that seemed like his favorite at first was a crawler (Losi Night Crawler or Redcat Everest 10). Since his coordination was bad, it helped that he could drive OVER everything! 😁😁

    Very nice, sometimes I also get those moments where for whatever reason somethings just don't mate up. While I've never messed with the timing, but in some of the newer stuff I've had to replace, I've found that it is a setting that can be adjusted, do you think your issue had something to do with that?

  • @RoadsideRC

    @RoadsideRC

    Good question! I did try to change the punch settings on the ESC - no help. I also tried swapping wires between the ESC and motor - still no help. Perhaps you are right. If the ESC was fully programmable, perhaps a timing shift would have solved it!

  • @RoadsideRC

    @RoadsideRC

    Күн бұрын

    Since it is the VXL model, it shouldn't seem slow. A few things to check: 1) what battery are you using, and are you sure it is charged fully? 2) the ESC in that truck has a "training mode". Ensure you are not accidentally in that mode.

    Hey cool video, you seem to know you stuff with Esc's and electronis. I was wondering if you could help me with my Esc issue. When I turn my rc on and give it throttle the engines just violently goes into forward and reverse back and forth rapidly. I tried it with a working engine out of another rc to make sure it wasn't the motor that was bad, and it was the same thing. give it throttle and the engine just goes forward and reverse back and forth super fast and violently and the wires on the esc heat up very quickly. Is this a dead esc? Thanks!

  • @RoadsideRC

    @RoadsideRC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately, my guess is the ESC is dead. Unless it is a sensored ESC, and you are not running a sensored motor? What ESC is it?

  • @xKevmachinex

    @xKevmachinex

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@RoadsideRC I see, well the sticker fell off of the esc so im not sure what it is anymore, I bought it from a hobby shop in edmonton ab it was around $150 canadian and professional grade according to the guy the shop. it also ran fine for over 2 years and only in the last month or two it started acting up and now this issue. The issue now that I think about it started, or at least got much worst much faster, when I upgraded my motor to a higher KV, my old one was like 1700 kv and my knew one is over 3000, not sure exactly maybe 3250kv. I noticed that my battery connector and esc connector fused together and the wires were super hot, burn your skin if you touched them. I looked and the connector melted on the battery thou the esc connector looked fine. I am wondering if maybe something burnt out, or if i completely fried the esc. I tried a differnt motor that was working and it still won't go so I am assuming now its the esc. I may have to tear the shell off the esc and have a look at the internals. thanks for the help thou :)

  • @RoadsideRC

    @RoadsideRC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Wow! Yes - that would have done it! Most ESCs have a range of motor they can work with. Going from a 1700kv to a 3000+kv is 100% what fried the ESC.

    Ok, I’ve had this on my Rustler for about a year. The esc it came wit never worked, got another one & my 1st drive ripped the stock tires off. Coming from XL5 to this is night & day for $35... wouldn’t put over 2S. From all I’ve found out, don’t get the fan wet, (MAIN PROBLEM) it’s made by hobbywing, so Definitely get the Program Card. Cogging,, with stock tires on my Rustler no cogging at all,, Programmed to highest start point. Do get cogging with the Badlands tires (just on back) & (COMPLETELY Ballon) which are much bigger & more weight, but still only cogs in a pinch. Are your motor temps high ?? Mine gets high with the big tires.

    Our motors certainly get warm, but nothing too crazy honestly. Plus, with some of these cheaper brushless setups, we just run them until they die and swap in a new one.
